Chapter 41
Yoongi and Namjoon sit across from each other at Luna's dining table. Namjoon looks stern and contemplative as if he is sizing him up. Yoongi's expression is blank, as usual. He always hides his true intentions.
Luna is sitting at the head of the table, looking between them nervously. She wasn't expecting this meeting to be so tense. It's getting late and she is beyond exhausted. Adrenaline can only help you function for a set time. After a while, your body wants to give in to the lull of sleep.
In summary, she is tired and grumpy and just wants this to be over.
"Okay," Luna clears her throat, "Min Yoongi, RM. RM, Min Yoongi,"
"Hello," Namjoon smiles.
"Hi," Yoongi nods in response.
They fall back into an uncomfortable silence, with no sign of giving in. She groans and leans forward, grabbing their attention.
"Listen, I have not slept well for ages," She begins, "So, Yoongi, ask your questions. RM, explain your proposition, okay?"
They nod curtly at her before looking back at each other.
"What questions do you have?" Namjoon asks curiously, folding his arms.
Yoongi sighs, leaning forward as he tilts his head. He looks up at Namjoon, narrowing his eyes. He is in interrogation mode.
"So, you're the son of the infamous Grim, the brother of Faith, correct?" He begins.
"Yes," Namjoon replies.
"And now you are RM, the leader of The Reapers?" He asks.
"Yes," Namjoon says firmly.
"The Reapers... a huge criminal syndicate that started in America, spreading across the globe steadily. Every detective and criminal knows your name," Yoongi smirks, "Why does the infamous RM want to be the good guy all of a sudden?"
"That is a good question," Namjoon smiles, "As you know, I was raised in that life. I have seen some messed up things. Innocent people being killed, trafficked, and hired. Kids being taught how to sell drugs; homeless people being asked to deliver items for money. People who never had any other choice. But in society, they are criminalised for having to exist. With no other options, no help, and no support, they are looked down on. After I made a name for myself, I realised what that came with. I was done. Luna fled, but I couldn't leave The Reapers for some psychopath to take over. So, instead, I changed it. I wanted to use my skills for something, so I just adjusted our priorities,"
"That's reasonable," Yoongi admits, "But hard to believe,"
"I know a way that you will believe me," Namjoon smirks, pulling out his phone, "Agent Jonathan sends his regards,"
Yoongi's phone beeps, making him go pale. For the first time in a while, Yoongi actually looks really startled. He pulls out his phone and reads the notification. He sighs and snickers, sliding his phone away.
"Well played," Yoongi admits, "How long have you had people in the FBI?"
"4 years," Namjoon confirms, "Agent Jonathan is the reason I know you so well,"
"I see that," Yoongi sighs, "Last question: What would my job be?"
"Well, exactly what you are doing right now," Namjoon says firmly, "Luna will take over for Jimin's old job, so I need a good detective to ensure the correct people are going away,"
"And how will you affect that?" Yoongi asks, "I have never locked up an innocent person,"
"True," Namjoon nods, "But you have had to let people go free. I'll make sure that doesn't happen,"
"How?" Yoongi asks, "Will you just kill all the suspects for each of my cases?"
"No," Namjoon chuckles, "When you are stuck on a case or need help, you call on The Reapers, and we get the evidence or information you need. We will only ever kill a person who will get away with their crimes, no matter what the evidence is,"
"I see," Yoongi grins, "I like that,"
They both stand and shake hands, smiling happily.
"So, we are in agreement? You'll work for The Reapers?" Namjoon confirms.
"Under the condition that I am not expected to kill anyone," Yoongi replies.
"That's fine," Namjoon cocks his eyebrow at Luna, "That's what Faith is for,"
Yoongi gives Luna a strange look, the sort of look she can't place with any specific emotion. After a moment, he smiles.
"As long as she is okay with that," He says softly.
Ah, pity? Concern? Is that what that look means?
