"Why'd you take it this far anyway?"
"I don't deserve her, I thought that if I acted like the biggest dick she'd ever met she'd move on. I didn't think she'd leave. I don't want her to leave Steve."
"It's a little too late for that." Steve says causing Bucky to clench his jaw.
"I think you're right. I fucked up; and now I'll never see her again." Bucky says making Steve clench his jaw. "It's my fault, I just wish I could go back in time and tell her the truth. Before it all turned out like this."
"The things we'd do differently if we had the choice, I have a few. It's called regret Buck."
"I know, and I regret it all."
Now –
You stare out the window of the little cottage by a lake and stare at the water as the moonlight reflects off it. It had been a few weeks since that fateful night and when you had run from the room and disappeared into the night. You ended up in your car and halfway across the state before you even realized what was happening. When it finally registered you had pulled your car over to the side of the road and just bawled your eyes out.
When you had looked up from your steering wheel you had seen a sign for cabin rentals. Before making a beeline for it you had shut off your phone to keep anyone from locating you. You needed time alone. It didn't matter how long it took, even if you spent a little more than you had, you could afford it. Thankfully they had a cabin left right next to the lake. It was a beautiful place, perfect for clearing your mind.
You take a sip of your morning coffee and marvel in the way it awakens your senses. This place was paradise. No noise, little to no people, and no men. You figured the team was going crazy looking for you; but you just couldn't bring yourself to care. You needed the solitude. As you stare at the ripples in the water caused from the wind your mind drifts back to that night. How could he do that? Was hurting you all those times not enough? Did he have to go and lie like that? Love you? Ha, that was a laugh. You don't do things like that to people you love.
Your brows furrow as you gulp down the rest of your coffee and set the mug in the sink. You'd wash it later. First things first, you needed a swim to clear your head.

"Are you sure you should be the one to go Buck?" Steve asks as he walks after his friend who was headed to his room. "You're kind of the last person she wants to see."
"I know, but I need to do this." Bucky says his eyes focused and sober for the first time in weeks. When she had disappeared, he had gone insane with worry. All he could think about was that something horrible had happened to her, and as the weeks went on his worry turned to sheer panic. It wasn't until moments ago when she had slipped up and let herself be caught on a general store security camera, that all his fears were laid to rest. Now he needed to go after her and try to make things right.
He knew he had been a grade A asshole, but her being gone just proved how much he needed her. He hadn't lied when he said he loved her, he had just been so panicked about her leaving that he had said it at the wrong time. It seemed like that was all he was good at now, doing the right thing at the wrong times. That night had been the last time he looked for solace in some random girl's arms. He knew he needed to change if he ever wanted her to give him a second chance to be the man she believed he was deep inside.
It would take some time but he knew that if it was for her, he could do anything. He walked into his room and instantly moved over to his closet and pulling out his backpack instantly started filling it with clothes he'd need when he got there. He knew she wouldn't be welcoming but he'd do whatever it took to change for the better. "Steve, I have to make it up to her somehow."
"And what if it's too late? What if she's done with her love for you, Buck?" Steve asks making Bucky's heart clench.
"If she wants to be free of me, then I'll give her that." Bucky replies grabbing his leather jacket off the bed and sliding his arms through the sleeves. Running a hand through his hair he pauses a moment his eyes meeting his best friends, "And if that's how it's gonna be, I want you to put me back under."
"Buck!"
"I mean it Steve, there's no telling what I'll do to myself or others. I don't want to hurt anybody else anymore. I want to protect everyone. I've hurt both you and her enough. Promise me Steve, please."
"Buck, I can't-"
"Please Steve, and one more thing..." he pauses grabbing the keys to his Harley, "When you put me under, don't tell her. I don't want her to know. She'll only blame herself and think that I'm trying to blackmail her into loving me and I can't take that. I'll do this for myself. She and I need closure. I've hurt her too much, but I need to try one last time; Because, I love her."
"Bucky..."
