Chapter Fourteen

Madison stood in her  bathroom staring at the pregnancy test. She had taken one every morning  for the last week and they all came up with the same results. This  morning she had a doctor's appointment booked, with the hopes that the  test was coming out wrong. But first she needed to get ready for the day  and take the girls to school.

She grabbed onto her  clothes and quickly threw them on. Today Brandon had requested that she  meet him at his office building by noon. He hadn't told anything more  other than he had an announcement to make and wanted her to be there by  his side. He had however left clear instructions for her to wear a  business casual outfit. As a result she was now standing in front of the  mirror with skinny black dress pants, a cream blouse with red, yellow  and black flowers and a matching cream blazer. She brushed her hair over  her shoulder and did her face up with basic but elegant makeup.

"Mommy" Emma called "we  have to go". The mother in question couldn't hold back her laugh as she  grabbed her bag and left the room. Of all seven years the girls had been  alive she never once remembered them being excited about going to  school.

"What's the big hurry  about?" Madison asked getting the girls buckled into the car. Once they  were on the road the girls told her about the mad scientist that was  coming to class that day.

"We are going to do experiaments," Ella said excitedly.

"Experiments darling, there's no A in it" Madison giggled a little "but that sounds very fun. What are you going to learn?"

"The teacher said we are going to make silly putty," Emma said.

Ella quickly added "and have a paper airplane contest".

"You two are going to  have a really good time at school" Madison said pulling into the parking  lot. "Be good you two" she smiled back at the two girls. Within a blink  of an eye they were out the door and running towards their friends on  the playground. Madison's smile lasted only for a minute because her  thoughts shifted to her upcoming doctors appointment.

With a sigh she drove  towards the clinic. She was prepared to face any tests the doctor might  want to do, and in fact request for all tests. She shook her head trying  to get rid of the thoughts but they were persistent to stay. She  couldn't help but think about how this might affect everything. If she  were pregnant – well that would just change everything. What would the  Haywood's think of her? They already paid her to stay with Brandon, but  imagine if she was having a baby. They wouldn't want her to get rid of  it would they? Well that didn't matter, no matter how much money they  through her way she was going to keep her baby.

But she was jumping  ahead. There was no way she was having Brandon's baby. Those tests were  bond to be wrong. Her doctor would tell her the truth.

She pulled the car into a  nearby spot and parked. She grabbed her bag and headed inside. She had  been with this doctor since she got pregnant with Noah. She knew that  once the Haywood's found out they would demand she changed over to some  expensive doctor they trust. But she trusted Doctor Thomas with her life  and her baby's life. That is what mattered.

She entered the building  and signed in with a nurse. She waited for several minutes before she  was finally called back to on of the exam rooms. Given a robe to change  into she settled onto the table and waited.

"Hello Ms. Sweeney"  Susan Thomas a woman a solid ten years older than Madison walked into  the room "happy to see you here. But I do hope everything is okay". She  took a seat and held her clipboard with a pencil.

"I'm okay," Madison said twirling her thumbs around. She sighed a little trying to gather her confidence "but I am late".

Dr. Thomas glanced over at her "ah I see" she pulled out a drawer and removed a pregnancy test "have you taken one yet?"

Madison sighed and nodded "yeah, I've taken about six of them already. All come out with the same results."

"Positive?" the doctor asked kindly.

The younger woman sighed and nodded "yeah."

"We can take a blood test in order to confirm" she took a needle out of the drawer.

"I know we can take  blood but I was wondering if there was something else we could do..."  she trailed off a little. She didn't want to have to wait any longer to  know the truth.

The doctor glanced at her "when did you have your last period?"

"July. I missed August and September."

"In that case you are  about six or more weeks a long. Well in that case we can run a trans  virginal ultrasound" the doctor said "it an internal ultrasound that  results in probing the vagina. I know we have never done this before but  a regular ultrasound isn't do able until about twelve weeks."

Madison nodded in  understanding and leaned back against the uncomfortable bed. She lifted  her legs into the stirrups. The doctor got the probe ready and moved to  the end of the table. "The image is going to be pretty blurry but I'll  be able to see if you are expecting or not". Again the young woman  nodded.

