Chapter Forty Seven- Conversations

Silence.

...

"Are you gonna say something or not?"

...

"Have you found anyone?"

...

"Why do you care?

...

"Just wondering."

...

"How's the girl you're humping?"

"Good..."

"Wow. Nice response."

"I'm sorry."

"What are you apologizing for?"

"I don't know."

"Make up your mind and explain yourself."

"I can't."

"Why's that?"

"Because I'm a bad person."

"You're not...a bad person."

"The cold is growing stronger than the guilt."

"It's quite warm here."

"You're always on my mind, MacKenzie."

"Yet you're still humping some Oklahoma chick."

"I'm not humping."

"She's humping. You're present. And engaging in said gesture. Therefore, you are technically humping."

"My coworker asked me how I have sex."

"You have a job?"

"Uh-huh."

"What did you tell your coworker?"

"To fuck off, basically."

"My client died."

"Oh."

"I don't come to the apartment complex anymore."

"Still paying the rent?"

"Do you really care?"

"Kinda."

"I'm a nanny now."

"How's that working for you?"

"I want to die."

"Same."

"Still?"

"You have a gift, Kenz. And it's not caring for children."

"How would you know?"

"You're a nurse."

"I cared for you."

"I know that."

"I cared for a lot of people. Adults and children."

"Sick adults and children. Do you just sit all day and play mother now?"

"Sorta."

"It's not you."

"What are you doing better?"

"Library work."

"And that somehow makes you a better person than me?"

"I didn't say that."

"You implied it."

"Are you happy?"

"Are you?"

"I know you're not. I can tell."

"You're not a librarian."

"You're not a nanny."

"I got a dog."

"I stood up."

"What?"

"I stood up."

"I'll believe it when I see it."

"You will."

"Don't lie to me, Roy."

"I'm not."

"You're never gonna come back."

"I am."

"I'll believe it when I see it."

Silence.