"As long as they deserve it, I'll kill anyone," Luna smirks, folding her arms cockily, "It's what I'm good at,"
So, they talk about The Reapers and when Luna will start her new job at the 'self-defence' school. Yoongi seems disappointed that Luna will be leaving the police force, but he also understands the need for someone to be training people.
After a while, they head out, leaving Luna to finally head to bed, feeling content, yet conflicted. She has no idea how she is going to convince Taehyung. At this point, she has two choices: convince him to at least understand that this is her life now, or lose him forever.
And she doesn't want to lose him again.
She came to Korea to flee her life as Faith. Even hearing her old name sent shivers down her spine, reminding her of her actions and life. But Faith is a part of her, an aspect of her skill set, her personality. She can't keep running from it all. She needs to face it head-on. She isn't just Faith or just Luna. She is both. She won't let anything force her to separate her identities, not even ethical monism. She can be Faith and Luna. That is who she is.
. . . . .
Taehyung shuffles into his apartment, feeling frustrated and irritated. He spent the day trying to corner Luna and convince her not to do this. But she started to get more and more annoyed at him. He tried to talk to Yoongi about it, but he just started pointing fingers at him, just like he did last night.
How can someone possibly think that working for the mafia and defending a criminal in court is even remotely similar? Technically, Taehyung doesn't do that here. He is a prosecutor. He works alongside the detectives. But when he was in America, he had to defend some intense people. But that's not the same thing.
There is a court system for a reason. Lawyers defend people so that there is an assurance that the right people are going to jail. That's how it works. Taehyung had to defend bad people so the detectives could ensure they have the right person.
How is that the same as working for the goddamn mafia?!
Taehyung sighs, putting his things away before heading for the shower. When he gets out, he moves into the living room, ready to watch something for the night.
Suddenly, someone grabs him from behind, throwing him onto one of his dining chairs, right against the wall. The impact winds him, giving his attacker enough time to cuff his wrists to the chair. As he starts to realise what is happening, he tries to slide off the chair, the cuffs loose enough for him to stand and take the chair with him if he wants to. But his captor has other plans. He roughly places his boot against his chest, looming threateningly over him. Taehyung looks up, but he's not surprised when he sees his face.
"Stay still, Taehyung," Jungkook sneers, "Or I'll just kill you now,"
He slowly removes his boot and Taehyung stays still. He knows what Jungkook is capable of. If he wants to live, he needs to stay put.
Jungkook ties cable ties around his feet, securing him to the chair. When he is finished, he stands and dawdles away, grabbing another chair so he can sit in front of him. He is wearing black clothing, a mask discarded to the side. How did he get in here? What is his plan?
And why him?
"How did you get in here?" Taehyung demands, glaring up at him.
"If I tell you that, I'll have to kill you," Jungkook smirks, "Not that killing you is off the table. It took a while, but I was able to navigate the security. I had to do so much research. It's amazing security, but nothing can keep me out,"
"Okay... why are you here?" Taehyung asks, "I don't have anything you need,"
"You do," Jungkook narrows his eyes at him, "Faith,"
Taehyung rolls his eyes.
"Her place is a lot easier to break into," Taehyung sighs, "Why grab me?"
Jungkook rolls his eyes.
"I assume you have already found out that my little picture was bullshit, right?" Jungkook confirms. Taehyung nods, waiting for him to continue, "Well, I visited her after you confronted her, and she won,"
"Huh?" Taehyung frowns, "What do you mean by she won?"
"She overpowered me easily," Jungkook smirks, "She had me right there, gun to my head... she could have killed me... and I'll make her regret not doing it. She killed my boss, and my new friends... so I am going to take something from her..."
Jungkook looks disconnected, fiddling with a large knife as he stares off into the distance. It's almost like he's not even talking to Taehyung directly. His whole demeanour is making Taehyung nervous.
"What do you mean?" Taehyung asks tentatively.