"Don't worry Steve," Bucky says patting his best friend on the shoulder as a sad smile fills his face. "It'll be fine. I'll be back before you know it." Before Steve has a chance to reply his friend is gone. Was Bucky doing the right thing? Would she forgive him? Steve could only hope and pray that his two friends could work everything out and they would be happy together. All that was left to do was wait.
~~~~~
The sound of a motorcycle caused you to momentarily forget what you were doing and you sputtered as you slipped underwater. You quickly righted yourself and breaching the water let out a few coughs as you tried to catch your breath. The engine cut off and you glanced back at your rental cabin to see a familiar silhouette and your heart starts to race in your chest. Gulping down a breath of air you force yourself to swim over the dock and pulling yourself up onto the dock you grab your towel and start to dab the water off your face before wrapping the towel around your waist.
You look down the dock to see him waiting at the end of it looking positively amazing and your heart jumps at the sight of him. Damn your heart for betraying your mind right now. You were trying to get over him. AS you near him he gulps down a breath of air his eyes filled with worry. "What are you doing here James?" You ask trying to calm your emotions. He takes a step towards you and you match him step for step as you step back away from him. Noticing your discomfort, he stops and pain fills his voice as he says, "How could you disappear like that? Do you have no idea how scared everyone was?"
"I think I did what I needed to do to get away from everything."
"(Name), everyone has been looking nonstop for you."
"I'll apologize later, right now I wanna know why you're here."
"Seriously (Name)? I came because I had to make sure you were alright."
"Why? Didn't you make it quite clear you didn't care about me?" You say causing the two of you to stare at each other as an uncomfortable silence fills the air. You're about to say something else when he says, "There are no words I can say that will ever change what I have done to you. I could say sorry a million times and it would never be enough."
"Words are pretty James, but in the end, they are just that, words."
"I know you probably won't agree to it," he pauses shoving his hands into his pockets as he stares deep into your eyes. "I want the chance to prove that I can change. I want to become the man you knew was deep down inside me. That is, if you'll give me the chance."
"Are you kidding me?" You retort fully ready to shut him down but there was something in his eyes that told you that he was being completely honest. He really wanted to change. You fought with yourself as you silently thought about what all could happen. People didn't change easily, if they did at all. You think about what all could go wrong and then it hits you, things couldn't get any worse. If you were being honest with yourself, if it didn't it would finally give you the motivation you needed to move on.
"You deserve someone so much better than me, but I can't stand the thought of you being with someone else. I know you won't believe me when I say it so, please let me show you how much I love you." Bucky says and your expression softens.
"Okay," You reply folding your arms around yourself. "This is your last chance James, after this, if things don't change, I really will leave forever and not look back."
"I understand," He replies a hint of hope filling his icy eyes.
"I take it you need a place to crash since all you brought with you was a bike and a bag?"
"I can look for a nearby cabin if my being here is too much too soon."
"No, it's okay, I have an extra room in my cabin." You reply making him cock an eyebrow at you in curiosity. "When I showed up this was the only cabin they had left. It's actually made for family vacations so there's an extra room. You can use it under one condition,"
"And that is?"
"You're not allowed in my room. Period. If you step one foot in my room it's all over." You pause for a moment to gauge his reaction before you add, "And I don't want any other women here at all. Some girl shows up here and I'm gone forever."
"Understood." He says without so much as another thought making your heart fill with the slightest feeling of hope.
"Good, now that we've got that out of the way, welcome to my little cabin." You say as you motion for him to follow you inside.
"Are you sure this is okay with you?" He asks as you both pass by his bike and he grabs his backpack out of the side bags and you nod slightly.
"Yeah, just follow the rules and it'll work out."
"Just do me a favor first please." He asks making you snap toward him annoyance in your eyes.
"Am I not doing you a favor by giving you a second chance?" you ask and he nods.
"You are, but this is different."
"How so?"
"Call Steve and let him know you're ok." He says and you pause the expression from before slides away from your face to be replaced by a knowing one. "They all were really worried."
