Chapter Seventeen- These Things Take Time

"You look...awful." MacKenzie frowned. "Maybe you do need me to be your nurse."

"Oh, stop," Roy scoffed.

"It's been three days, Roy."

"Three..." He knew he had been out of it for awhile, but he didn't know how long. "You left your wallet here for three days."

"Oops."

"So...how much do you know about me? What do you know that I haven't told you?"

MacKenzie pursed her lips. "Well, I know you've had a crush on my sister for awhile."

"Awhile?" Roy exclaimed. "I proposed to her. I jumped off a goddamn bridge for that woman."

"I know that part. Obviously."

"Yeah. Obviously."

"I know about the money, and the lawsuit. And I'm advising you to forget about it because it' s just going to cause more legal problems.

"What would you know about legal problems? I mean, you're a girl."

"Really?" MacKenzie laughed. "That's why, huh?"

"I'm sorry," Roy rubbed his face. "It doesn't matter how much money they give me. It's not gonna help me walk."

"You need to get over her. You're not the first guy to lose a girl."

"So you knew who I was when I first came to the hospital."

"Well, I heard about Roy the stunt double and how he didn't much get along with the man he was doubling for. And I kind of figured when I read your charts because Alice came crying to me that week after it happened that you fell and it wasn't looking good."

"You didn't say a single thing about it."

"I didn't think it mattered. She's not as much of a heartless bitch as you'd think. She still cares about you. She still feels guilty."

"How often do you talk about this?"

"When she saw us at the bar."

"That's why you were upset."

"She's not particularly fond of us talking."

"She knows about us then."

"Like I said, she's not too happy."

"But Sinclair...Alice is all over Sinclair."

"He has a bigger wallet, Roy."

"So you told me you saw an old boyfriend at the bar, that's why you were upset."

"People lie."

"You're better than that."

"I was sort of referring to you."

"I'm not your boyfriend, MacKenzie."

"What am I then?" her voice quivered.

"I don't know, MacKenzie."

"Well, make up your mind," she clenched her fists.

"Okay."

"Don't take more than two." MacKenzie acknowledged the pill bottle Roy absent mindedly tapped his fingers on. "I have to go."

Roy couldn't fathom how emptiness could be so heavy.
