Chapter 30

Luna and Taehyung walk into the police station together, heading to the elevator. Once they are in the elevator, Taehyung slides his hand into hers, giving it a little squeeze of reassurance.

He has no idea why she is so stressed today, but he hopes to comfort her.

Luna is stressing about trying to convince Yoongi to let Taehyung join in the investigation. He will have an insight into the legal systems and procedures that Luna and Yoongi don't have. She also doesn't like hiding things from him.

The elevator stops and she steps out, pausing to smile and wave at him. He blows her a kiss as the doors close between them. She giggles at his playfulness and heads to her desk, ready for the busy day she is going to have.

She still has all two open cases to work on, one of which is the unsolvable murder. She just simply hopes Yoongi has spoken to Seokjin, so he doesn't pass her any more cases, and Yoongi understands her need to finish these before working with him in the mafia task force.

"Briefing," Mr Lee calls out, gesturing to the meeting room.

Luna heads straight there and sits in her usual seat. Yoongi slides in beside her, looking stressed and grim. She can't ask him what's going on, but she is sure it has something to do with The Eye.

"Settle down," Seokjin calls out as he enters, grabbing everyone's attention.

He goes through the usual spiel of events and community organisations before starting on the cases. He does not pass one to Luna, but he does assign another case to Yoongi.

Once he is finished, he dismisses the room, waiting patiently at the podium, his eyes on Luna.

She gulps, waiting for her reprimanding.

She was meant to start her anger management class yesterday, but she forgot all about it when she was working with Yoongi. Is she going to lose her job?

"Detective Lee Luna," Seokjin annunciates as she reaches him, "My office, now,"

"Yes sir," Luna mumbles, glancing at Yoongi. He gives her a small smile of reassurance, watching her as she follows Seokjin out of the meeting room and to his office.

She stands solemnly in his office, waiting as he moves around his desk, sits down, and gets comfortable. After a brief moment, he gestures for her to sit. She does as she is told, her head hung in shame.

"Lee Luna, your anger management course started yesterday," He mutters, "It's mandated you know, not optional,"

"I'm really sorry, Mr Kim," Luna mumbles, not looking up, "I was with Yoongi, and I lost track of time... I still have my other cases and he has..."

"Luna," He sighs, "Look at me,"

Slowly, she raises her head to look at him. Instead of anger, or disappointment, she finds humour in his expression. She frowns as he starts laughing.

"It's okay, I told Yoongi to seek you for support in his task force," Seokjin grins, "I already cancelled your anger management course, which is why they didn't call you,"

"Ah, I see," Luna shuffles uncomfortably, "Then... why...?"

She wants to ask why he has led her to believe she is in trouble, but she doesn't want to wipe the smile from his face.

"Just teasing," He chuckles, "I want to talk to you about the task force,"

"Oh, okay," Luna sits up straighter.

"Firstly, this task force is completely confidential," He begins, "If I find out you have passed any information onto someone who is not in the task force, I will fire you on the spot, understood?"

"Of course, sir," Luna smiles, "I understand,"

He pauses, watching her seriously as if interrogating her with his eyes. Her cheeks start to heat up, uncomfortable from all the staring.

"Secondly," He continues, "All of your other cases will be reassigned, and your sole focus will be this investigation. All new information is to be reported to me, and any new leads or suspects need to be run by me. My higher-ups are breathing down my neck about this increase in gang violence, so I need to see progress, understood?"

"Yes, sir," Luna nods, "So, I can't continue my cases...?"

"No," He says firmly, "I need you to focus on this investigation,"

"Understood," She sighs sadly. She really did want to find the killer for the dead-end case.

"Yoongi gives me summaries at the end of each week," Seokjin smiles, "So I want you to be involved with that from now on, okay?"

"Yes, sir," She mutters.

"Any questions?" He asks.

"So... it's just me and Yoongi now?" She asks.

"Yes, I have delegated the other officers to different things," Seokjin confirms, "I don't know who our leak was, so I'm not taking any chances,"

"That's fair," Luna smiles.

Lucky Yoongi didn't tell Seokjin about her past. He would automatically assume she was the mole inside the station.

"All of the staff in this location will be investigated," Seokjin smirks, "Including you and Yoongi, understood?"

"Yes, sir," She replies blankly.