"Okay, I'll call him after I get changed." You say as you turn and walk back to the cabin him following closely behind you. You were not looking forward to that phone call. Walking inside the cabin you hear Bucky close the door behind you and you find yourself focusing on his footsteps as he follows you. You reach the guest room and stopping turn back to him and tapping the door say, "This is you. All I ask is that you keep it clean, and no women allowed."
"Yes Ma'am." He replies sending a shiver of hope throughout your body.
"Well get comfortable, I have somewhere to be in thirty minutes." You say as you start to walk away from him toward your room.
"What? Where are you going?" He asks making you cock an eyebrow at him as you slowly turn back to him.
"Last time I checked what I do isn't any of your business." You reply making his brow furrow as he nods slowly. "But to answer your question, I have a job, well a few, I have to get too. I'll be back late, wait up for me or don't, I don't really care." You add as you turn on your heels and quickly walk to your room and closing the door behind you. Once closed you lean your back against the door and try to calm your racing heart. Had you made the right choice? You furrow your brow as you reach up and rub your forehead as a headache slowly starts to appear in your head.
You didn't have time for this. Quickly changing your clothes, you pull your hair up into a ponytail and grabbing your keys head back out your bedroom door. Taking a deep breath, you quickly walk past the room you had leant Bucky and without saying anything to him. You needed to get away to clear your mind and think about anything else. Climbing into your car you look over at the passenger seat to see your cell phone sitting there. You hadn't touched it since you left New York. Bucky had been right about one thing though. You did need to let everyone know you were okay.
You take a deep breath before you reach over and quickly turn the phone on. You knew it would take a few minutes for everything to catch up so you toss it back into the passenger seat to wait. After shifting the car into drive, you quickly head off toward your first job for today. It was a volunteer's job at a nearby rehabilitation ranch. You helped both animals and people. Mostly animals since that was what you were more comfortable with. Occasionally you would help with the children when one of the other workers couldn't.
You pull into the drive and let out a sigh of relief to see that everyone who was working today was there. It's not that you didn't like kids or people, it was just that with Bucky showing up like he did you didn't want to accidentally take your frustration out on the kids. They didn't deserve that. You pull up next to a friend's old pickup truck and shifting the car into park you hear the final ding on your cell phone. You reach over and quickly pull the phone up and unlocking it let out a heavy sigh.
There were too many messages to go through. Mostly from Steve. You knew you owed him an explanation and you needed to call him but you couldn't help but dread that phone call. He was the last person you wanted to talk to mostly because you felt that in some way you had let him down. He was always there when you needed him and when shit got real you had turned and ran leaving him with worry. You should have told him where you were but you were worried he would come after you.
You chuckle at that thought for a moment before you say, "No, he just sent the last person I wanted to see after me." You shake that thought from your head knowing he would never do that. Bucky must have given him no choice. Clearing your notifications, you go through your contacts and taking a deep breath hit call on Steve's contact. You close your eyes as you listen patiently for his answer.
"Hello? (Name), Are you okay?" He shoots off a round of questions and you feel your heart clench at the sound of his voice.
"I'm fine Steve." Was all you could reply as you try to compose your emotions.
"Thank god, you have no idea how worried I was." He exclaims a sigh of relief leaving his lips.
"Why did you let him come here Steve?" You ask not able to hold your curiosity back. You needed to know why.
"I tried to keep him away (Name), but he really needed to see you. We all need to see you."
"Then why didn't you come? Why let Bucky come all by himself?"
"He needs to work some things out, so do you. The only ones who can help you both is each other."
"He wants a second chance and I don't know if I can do that without breaking down every wall I put up being away from him. I don't want to be hurt again. I don't know if I can handle it."
"I'm sorry (Name), do you want me to come get him?" He asks and you pause for a moment as you think about taking him up on his offer.
"What has he been doing for the past few weeks? I want the truth." You say gritting your teeth. What he said in the next few seconds would determine if you kept your word and let Bucky have a chance or if you would kick him out.