Jungkook turns to look at him, the corners of his lips slowly lifting into an evil grin.
"I'm going to call her," Jungkook giggles, "Then, I'm going to kill you, and leave, okay?"
Taehyung's eyes widen. He's not going to give her time to stop it. He's going to die here.
"Wait..." Taehyung gulps, but Jungkook directs his attention to his phone. He presses a button, holding the phone between them on speaker.
She answers.
"Hello?" She asks. Taehyung can hear the confusion in her voice.
"Hey, Faith," Jungkook murmurs.
"Go away, Jungkook," Luna sighs.
"You don't want to know why I am calling?" Jungkook asks, frowning as he tilts his head.
"No," Luna snaps, "What I want to know is why you didn't take the get out of jail free card I gave you,"
"Why would I do that?" Jungkook chuckles, "I was made for this life, Faith. So were you,"
"Yeah, I know, I'm sure you already know that I'm Faith again," Luna chuckles, "Considering Seokjin and Hoseok are dead now... where are the rest of the members? Hm? I need a list,"
"Well, add me to the list then," Jungkook smirks, "Because I will keep working until I die,"
"You don't need to do this, Jungkook," Luna says seriously, "You can flee, start again, have a life... live happily,"
"I was happy with my new family, but someone killed them all," Jungkook mutters angrily.
"Ah, that's what this is about? Huh," She sighs, "Anyway... you have two choices... move on, or die,"
"I'd rather die," Jungkook grins.
Taehyung watches him with mounting confusion. She is threatening him, and he is threatening her, yet he is acting like he is calling his crush for the first time.
How crazy is this guy?
"Jungkook... just stop, okay?" Luna says softly, "Please, you can do better than this,"
"Why can't I rejoin the Reapers?" Jungkook asks curiously.
"One, you want me dead, and I'd be your boss," Luna says firmly, "Two, RM doesn't trust you,"
"I'm sorry... boss?" Taehyung demands.
Jungkook looks up at Taehyung and grins.
"You didn't know Luna will be the leader of The Reapers in Korea?" Jungkook scoffs, "Ironic,"
Luna doesn't respond, suddenly becoming silent.
"Oh, Faith! I forgot to mention that I have a friend with me," Jungkook grins, "Say hello, Taehyung,"
Taehyung glares at him, refusing to play his game.
"I know,"
Taehyung and Jungkook both look down at the phone in confusion.
"What do you mean, you know?" Jungkook demands, getting up from his seat.
"Do you think I'm an idiot, Jungkook?" Luna chuckles, "I knew you were there before Taehyung did,"
Jungkook's eyes widen even further, the realisation dawning on him. He hangs up the phone, panicking slightly. He grabs his bag, shoving all of his belongings into it, before rushing towards Taehyung's front door.
Just before he reaches it, it swings open, revealing 3 men. They storm into the room, their eyes on Jungkook. Jungkook panics, spinning around to find another exit. But there isn't one.
"JEON JUNGKOOK!" The tallest of the men booms, startling both Taehyung and Jungkook.
Jungkook looks over his shoulder at him, almost pleadingly.
"Sit," The man gestures to the seat Jungkook was just in, his eyes firm and certain. Jungkook does as he is told, slumping a little in the chair. One of the men restrains him, while the other unties Taehyung.
Once he is free, Taehyung jumps up and backs away, holding his hands up as if surrendering.
"It's okay, Taehyung," The taller one smiles at him, "Luna will be here soon,"
"Okay," Taehyung breathes, moving over to the sofa to sit down. He watches the men warily, but he feels comfortable in their presence. He has no idea why, but he feels safe.
Luna will be here soon, it's okay.
. . . . .
Luna bursts into Taehyung's apartment, looking around for him.
"Tae! TAE!" She rushes into the living room, looking from Namjoon to The Reapers, to Jungkook. Finally, she spots Taehyung sitting on the sofa, almost as far away from them as he can get. She sighs, smiling a little with relief. She moves towards him and kneels in front of him.
