Chapter 2: Unlikely Angel
Dolly's POV:
I'm sitting outside, in my chaise lounge chair as I hear my phone ring, wondering who could be calling me this early in the morning.
"Hello?" I ask
"Hey Dolly, it's me." Kenny said as I could see his smile.
"Oh hi. How are ya?"
"Well, I'm fine. How are you?"
"I'm just about the same."
"Listen, are you busy tonight?"
"No, why?"
"I thought you might like to go out to dinner."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Listen, I know that I said I might not have plans, but thank you for callin' and asking me." I said as I adjust my sunglasses.
"Okay. I guess I will see you later then."
"Yeah. I'll see ya sometime soon." Kenny said
"Bye Kenny."
"Bye Dolly." He said as we both hung up our phones.
I relax a little more before I headed inside to change.
...
Kenny's POV:
I just rested my back against my couch as I watched TV, nothing incredibly interesting is on as I tried to think about anything other than the one person I can't get out of my head.
My phone rang as I picked it up, hoping it was Dolly calling to change her mind.
"Hello?"
"Hey Kenny. It's Conway."
"Oh hey man. How are you?"
"Well, I was hoping you were Dolly."
"Dolly?"
"Yeah. I just talked to her."
"I have an idea."
"Yeah, what's that?"
"Why don't me, you, Dolly and Loretta all go out tonight?"
"Who's gonna watch Lisa?"
"She's already got a babysitter."
"What did Loretta say about this?''
"She's thrilled. She's sitting here next to me actually."
"She said no and I respect her for it. I'll just go out by myself."
"We'll call Dolly and arrange it. She won't even know you're goin' to be there." Loretta said
"No thank you Loretta, I gotta get goin' anyway."
"Honey?" Loretta pleaded to Conway.
"Plus, I heard Dolly was dating some man."
"Who?" Loretta asked
"Someone told me last night."
"They probably lied to you."
"I know Dolly very well and I just don't want her mad at me."
"She won't be."
"Yeah she will, but anyway, I gotta go and I will talk to you later, bye."
"Okay bye." Both Conway and Loretta said
...
Conway and Loretta's POV:
"We need to find a way to get them two together."
"How is that gonna work?"
"Hold on." I said as I grabbed the phone off the hook and dialed Dolly's number.
One ring, two rings, three rings
"Hello?"
"Hey honey, it's Loretta."
"Oh hi. How are you honey?"
"Oh, I'm fine. How are you?"
"Great! Just gettin' ready to go out to dinner." Loretta said as she seen her daughter Lisa's face peering from the side of her vanity.
"You and Conway have something special to celebrate?"
"Oh no! We just wanted to go out. Hey! Would you consider joining us?"
"Umm... No thank you honey. I'm still so jet-legged
and I may just order take out tonight."
"Honey, are you sure you're okay?"
"Of course! I just want to stay home and rest."
"Well, me and Conway will be at that little french restaurant we always go to, if you change your mind." I said as fixed my hair and makeup in the mirror.
"Okay."
"Well, I gotta get goin', but I will talk to you later honey." I said
"Okay honey, bye now." Dolly said as we put our phones back on the receivers.
"What did she say?" Conway asked me.
"She'll think about it." I said as I got up to walk downstairs.
...
Kenny's POV:
I thought about leaving after I got off the phone with them, but what if she doesn't show up? My heart was telling me something and so was the voice in my head.
"Maybe it won't be like I thought it would."
I got up and went to shower as I stood up the water, I seen Dolly's smile in my head.
"Ya know? Why don't you just ask her out?" That voice sounded all too familiar.
"Dolly?"
"I'm Dolly's little voice inside her head."
"What are you doing in my head?"
"She likes you."
"Oh yeah, how so?"
"She smiles all the time when she's around you."
"She does that with everyone."
"And I can tell y'all are perfect for each other."
"I don't know. I want to tell her my feelings, but like she once said "It's better to stay friends, than ruin something so good."
"Are you gonna let fear get in the way of going after the one person that could bring something so good and have joy in your life?"
"She does not like me that way and she made it perfectly clear. The reason why I am getting dressed and going to the restaurant is because it's boring and lonely as hell here."
"Then go get the one woman who can bring that reminiscent smile back to your face and that twinge of of sparkle back to those blue eyes."
"What if she's already found the one man that's already made her happy."