Finally the doctor got  to work. Silently she moved the probe into place. After a few moments  Thomas smiled "congrats Madison. You are pregnant".

Madison took a sharp  breath in. she was expecting that answer but she didn't want to hear it.  She was hoping the tests were wrong. But there was no denying it now.  Right there on the screen was a small sack, that proved a baby was on  the way. She wasn't sure what she wanted to do first. Half of her wanted  to cheer and get excited. She always wanted a house full of kids. But  on the other hand she wanted to curse and scream and beat herself up.  How could she have been so stupid to get herself accidently knocked up –  again.

Doctor Thomas must have noticed her face because she softly added, "there are other options".

"No" Madison said a little too sharply "I want my baby". She sat up and reached for her clothes.

"The nurse will make an  appointment for you. You can have another ultrasound in about a month,  when you are closer to three months along".

Madison nodded "okay thanks".

"And considering the  months you should be due sometime in May, but we will get a more  confirmed date next month" the doctor said writing a quick prescription  for some prenatal meds "I'll see you in a month".

"Thanks" Madison  mumbled. When she was alone she got redressed and then headed to the  desk to make an appointment. She sighed a little and headed out to her  car, holding tightly to her bag.

This felt like a dream –  or maybe it was a nightmare. Either way she couldn't believe this was  happening to her. How was she going to tell the Haywood's? Or maybe she  wasn't going to...

"You're here" Brandon  beamed when he saw Madison walk forward. She was finally able to push  herself through the large crowd and enter the lobby of Brandon's classy,  downtown office building.

She forced a weak smile  "yeah, I wasn't expecting such a large crowd out front". She was clearly  shaken from the earlier events. Luckily, however, Brandon assumed it  was the crowd that threw her off.

He leaned forward and  gently kissed her on the cheek. "I know this can be a little  overwhelming. I'm aware that usually you try to remain in the background  but baby; I need you to be here with me. This is something you are  going to love," he said determinedly.

Madison nodded and  glanced over his shoulder. The Haywood's were standing off together and  she noticed Matt talking on his phone. Whatever today was seemed to be  important, considering everyone was there.

Rebecca smiled softly and walked swiftly over to them "finally you got here".

"Now we wont have to wait anymore," John mumbled walking behind her. Brandon flashed him a glare when he made that crack.

"We are fine with  waiting" Brandon said smiling down at his wife "but now we need to get  out there and make a speech". He reached down and gave her hand a  squeeze.

"Alright man" Matt  walked over "I'll get the introductions started". He gave his buddy a  nod and walked over the glass doors. He stood at the podium and started  to introduce Brandon and the company. He gave a little information about  the authors they have worked with in the past and gave a little blurb  about the Haywood's history.

Rebecca glanced over  Madison's clothing "maybe next time dress it up a little more?" she  suggests "especially your hair. It's a little flat".

Madison was a little  taken back. She thought the two woman were finally on the same page – or  at least in the same chapter now. She reached up and patted her hair  softly when the woman walked away.

"Okay babe" Brandon said  fixing his tie "lets do this". He flashed her his charming smile and  wrapped an arm around her waist. He led her out to the growing crowd.  There was dozens of reporters out front, several from newspapers and the  rest from news channels. Madison wasn't sure what she was expecting but  it certainly didn't involve this many people.

After the events of this  morning she was nearly shaking as she stood beside him. Everything just  seemed too much for her right now.

"Thank you for joining  us here today" Brandon said into the microphone. A hint of excitement  was noticeable in his voice, and the Haywood's couldn't remember the  last time they heard their son give a speech he was that passionate  about.

"Over the past couple  weeks there has been whispers and rumors going around stating that  Telling Tales will be branching out" he chuckled a little "and although I  don't usually keep up idle gossip I do believe it was suggested that we  would be merging with another company, that we were releasing a  magazine and my favorite we have signed J. K Rowling on to write a new  book". He chuckled and shook his head "well I'm sorry to burst your  bubble but all of those are wrong".