"Are you okay?" Luna asks. Taehyung nods, looking up at her.
"His plan was to call you, and kill me before you got here," He sighs, "I assume you have one of these guys watching me or something?"
Taehyung gestures to the men dismissively. One of them cock their eyebrow at his tone, but they don't retort.
"No," Luna smirks, "I set up my own surveillance on the building after Jungkook confronted you in the parking lot,"
"I see," Taehyung nods. He folds his arms, looking down at her warily, "So... it's true?"
"What?" Luna asks softly.
"You're going to be the leader?" He mumbles, glancing at the others.
She nods, still smiling.
"Let's deal with this first, then you can ask RM," Luna gestures to Namjoon, making Taehyung's eyes widen.
"The tall loud one?" Taehyung gasps, "Damn..."
Luna chuckles, shaking her head as she moves towards Jungkook. He is glaring at the ground, his ears red from embarrassment. He seems to always only fail tasks that involve revenge. It's interesting, considering he used to always tell her off for letting her emotions control her actions, especially in life-or-death situations.
Ironic.
"Jungkook," Luna sighs, "I don't want to kill you,"
Jungkook lifts his gaze to her. So does Namjoon.
"Luna," Namjoon mutters, "He was going to kill Taehyung... he might still do it,"
Luna stares at Jungkook, searching his eyes for any sign of remorse or guilt. But all she can see is pain. He lost his first real father figure 5 years ago, and it has been a slippery slope since. He sought shelter and comfort in Seokjin, and he must have become friends with Hoseok. He has lost so many people. Even knowing this, Luna doesn't regret killing Seokjin and Hoseok.
"Jungkook... why won't you change?" Luna demands, "I've given you so many chances... why won't you change?"
His eyebrow twitches, smirking up at her.
"Isn't that a little hypocritical?" He grins, "You and I are the same... you came back, so why would I leave now?"
"Listen," Namjoon sighs, standing to talk to Luna quietly, "He isn't going to stop... how about I deal with him?"
Luna's gaze shifts, glaring up at Namjoon firmly.
"Deal with him?" Luna repeats, "What does that mean?"
"Restrain and teach... at least until I'm certain he can leave... worst-case scenario we pass him to Yoongi,"
Luna nods along, considering this proposal. If Namjoon can't knock some sense into him, then going to prison might help. Well, it's better than dying anyway.
"Okay," Luna nods towards Namjoon's men, who instantly move forward to untie Jungkook, ready to take him away. Jungkook attempts to shove them away, his eyes planted firmly on Luna.
"This isn't over, Faith," He mutters gutturally, trying to pull out of their grip. She rolls her eyes and sighs.
"I really hope it is," Luna mutters, "Maybe one day you can join The Reapers, or just live... until then, please just let us help you,"
Jungkook scoffs, averting his eyes as he breathes deeply.
"Take him to Building 7," Namjoon tells the men sternly, "Room 33 should do. I'll be there soon,"
They nod, leading Jungkook from the apartment. Luna watches as one of the men whispers something to Jungkook. Whatever he says has a huge impact on Jungkook, because he straightens up and walks comfortably before disappearing into the hallway with them. The door closes behind them, leaving Taehyung, Luna, and Namjoon in tense silence.
"So," Namjoon claps his hands, beaming at the two of them, "I hear that we need to talk some things over?"
Taehyung looks from Luna to Namjoon, his jaw quivering slightly. He nods curtly, gesturing for Namjoon and Luna to sit on the sofa with him.
(A/N) Ah, the Luna and Jungkook issue. She doesn't want to kill him because she feels sorry for him. Yet, he doesn't want to be helped or saved.
Will he ever self-reflect and grow as a person, or will he be stuck in his past and trauma?
See ya Monday 🫰🫰🫰
