Bulls-eye

I was going through some old poems in a folder that I found and one of the poems sparked a memory.

When I was in my late teens and my buddies and I frequented the local bars, we were, of course, like all the other guys that were there.

We had two things on our minds;

Drinking 

Girls

(Put them in any order you want. Usually we had to do some drinking before we approached any girls.)

I know you what you are thinking. Another thought about horny teenage boys and life.

Well, yes and no.

Being the less attractive of the group, I had to work much harder than the other guys. I basically approached every semi attractive woman in the club, regardless of age.

(I know. I was pathetic)

Many times I would come back to our table to the snickering of my buddies.

“Another strike out for Billy boy,” was a common phrase I heard.

But as time went by, it became evident that my perseverance paid off far more times than any of the others.

Now every time I ‘Struck out’, I was razzed even more.

So I developed a group of sport related comebacks to basically rub it in their faces.

Baseball:

“I might strike out more than you guys, but I hit way more home runs.”

Baseball:

“I might have the lowest batting average, but I get on base more than you guys.”

Golf:

“I might slice a lot of balls into the rough, but i get the most holes-in-one.”

Hockey:

“I take more shots on goal than you do, but I also score more goals.”

Basketball:

“I might miss a lot of shots, but I get way more slam dunks.”

Football:

“You guys don't run with the ball as much as I do, but look who scores the most touchdowns.”

Soccer:

“You guys run faster than I do, but who finishes off the plays?”

And on and on and on it went.

Silly, I know, but looking back on that time in my life, I realized that it wasn’t my skills that made me a success…

It was the fact that I never stopped trying.

No matter how difficult the situation looked.

I simply NEVER gave up.

I guess that is the point that I am trying to make.

If you throw enough darts,

You will eventually get a bulls-eye.
