Chapter 32
They have been working on this case for almost a month now. Luna has a feeling they are closing in. The entire criminal syndicate that The Eye runs has become chaos. Police officers are being intentionally attacked, guns being openly used in broad daylight, and more suspects are being arrested and questioned.
From their arrested suspects and perps, they have been able to gather more and more helpful information, all thanks to Luna and her past. She knows what she needs to look for. She knows where they will hide any information they communicate, where coded messages will be left, and what specific photos mean on their devices. Even the perps are surprised by her questioning. But it has taken them a long time to get to where they are.
Seokjin is breathing down their necks, the violent increase causing his superiors to become alarmed, taking their fear out on him. He sees these crimes as a problem, whereas Luna and Yoongi see it as proof that they are on the right track.
They were able to get a warrant to target a specific house. They took down a huge drug smuggling ring within 24 hours of receiving this warrant. After a few interrogations of the surviving suspects, they were able to confirm that this was run and started by The Eye. But the surviving suspects did not live for very long.
They still haven't identified the members within the police force but have been able to find out exactly how many have infiltrated them. There are 3 working at their location, and 5 others at other nearby locations. From this, they figured that this location must be important to The Eye, which has led them down the path of pinning down the general area The Eye is in.
It is the suburb Taehyung lives in.
Luckily, Luna knows that Taehyung's apartment is safe. She asked Jimin to test the security, and he almost got arrested. No one is going to be able to hurt him.
Today is Saturday, and Luna and Taehyung are going to Jimin and Hoseok's house to hang out and ask a few questions. They have done this a few times, but mostly end up just drinking merrily with them. Jimin has been trying to be helpful but doesn't have a lot of time on his hands with the increase in work. Namjoon has him scoping and snooping around specific locations, which Jimin has passed on to Luna. This is how they were successful with the drug bust.
Hoseok hasn't been too helpful. Luna was expecting him to know exactly what is happening, considering he deals with a lot of different criminals. But apparently, everything he deals with is normal on his end. Some of his regulars are more nervous than usual, but they're still coming, still paying and still interacting. She is glad Hoseok isn't in danger, but it still makes her nervous.
Luna and Taehyung arrive at their apartment, typing in the pin automatically and entering. They move into the living room to find it empty.
"Jimin? Hoseok?" Taehyung calls out as he moves into the kitchen, placing the bag of alcohol on the bench.
Luna watches as their doors open and two zombies come lumbering down the hallway, yawning, stretching, and rubbing their tired eyes.
"You're here already?" Hoseok mumbles, looking down at his phone as he runs his fingers through his unruly hair.
"What's the time?" Jimin grumbles.
"It's 7 pm," Taehyung chuckles, "We said we'd be here at 6... we are technically late,"
Hoseok squints at his phone in disbelief before looking up at them.
"Sorry, big job last night," Hoseok yawns.
"Yeah, same here," Jimin gestures vaguely, "But separate,"
"All right, Tae and I will order some food, you guys go clean up," Luna smirks.
They nod numbly, turning and heading back down the hallway. Jimin heads to the shower first, so Luna has assumed Hoseok is just sitting on his bed, blankly staring at the wall, as he does when he's exhausted.
She orders the food and by the time it arrives, Jimin and Hoseok are both showered and dressed, sitting at the dining table expectantly with a drink each.
Taehyung serves the food while Luna makes them both a drink as well. They sit down at the table with them, humorously watching them slowly wake at the smell of delivery.
"So, how have you been?" Luna asks, waiting for an explanation.
"Pretty good," Jimin grins, "The training centre is going well, but I have had to delegate a second in charge with all this work,"
"Lucky," Hoseok smirks, "I don't have a second in charge, I wouldn't trust anyone to do what I do,"
"How is it all going?" Taehyung asks Hoseok nervously. Taehyung has already learned that Hoseok doesn't like being asked too many questions about his job.
"Pretty normal, honestly," Hoseok sighs, "A regular tried to request more than usual for half the price,"
"I assume you had to deal with that?" Luna smirks. Hoseok grins, his eyes slightly hooded with the weight of another death on his shoulders.
"I assume you already know the answer to that," Hoseok grins.
Luna nods, recalling the homicide that came in a few days ago and landed on their task force desk.
"Is he talking about that homicide?" Taehyung mutters.
