Christy Miller Volume III (part 3)
Will this part be as problematic as last time?
It kicks off on Memorial Day weekend with Christy and Katie finally driving to San Diego to attend a meeting of God Lovers, the youth group Doug is a part of. They find the boys' apartment empty because Rick (his roommate) has been hospitalized after showing off on the diving board went horribly wrong. HAHAHAHAHA.
Unfortunately Rick is released and they all reunite, including Todd. Yes, Doug, Rick, and Todd all live together. Because these books are deeply problematic, Katie has now decided that Rick is desirable, and is pursuing him. Later, Christy catches them kissing.
They go to the San Diego Zoo, where Rick is a monumental jerk, and Katie decides to end their relationship before it can really begin. I can only hope she doesn't change her mind.
When school lets out for the year, Katie reveals she has signed herself and Christy up for a week of church camp next month. Christy doesn't mind, because she thinks it sounds fun. But then Katie ends up being forbidden from going because her parents aren't Christians. This is news to me and kind of confusing. Christy doesn't want to go alone, but decides to anyway.
Then... *sinister music* ....Christy finds out she was signed up as a COUNSELOR for fifth graders. I saw this coming a mile away, but Christy didn't.
July comes, and Christy and a busload of ten-year-olds arrive at sleepaway camp. I feel nostalgic for something I never experienced. They have the first-night dinner, and a kid drops her earring in her applesauce and licks it clean and puts it back in her ear, which is freaking hilarious.
The girls at camp start shipping Christy with a counselor. She's not mature enough to handle some of the behavior problems and drama from the kids. I signed up for fun summer camp adventures and so far it's not being delivered. The little girl characters talk about nothing but crushes and romance and kissing, and the little boys are stereotypically rough, dirty, and smelly.
Christy starts shipping HERSELF with the counselor. He helps her with archery and she feels electricity when he touches her.
Christy is really impatient with the kids, who she sees as brats (pot calls the kettle black), and an older, wiser counselor gives her advice: you can never love too much. Christy decides to apply this advice...TO THE COUNSELOR SHE HAS A CRUSH ON.
Christy and the counselor sneak out one night and have a moonlight picnic in a rowboat. Christy imagines kissing him, but thinks of Todd. The next day, as the end of camp approaches, she is supposed to have a one-on-one chat with each girl, but she runs out of time because she takes a walk with the counselor instead.
On the final night of camp, they have some kind of hide and seek/capture the flag game, where Christy is immediately eaten up by fire ants. I accidentally sat in a fire ant bed this past summer and they devoured my legs but I went on with life. This, however, is Christy, so she has to be carried (by a guy) to the nurse's cabin and spend the night there, getting treatment on her legs. The camp counselor she has a crush on comes to take care of her, even cutting up her food for her. I realize at this part why I can't stand Christy. She's not independent and she can't take care of herself.
As night falls, Christy's heart aches because her week-long summer camp romance is over, and she will always wonder what it might have turned into. Has she forgotten about Todd??? Is she even dating Todd at this point or not? Who the heck knows?
A few weeks later, back home, Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob throw Christy a 17th birthday party on the beach with her friends. Rick was invited for some literally ungodly reason, but doesn't show up. Katie has decided she wants to date Doug and starts pursuing him.
End part 3, end volume III of Christy Miller. I really disliked part 3 as it was overall very boring.
