Chapter Four
Zoe woke up, sweating, as the sun reached around the corners of her room. Her braid had come out, so her dark hair was falling over her face, her bangs drooping over her black eyes. Her gray tank top, which had a cartoon golden star, was drenched. And she had to physically stop her hands from shaking.
She barely remebered the previous night, but the minute she thought of it, she choked out a sob. Percy was gone too. Zoe gripped her head in her hands and curled into a ball as the tears slid down her face.
Normally, Zoe was the strog confident leader of the archery team. But this was just too much to handle. Zoe was shaking as the hot tears slid down her face, sliently sobbing into her arms. And unfortuantly, Zoe had a lot of practice crying without noise.
A few minutes later, Zoe had dried her eyes, and stopped shaking. She took a shaky breath and stood up, before the room burst into green spots and she heard Rachel.
"Their not dead, just missing. And they need their friend," Zoë flopped back down on her bed, shaking her head back and forth.
"No, no, stop it!" She muttered, "I'll go missing next, then all of us will be gone, every single one of-" Zoë looked up.
"Just us," She whispered shakily, "Only us. No one else." Zoë leaped off her bed, heart racing. Not bothering to change, she slipped on her old sweatshirt after going to her closet to grab it. As she unhooked it from its hanger, she knocked into another shirt, which caused one at the very end to peek out , pushed back so she wouldn't have to see it. A flash of orange, and hose five letters.
Teens Against Monsters Every Day, it was a stupid name, as Zoë mentioned years ago, but it stuck.
"I need to go and see Sally." Zoë out on her headband and tiptoed through the house braiding her hair, as she walked through the kitchen snagged a golden apple and stuck it in her pocket. Sticking her keys into her pocket Zoë headed out the door. Tying her braid with a hairtie, she took the apple out of her pocket and took a large bite of the golden fruit.
She stood on the side the road, and held out a golden coin, the currency of her town, Olympus. As if by teleportation, a gray taxi cab skidded to a stop in front of Zoë, as if it could sniff out the money.
The back seat opened, and Zoë ducked her head under the door and climbed into the cab, ignoring the awful smell that lingered in its interior. And soon as she closed the door, a withered hand, almost as grey as the cab, reached out from the front seat. Snapping its fingers for the golden coin. Zoë placed it in her hand, and coolly said,
"Kelp-Head." Immediatly, the driver pressed on the gas and Zoë was launched back into the seat, swearing at the top of her lungs.
"WHAT THE FUCK! A LITTLE SHITTY WARNING NEXT TIME WOULD BE FUCKING NICE!" She swore, as the driver turned a sharp corner, launching her into the other window. Rubbing her cheek, Zoë somehow managed to buckle the army grade seatbelt that the driver had installed a few years ago.
Finally, finally, the cab stopped in front of an old apartment building, and Zoë quickly excited the car which immediatly speed off, to go hunt for more unfortunate people that needed a ride.
Zoë waited for a second, allowing her stomach to settle before heading into the building. Ignoring the women who asked why she was here (She was obviously new). And headed for the elevator. Pressing the button, and stepping inside, she pressed the seventh button and leaned against the railing as the awful elevator music played.
"Gods." Percy groaned, holding his hands over his ears. "Why do they have to play Apollo Tunes in the elevator? He's a bad enough music teacher!"
Zoë laughed along with Calypso, "Even you have to admit he's a pretty good nurse." Calgpso rolled her eyes.
"Your only saying that because Artemis accepted you into her archery team internship for the summer before we go to HighSchool!"
Ding! Zoë was jolted from her memory as the elevator doors opened up to the seventh floor. Zoë stepped out and turned left down the hall. She walked down the hallway, mindlessly staring at the red carpet, and the beige walls.
"They repainted the apartments." Zoë muttered under her breath. It shouldn't have been surprising, after all the nine friends barely talked ever since... The end of ninth grade. And as Zoë and all her friends would be seniors next year, it's been a long time.
Finally coming to Sally's door, Zoë knocked twice and aimlessly rocked back and forth in her heels, hoping Sally was home. Within a few seconds, a girl with curly blonde hair opened the door, Zoë took note of her bloodshot eyes, before opening her mouth for the girl to cut her off.
"Look, I don't know who you are but we don't wanna see anyone." She was about to close the door when Zoë stopped her.
"Look, Annabeth." Zoë started, ignoring her shock that she knew her name. Percy talked all about her in freshman year, after him and Calypso broke up. Annabeth this, and Annabeth that. She was a year below us and every time something happened, Percy would say Annabeth this, and Annabeth that. It was quite endearing, in fact. Zoë didn't blame Annabeth for having a short temper, after all she'd seen the love eyes they gave each other. Annabeth even bought a hamster that she named Percy. "Sally will see me, old friends with Percy. Really old friends." Annabeth frowned, before calling Sally over, saying "THERES SOME STRANGE GIRL WHO SAYS SHES OLD FRIENDS WITH PERCY WHO WANTS TO SEE YOU?!" Immediately, Sally showed up in the door frame and engulfed Zoë in a hug, then invited her inside.
The apartment wasn't really different from what Zoë remembered. Photos of Percy were everywhere, and a few new ones of him and Annabeth. Zoë knew however, if she went into Percy's room, which was probably still the subject of a natural disaster, sitting on his bed stand would be the same photo on Zoë's.
Sally led her into the kitchen, where Zoë took a seat gladly.
"So when were you friends with Percy?" Annabeth asked, taking a seat across from Zoë.
"I'll just ignore the fact that you think we're not friends anymore. And go check the photo on Percy's dresser, you must have seen it a lot the number of times I think you were probably in his room." Zoë said, ignoring Annabeth's flushed face and she walked out of the kitchen to get the photo.
Sally, brought over a plate of blue cookies. "How have you been Zoë dear? Your not living with Nyx anymore are you?" Zoë took a cookie and took a bite of it and sighed, she'd forgotten how good they were.
"No, I'm living with Tethys, I haven't seen her or my father since middle school." Zoë said, the. Suddenly she leaned forward.
"Sally, I wanted to tell you something," Sally placed down the blue of mig of hot chocolate that she held in her hands.
"Zoë is something wrong?" Sally asked, but then as he fates would have it Annabeth burst through the doors holding a golden picture frame in her hands and smacked it down In front of Zoë.
"See? It's me and Percy!" Annabeth said shakily, Zoë gave her a sympathetic smile before opening the back of the frame and taking out a more worn photo, of the old gang standing arm in arm. Apparently it was too much for Annabeth and she burst into tears. Zoë patted her on the back, telling her that it was okay and that most people forget that the nine friends were even friends, that it was okay to miss Percy even if he was an idiot, and a few minutes later Annabeth was sitting down and eating a blue cookie drying her eyes.
"Okay, Zoë what do you wanna tell me?" Sally asked, and Zoë breathed in.
"They're gonna take me next, Sally. You remember what happened." Zoë bit her lip, "And until they do I promise I will try to find Percy before..." She led off wiping a tear that had slid down her face.
"Zoë dear, please, don't worry about Percy. We both know that the only thing to do is pretend like you don't realize anything is happening. Okay?" Sally said, tone serious. Zoë nodded just as her phone went off. Zoë picked up, it was her mom.
"Zoë," Tethys said, tone sad and nervous, "Please come home, your father is here. He wants you to move back in with your mother and him."