"Yes," Luna chuckles, watching as Taehyung pales before turning green. He averts his eyes from Hoseok, trying to calm himself. Luna is sure that he's feeling this way because of the details of the case. They have not been able to identify the bodies of any of the victims yet. They were mutilated.
Taehyung seems to forget that they are criminals sometimes. Moments like these remind him of the reality.
Later, he is definitely going to ask her, again, if they are doing the right thing being friends with them.
"What about you Jimin?" Luna asks, breaking the silence, "Got any updates for me?"
"Not really," Jimin sighs, "RM sent me out on a job last night, but it was just to take down a few members,"
Luna groans in annoyance.
"You reckon you could keep a few alive so I can question them?" She demands.
"No," Jimin smirks, "I wouldn't be good at my job if I did,"
She rolls her eyes at him.
Taehyung lifts his glass, his smile returning to his face.
"To taking down criminals," He clears his throat, "Legally or not,"
Hoseok and Jimin look at each other before shrugging, lifting their glasses so they all clink together. They cheer, downing their drinks quickly. Luna pours them all more, changing the subject.
They talk about a new drama that came out recently and a few other pop culture topics. Eventually, Jimin asks the one question that she always hates, especially from him.
"So, how are you two going?" Jimin grins wickedly, "How's the relationship... progressing?"
Luna rolls her eyes as Taehyung chuckles, quickly noticing her reddening cheeks.
"We are fine... thank you," Luna snaps.
"Are you guys ever gonna fuck?" Hoseok says abruptly, making Taehyung choke on his drink. Jimin laughs loudly, patting his back. Luna glares at Hoseok, daring him to say it again.
"Okay, I'm sorry," Hoseok grins, "None of my business,"
"We have! We do!" Taehyung declares loudly, hiccupping a little. His cheeks are red with a mixture of embarrassment and defiance.
Hoseok's eyes widen as he looks between them, his grin slowly growing bigger.
"Seriously?" Hoseok asks Luna. She rolls her eyes and nods curtly.
Suddenly, Hoseok jumps up and cheers, quickly pulling Luna in for a hug.
"Congratulations!" He cheers, "Only took 5 years,"
"Oh, shut up," Luna smirks, pushing him away. He stumbles, watching as Taehyung buries his face in his hands so they can only see his red ears.
"I'm sorry," His muffled voice groans, "I shouldn't have..."
"It's fine Tae," Luna laughs, "These two are my best friends, it's fine,"
He lowers his hands, making eye contact with Jimin. Jimin is grinning proudly, but he looks like he's on the verge of speech. Based on the alcohol in his system, and his darting eyes, Luna has a feeling he is going to bring up their relationship and ask something along the lines of comparison.
"Anyway," Luna says quickly, halting his thought process, "Let's talk about something else,"
They talk about a few more things involving their work and The Eye, but nothing too in-depth. She reiterates that she will arrest them if anything that leads Yoongi straight to them arrives on her desk. She gives Hoseok a pointed look at this, considering the grotesque murders she needs to investigate. He nods in understanding, shrugging with confidence. Hoseok doesn't leave behind evidence. There is a reason he has only been known as J Hope this whole time. No one knows who he is, and no one has traced him to anything.
After a while, they are all drunk enough to end the enjoyable night, heading home with some new information and more questions.
. . . . .
A week later...
"All right, it has been over a month now since I partnered you two on this case," Seokjin sighs, pacing behind his desk anxiously, "Please tell me you have some good news,"
Yoongi and Luna sit across from Seokjin, looking both excited yet grim. It is Friday and they need to give Seokjin their weekly summary.
"Well, there is good news and bad news," Yoongi sighs.
"What's the good news?" Seokjin demands, finally sitting at his desk, leaning forward with a strained expression.
"The good news is we think we have narrowed down where The Eye is working from," Yoongi says proudly.
Seokjin cocks his eyebrow, looking smug and proud.
"Good work," He smirks, "What's the bad news?"
"The bad news is that we don't have enough proof for a warrant, and the house's records are false," Luna explains.
Seokjin frowns, holding his hand out expectantly. Luna passes him a file containing all the information about this house.
As he skims through the document, his eyes narrow more and more, as if he is trying to will the written words into being, begging them to reveal the truth.
"What led you to this conclusion?" Seokjin asks, passing the file to Yoongi.