"Honestly, he's been a wreck (Name). For the first couple weeks, we couldn't keep him away from a bottle. He was drunk all the time; but he was also celibate. He wouldn't look at a woman let alone let one near him. He just kept repeating how he messed up ad he wished he knew where you were so he could at least apologize to you. Then after an accident he gave up alcohol cold turkey. As far as I've known he hasn't picked up a bottle or drank even a sip of booze since then."
"Accident? What do you mean?" You ask suddenly becoming worried.
"He wrecked his bike. Thankfully no one was hurt, no one except Buck anyway."
"What happened?"
"You've seen him, he's fine on the outside, it's just his mind's a mess." Steve answers and you can hear other voices in the background.
"Steve, this isn't gonna give him any leeway in my heart or in my decision."
"I know, I just thought you deserved to know what happened. He's changing. For the better I hope."
"Well only time will tell." You reply and a knock on your window causes you to jump in surprise before looking up to see your fellow coworker Scott standing outside with a bright smile on his face. You weren't one for the cowboy type but he could really pull it off. You give him an apologetic smile before you point to your phone and hold up one finger saying you needed a minute. "Steve, I gotta go. I have to get to work."
"Work? What are you doing?" Steve asks curiosity in his voice.
"I'm volunteering, animals you know." You say not wanting to say too much. "Anyway, I'll think about what you've said. Talk to you later Steve."
"Okay, be careful (Name)." He says and you can tell he doesn't want to hang up but you need too.
"Will do, bye Steve." You reply as you quickly hang up the phone and toss it back into the passenger seat. You couldn't help all the stress that was piling up on you once again. Letting out a heavy sigh you open your door a climbing out come face to face with Scott.
"You okay?" He asks worry filling his eyes.
"Yeah, just dreaded that call a little bit." You say making him nod. Another thing you liked about him was that he didn't pry into your business. He knew that if you wanted to talk about something you would. "Any way, what do you have in store for me today?" You ask offering him a soft smile.
"Well, pretty much the usual. Since most of the horses are being used in the classes today there's really only one that needs your magic touch." He says a playful smile filling his face.
"Oh, I have a magic touch, do I?" You ask a slight chuckle escaping your lips.
"You do, Sarge would agree with me." He adds and you pale for a moment before it hits you who he was talking about.
"Oh right, Sarge, the horse." Sargent
"Yeah," he says his eyes narrowing slightly at me in worry as he adds, "You looked spooked there for a moment, who did you think I was talking about?"
"It's nothing, never mind, I had a momentary lapse of memory." You say quickly trying to cover your fear.
"Since you'll most likely finish work early tonight," he starts and you smirk at the slight blush in his cheeks. "How do you feel about letting me buy you dinner?"
"Dinner?" You ask and you look off toward the stables as you fight against the fear and worry in your mind. Scott was a good old country boy. He was the complete opposite of Bucky. He would never do any of the things Bucky had. Your mind was telling you to take his offer but all your heart felt was pain. "Can you let me think about it?"
"Sure, I'm not gonna lie and say I'll be disappointed if you say no; but I'll understand if you don't want too. I gotta supervise the classes so if you could let me know by lunch." He answers and you could tell he was a light bit hurt by your words but he wouldn't let it show.
"That works, I just need to-"
"You don't have to explain yourself to me. I know you've been through some shit, none of which I know about; but I know whatever it was, it hurt you pretty bad. I don't want to pressure you or force you to do anything you aren't ready for. Just think about it okay?"
"Thank you, Scott." You reply a smile filling your lips and he smiles back.
"Don't thank me darlin, it's just a rinky-dink old diner. Nothing fancy." He adds and you smile brightly and chuckle as he gives you a tip of his cowboy hat and jogs off toward the arena. You watch him for a moment your mind running wild with thoughts and scenarios of what a life with him would be like. You'd never want for anything, he'd never intentionally hurt you, you'd have all the things you wanted in your life, and you'd be happy; But was that enough? You clench your jaw as a picture of Bucky's smiling face fills your mind. Scratching the back of your neck you force the memory from your mind and head off to the stables.