"There's only one man that can do that and that's you."
"What if doesn't work out?"
"It will and quit standing here talking to me and go get her."
"Fine!" I said as I hurried to get dressed and do everything before I left my house as I walked out the door.
...
Dolly's POV:
I decided to head to the restaurant anyway as I see Conway and Loretta, sitting in booth as they smiled.
"Dolly, what an honor to have you here this evening."
"Oh well, a couple of friends of mine wanted me to get of the house for awhile, so here I am."
"Yes, right this way." He said as he lead me to the booth they were sitting in as I kissed Loretta's cheek.
"You look radiant tonight honey." Loretta said as I smiled.
"Well, thank you. How are the kids?"
"Doin' great! Lisa is gettin' to be like a little Loretta."
"She's her mama made over."
"My baby is almost four years old."
"It doesn't seem like it."
"Your tellin' me." Loretta said as Conway excused himself.
"Where is he goin'?"
"Probably to the restroom."
...
"Hello ladies."
"Hi."
"I was wondering if Dolly would be interested in doing a number for us tonight?"
"I guess I could." Dolly said as she was just being polite.
"Alright, I'll announce you when it's time."
"Okay, thank you." Dolly said
...
They ordered their meals and a bottle of red wine.
Conway came back as he sat down.
"Care if I join y'all?" Kenny asked as Dolly almost choked on her wine.
"Sure.'' Loretta said as she smiled, gesturing that the seat was empty.
"Did y'all arrange this?"
"Yes." Loretta said
"Why?"
"Because we're all friends and we needed a night out."
"So, a double date?"
"Yes and now, here you both are."
"It won't be that bad darling." Kenny told Dolly.
"Okay."
...
Kenny's POV:
I'm sitting here beside her as she's talking about anything coming to mind with everyone as I felt her leg brush up against mine as we shared stories of the tour and what England was like.
"The culture there is marvelous and the food was just as great."
"Maybe we should take a vacation there one of these days."
"That would be amazing! I bet Lisa would enjoy it."
"She loves anything culture wise."
"Speaking of which, we're having a Thanksgiving dinner at our place again this year."
"You always do."
"We love y'all and we want you to come."
"We always do."
"Not separated."
"What do you mean?" Kenny asked them.
"We thought y'all could figure out why we got y'all together here tonight."
"You mean as in asking Dolly to be my date to Thanksgiving dinner?"
"And more." Loretta said as the guy came up on stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we have a very special guest here and so, put your hands together for Miss Dolly Parton." He says as Dolly walks up to the stage and he hands her the microphone.
"How are y'all tonight?"
"Great Dolly. How about you?"
"I'm great too!"
"What are you going to sing tonight?"
"Well, I thought about something today and maybe this will be my way of telling this person the way I feel about 'em."
Like the Phoenix
From the ash and dirt
I rose up from the pain and hurt
When I was at my very worst
I found you
Kenny sat there, watching her as if the song was from her to him.
Thought I could never love again
When a spark of light came beaming in
A thread of hope
For me to spin around you.
Dolly looked at Kenny as her eyes sparkled for me him as she smiled at him.
Unlikely angel
Standing there in front of me
As if you were my destiny
Like we were always meant to be together.
Unlikely angel
It feels so right inside your love
Like God has sent you from above
To honor, cherish, and to love forever
The smile upon your angel face
The heaven in your eyes replace
The hell that I've been going through
Before you
How long have you been there for me
I once was blind but now I see
A future full of hope
How I adore you
Unlikely angel
Standing there in front of me
As if you were my destiny
Like we were always meant to be together
Unlikely angel
You never know where one might be
In sacred halls or crowded streets
But God sent one straight down to me from heaven
Unlikely angel ahh ahh
Unlikely angel
Ahh ahh, unlikely angel
Unlikely angel
Hmm ahh ahh,
Unlikely angel
As she finished singing, Kenny walked up to her as they inched their faces closer together.
"Does this mean what I think it does?"
"What do you think it means?"
"I think it means I better clear some space in my closet." Kenny said as he held her in his arms as they laughed.
"Let's get goin'."
"Where?"
"We can go back your place or mine. You pick honey."
"Okay, yours."
"By the way, you are single. Right?"
"Not anymore." Dolly said as she pressed a kiss to his lips as they walked out of the restaurant, holding hands and laughing.