"Firstly," Yoongi glances at Luna, "Our anonymous informant has been deciphering the coded messages we have found, one of them leading to this location. Secondly, every single suspect from the Gyong drug bust had this address in their location history. When we checked out the place, we saw a government car drive into the garage. This also means we have found one of The Eye's workers in the police force. Lastly, one of the suspects we interviewed entered this establishment, and he confirmed that he works for The Eye,"
"But...?" Seokjin frowns.
"But that's not good enough for the courts," Luna sighs, "We are certain this is the place,"
Seokjin observes them for a moment, nodding as he contemplates this conundrum. He glances at his computer, his frown deepening as he becomes lost in thought. Just as Luna starts to wonder if she should pull him from this, he returns his attention to them, nodding even more vigorously.
"Okay, monitor the house closely," Seokjin says firmly, "As soon as you confirm any visuals of weapons or criminal activity, we can bypass the need for a warrant,"
"Who should we ask to watch the house?" Luna asks nervously, "And, wouldn't a stationary car out the front of their house warn them?"
Seokjin sighs, considering this new problem.
"Send Officer Choi and Officer Lee," Seokjin says firmly, "I have already done their investigations and I trust them. Tell them to go in one of their personal cars and park down in front of the little store, out of uniform,"
Yoongi nods in agreement, frowning slightly.
"Sounds good," Luna stands and bows. Yoongi follows her, bowing deeply in silence.
"Thank you for the report," Seokjin smiles, "Looks like we are closing in. My boss will be very happy with this news,"
"Of course," Luna chuckles.
They bow again and leave his office. As they make their way through the office and down the elevator, Luna begins to notice Yoongi's brooding tension. He is silent, deathly silent, the entire way, skimming through the file they showed Seokjin.
"Yoongi?" Luna frowns, halting him as they exit the front doors, "Are you okay?"
Yoongi frowns, lifting his gaze to Luna. His eyes are quivering, as if he has just had a huge revelation. He closes the file and slides it into his jacket.
"Yoongi, what are you thinking about?" She demands. He sighs deeply, before looking away from her.
"Don't worry, it's probably nothing," Yoongi says firmly.
"It's not nothing if you're thinking about it so much," Luna retorts, "Tell me,"
"We'll talk tomorrow, okay?" Yoongi says quietly, starting down the stairs towards Taehyung. Luna follows him, feeling apprehensive. She doesn't like that she didn't pick up on whatever he noticed. Did they miss something in the report? Was it Officer Choi and Lee?
When they reach the bottom, Yoongi stops and turns to her.
"I want you to do something, but you can't question it, okay?" He says quickly, lowering his head.
"Okay," She whispers.
"I want you to get a burner phone," He mutters, "Then, meet me at my house on Saturday,"
"Okay," Luna mumbles, "Are you getting one too?"
"Of course," He mutters, "When you visit, don't bring your phone, and don't notify Taehyung where you're going,"
"Yoongi..." Luna sighs, "How can you trust me and not him?"
"I'll explain later, please?" Yoongi whispers angrily, glancing towards Taehyung as he starts walking towards them, a crease of concern on his face.
"Fine," Luna mutters as Taehyung reaches them, looking between them.
"Are you two okay?" Taehyung asks, raising his eyebrows.
"Yeah," Luna smiles and nods at him before looking back at Yoongi, "I'll see you Monday?"
"Yeah," Yoongi smiles before giving Taehyung a little wave and walking towards his car.
Taehyung watches him go, still worried about the whole whispered conversation they had.
"What was all that about?" Taehyung asks as they start walking towards his car.
Luna looks up at him and sighs. She has no idea why Yoongi is suddenly worried about Taehyung. But she promised him. Taehyung will understand.
"He's just stressing about this case," Luna explains, "Mr Kim Seokjin is rubbing off on him,"
"Fair enough," Taehyung chuckles as they reach his car and get in, heading to his house for the night. His hand rests comfortably on her thigh, a small smirk playing on his lips. She ignores the burning sensation that spreads from his touch, her mind wandering to Yoongi.
She has no idea what he picked up on, and what it has to do with Taehyung. But she trusts Yoongi. She is 100% certain that Yoongi isn't the leak, he wouldn't work for The Eye if they threatened him to. He would look down the barrel of the gun and grin, ready to take the bullet.
So, if he says she needs to buy a burner phone and meet up with him, she's going to do what he says.
(A/N) Hey, my life has become a little complicated recently. I'll try to not miss a day, but if I do, don't worry too much. I'll finish this, no matter what.
See ya tomorrow 🫰🫰🫰