He glanced over at  Madison and smiled "a few weeks ago my wife and I were talking about how  our children love to read books. For those of you who don't know, she  and I have a teenage son and two little girls. Every night we will crawl  into bed with those little girls and read them a bedtime story. Books  are a foundation to our family and to educating our children.

"But my wife here  pointed out to me that not every child has that opportunity. For the  last fifteen years she worked in a lower income school where not every  child and family had the income to afford a pleasantry like books. I  also learnt that not many school libraries are as stocked with books as  we would like to believe".

He sighed a little "in  an ideal world I like to believe that everyone would have access to  books as they want them. But I am afraid to say that they don't. It's  difficult for some people to access public libraries because they are  unable to travel there due to mobility troubles or the cost of transit.  There are payments people can be concerned about, even if it is only a  late fee. These things can affect anyone. Children and seniors, those  with a home and those without. And all of these people should be able to  enjoy a book when they want to".

Madison reached forward  and gave his arm a gentle squeeze. She had an idea where this was going  and she couldn't be more excited.

"And so as a result my  wife suggested an idea. At first I only took it as a joke, just as she  did. Neither of us were serious about it" Brandon said "but as I got  thinking I realized just how amazing of an idea it truly is. And so I am  proud to announce our share a book campaign".

The crowd quickly began  to call out questions. There was dozens firing at them. All about how it  would run, who it would affect and when it would start.

Brandon flashed Madison a  calm smile. He wasn't overwhelmed by it at all. In fact he seemed ready  for all the questions because he was able to answer back in a relaxed  manner. "October is national book month, and in order to celebrate we  have collaborated with the Toronto district school board and several  senior centers and shelters. A total of thirty grade one classes across  the city will receive a new storybook. And with thirty students in each  class that is about nine hundred students in total. Ten shelters and ten  retirement homes will also received copies of either a romantic or  crime novel for each resident".

Madison couldn't help  but beam. To hear that he had not only listened to her idea but also  made it a reality made her want to melt. She was so excited that all of  these people were going to get books now. She hooked her arm around his  and smiled as she leaned into his side. What was this she was feeling?  Was it pride? Yeah it was. She was proud of him. Honestly before she met  him and only watched him on the TV she always assumed he was stuck up  and full of himself. But that just goes to show you shouldn't assume  things. Now that she was seeing his true colors, from his tea parties  with the girls and now to giving books away. She was starting to see how  truly sweet he was.

And maybe, just maybe she was starting to see that having a baby with him wasn't going to be so bad.

If you put aside the  fact that they were in fake marriage, he had no idea the truth and  chances were he was still hung up on his ex, then maybe things aren't so  bad between them. They had come to an understanding the last few months  and they had really started to work as a team.

In fact they even  started to feel like a real couple. Madison had grown to enjoy their  weekend dates and early morning flirting. She even enjoyed sharing the  bed with him now.

At the end of the day he  was a really good father, everything Madison dreamed of having for her  children. He was willing to help with early morning routines, he got  lunch ready for the kids, he would play dress up with the girls and went  out back to throw the ball around with Noah. He had made an impact with  the kid's lives. Noah had a male role model to look to and Ella had  finally started to open up to people and even Emma was learning to share  the spotlight with her sister.

Brandon had done so much  for three children that weren't even his, three children that just by  chance ended up in his life and although she knew he treated them the  way he did because he thought they were his she couldn't help but feel  like if he did know he would still treat them the same way. She knew he  would still be as kind and caring as he always has been.

Now add in another  child? He already has so much love. Adding another baby to the mix  certainly could only make things better. Right?

She was starting to have  doubts. Every day that she looked at the positive test she was  terrified. She knew what a bad idea it was and she was convinced it  would only end badly. But now she wasn't so sure. She went from knowing  to questioning.

But there was one thing she knew. She wasn't going to tell him – at least not any time soon.

Maybe she was a little  excited to have a baby with him. But until she knew for certain how she  felt she wasn't going to mention it. No, this was going to stay her  little secret for as long as possible.
