Chapter 10: Double Date Part Two
Kenny's POV:
As we arrive at Tootsie's bar, our local attraction here in Nashville, I turn to look at Dolly as she's fixing her hair and makeup in her compact mirror.
"Baby, what are you doing?" I ask her.
"I'm fixin' my hair and makeup."
"Why? You look perfect as always."
" 'Cause, it's windblown and my mascara is a little smudged."
"You were the one who rolled down your window." I said as l got out and came to her side.
"That's because I was hot." She said as I opened her door and she slid out of the seat as we held hands and walked to the entrance of our local bar.
"And you still are." I said as I kissed her cheek.
"Oh my goodness! Kenny and Dolly, we were not expecting y'all." A voice called out.
"Oh hi. How are you?" Dolly asked her.
"Fine! It's so exciting having y'all, plus Conway and Loretta here."
"Where are they?"
"At your usual table."
"Thank goodness!"
"Dolly, can you sing tonight along with them?"
"Umm... I haven't been feelin' well that great today and I would, but I'm afraid that I can't tonight."
"Kenny?"
"Maybe when I've eaten something."
"Dolly, you should try something on our new menu." The woman said as I had a feeling that would not be a great idea.
...
Dolly's POV:
"Oh no! I'm sick at my stomach." Dolly said as I wrapped my arm around her waist.
"Maybe some soup would help fix that."
"Sure and a ginger ale along with it."
"What about a glass of wine Dolly?" The man asked.
"No, I can't drink. I learned that the last time."
"What are y'all? Pregnant?"
"Actually, I am." Dolly said as she beamed.
"I was just kidding!"
"I'm not."
"Aww honey, congratulations! When is the baby due?"
"In November."
"Boy or girl?"
"We have no idea yet."
"Don't they detect that now?"
"They do, but I'm not that far along yet."
"How far along are you?"
"Only two months along."
"I mean the week."
"Oh, I'm only fourteen weeks."
"How did y'all conceive him or her?" She asked as Dolly smiled.
"One long, romantic night two months ago."
"Are you hoping for a boy or a girl?"
"Either is fine.''
"Have y'all told Conway and Loretta yet?" She asked
"Not yet."
"What?"
"They have their own lives and it's hard to catch them at home."
"They'll be disappointed to hear the news through a tabloid later on if you don't tell 'em now. Speaking of them, here they come." She said as they made their way over to us.
"Oh honey, it's been so long!" Loretta hugged me.
"It has." I said as a man approached us.
"Hey Dolly! You wanna dance?"
"Not tonight Sam."
"Okay." He said as he walked off.
I sat here, listening to the sounds of people talking with the sound of various music blasting out the speakers as Kenny stood by me.
"Would you like to dance, my dear?"
"Sure." I said as we went out on the dance floor and I laid my head on his shoulder.
We danced to the slow song of Conway's voice as Loretta joined him out on the dance floor as he kissed her.
"So, who's watching Lisa tonight?" Dolly asked her.
"Patsy." Loretta answered.
"She'll be asleep when we get home."
"How are the kids by the way?"
"Their all doing great!" Conway said as he held Loretta by her hips as another couple talked to them.
"When are we going to tell them?" Kenny asked me.
"Over dinner."
"Okay."
...
We sat down at our usual booth as we ordered.
"Dolly, it's unusual for you not to order wine." Loretta said
"That's because I don't want a hangover in the mornin'."
"Well, after runnin' after Lisa all week. I need a glass or three."
"Slow down baby doll." Conway said
"You tell me that when you run after her all week."
"I have." Conway said.
"Well, I'm going to have some fun tonight." Loretta said as Conway shook his head.
"I have my eye on you." He said as she smiled.
"Don't you always?" Loretta questioned as she took a drink.
"Luckily, Patsy hasn't called me yet. She probably gave Lisa a bowl of ice cream and some cookies."
"That's an awful lot of sugar for a three year old." I said
"It's rare we let her have two treats in one night. Usually, she and Loretta have a fruit of some sort before bed." Conway said
"By the way, did you find that lizard that Ernest let free into our house?" Loretta asked him.
"Yeah, we found him underneath the couch." Conway said as she rolled her eyes.
"Lisa was so scared someone would crush him." Loretta said.
"She loves lizards?" Dolly asked.
"Oh yes and fishin' for worms." Loretta said.
"Who taught her that?" Dolly asked.
"Him and the boys." Loretta said as she pointed to her husband.
"She likes to go fishing, huh?" Kenny asked.
"We all do." Conway said.
"I do too, but haven't been since last year when my family and his family went." Dolly said.
"It's fun. We go all the time when we get a chance." Loretta said
"Do y'all go camping on the ranch?" Kenny asked.
"Sometimes and we have a place in Missouri where we like to go and it's got a big river with a camping ground." Conway said.
"I bet it's incredible." Kenny said.
"It is. The last time we went, the boys decided to tie ropes to all of the girls kayaks." Loretta said.
"I bet that was interesting." Dolly said.
"They all made it back fine, but they were all a little sunburnt." Loretta said.
"What about Lisa?" Dolly asked.
"She stayed with me and played in the rocks." Loretta said.
"It was fun to say the least." Conway said.
...
Dinner was served as we sat and talked, feeling Kenny's hand on my thigh as I was to tell them our big news.
"We have something to tell y'all." I said as Loretta sat back with Conway's arm around her.
"Well, we're all ears." Loretta smiled.
"You know what it's like to be married and at the same time, you want a little more." I said as Loretta looked at me.
"We've been married for a long time and we gained twelve kids out of it, so we know what it's like to want more." Loretta said as she took a drink of her water.
"Well, we decided to add a little one to our family." I said as I smiled.
"Dolly, you're pregnant?" Loretta asked.
"Yes!" Dolly said excitedly
"Oh my goodness honey!" Loretta said as she hugged me real tight.
"That's what I was thinkin' then the doctor told me and oh I can't wait!"
"Does everyone know?" Conway asked.
"Yes, it was hard for her not to tell everyone." Kenny said
"Well, I can't help it that I feel so joyful about us bein' pregnant." Dolly said.
"Honey, it's exciting carrying a baby, but also rough. I loved bein' pregnant, but also I was glad to have my babies, especially Ernest and Lisa." Loretta said.
"Lisa didn't wanna come out. She wanted to stay in." Conway said.
"What was the worst part about your pregnancy with her?" Dolly asked them.
"Morning sickness." Conway said as Loretta looked at him then back at me.
"Heartburn and the constant trips to the bathroom." Loretta said.
"She's feisty just like her mama." Conway said.
"She's a whole lot like you too." Loretta said.
"How?" Conway asked.
"Her pout and some of her features." Conway said.
"Is she a mama's girl or daddy's?" Dolly asked.
"Both." They said in unison.
"Maybe we could babysit her one night or for the weekend to give y'all some time alone." Dolly said.
"That would be nice, but I don't know how she'd like that." Conway said
"I would not mind babysitting her." Dolly said.
"Then, we'll plan on it." Loretta said.
"Sounds good." I said.
...
Dinner went by in a flash as we arrived home as I felt tired, more than usual as I felt the fatigue and setting in.
We went upstairs as I got out of my dress, wiped off some of my makeup and brushed my teeth.
I slipped into my bed clothes and crawled into bed beside my husband as I laid with head on his chest.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
We drifted off to sleep and our double date was a success.