Hoseok better fix my documentation by then.

"Anything else?" He tilts his head, smiling kindly at her.

"I uh... have a staffing suggestion," Luna shuffles uncomfortably, "Kim Taehyung,"

"Kim Taehyung? Why?" Seokjin frowns.

"I know him really well... he would want to be involved in this and he will be a great asset to the task force," Luna explains.

Please... please let me tell him...

"Kim Taehyung," Seokjin sighs, "I'll investigate him... he was in America after all... but if you trust him, I trust him,"

"Thank you, sir," Luna grins, bowing deeply in her chair.

"Run it by Yoongi first," Seokjin says quickly, "His decision will be the final decision,"

"Yes, sir," Luna agrees.

"That's all?" He asks.

"Yes, sir," She stands up, bowing again, "Thank you,"

"All right, get to work," He grins, gesturing to his office door with his chin.

. . . . .

"Absolutely not," Yoongi says firmly, looking up from the new case on the table.

"Why?" Luna frowns, "He will be helpful,"

"We can't trust anyone here, not even your boyfriend," He smirks.

"He's not just my boyfriend..." Luna snaps, sitting in the seat across from him, "He will be really helpful,"

Yoongi sighs deeply, placing the case down on the desk and looking up at her sternly. He leans back in his seat, crossing his legs as he folds his arms. He looks like a teacher who is about to scold her for not doing her homework. This thought makes her snicker.

Knowing that she is obviously making fun of him, his frown deepens.

"Are you sure you're not asking so you don't have to keep secrets from your boyfriend, Detective Lee?" He smirks.

"No," Luna snaps, "I am asking because if he was part of The Eye, he would have killed me 5 years ago,"

Yoongi scuttles in his seat, moving closer to the desk so he can lean on it.

"Explain,"

Luna proceeds to tell Yoongi how she met Taehyung and what he knows about her. She even hints that he might know more than Yoongi does. She also, as she becomes more nervous, accidentally spills the details of their relationship.

After her explanation, Yoongi looks mollified.

"So, Taehyung knows Faith," He scoffs, "All right, go get him,"

"Thank you," Luna grins, jumping up from her seat and rushing from the room, barely registering Yoongi's knowing chuckle.

She locks the door behind her and heads up to the persecutor's level, going straight to Taehyung's office. Once she reaches it, she finds Taehyung on the phone, looking agitated.

"Yeah, yeah, I understand," He gestures for her to sit down, "What I don't understand is why I wasn't notified..."

Luna frowns, watching him become more and more frustrated as she takes the seat in front of him.

"I'm sorry, what?" He lifts his gaze to Luna, his eyes narrowed, "Speak of the devil... I gotta go, thank you," He hangs up, clenching his hands together in front of him on the desk.

"Good morning, Prosecutor Kim Taehyung," She smiles.

She has a feeling that Taehyung has received the same thing Luna did. His cases have been passed on to someone else.

"Good morning, Detective Luna," He says coldly, "Do you mind explaining to me why another prosecutor has all of my jobs and only your name as my reason?"

"Uh... well... if you follow me, I can explain everything," Luna smiles, standing up.

"Uh ah," Taehyung tsks, shaking his finger at her, "You'll explain here,"

She cocks her eyebrow at him, completely stunned by his attitude towards her.

"It's about faith, Mr Kim Taehyung," Luna mutters darkly, "Do you have any faith in me?"

His expression shifts, paling slightly at the mention of her old name. He understands completely.

"All right, lead the way," He responds quietly, standing up from his desk. He follows her out of the room and down to the detective's floor, straight to the office Luna shares with Yoongi. She unlocks the door and leads him in.

Taehyung looks around the small room in confusion, his eyes glancing over all of the documents on the desk. Eventually, he spots Yoongi, leaning back in his chair with his feet on the only empty corner of the desk, a file in his hands.

"Oh, hello. Taehyung, right?" Yoongi grins, "I'm Min Yoongi, leader of the mafia task force,"

He lifts his arms up as if gesturing around at a magnificent area. Taehyung snorts, turning to look at Luna. She closes and locks the office door, moving towards one of the seats.

"All right, firstly," She sighs, gesturing for Taehyung to sit beside her, "I know I mentioned that you have to have faith in me, but faith is not mentioned in this room, is that clear?"

Taehyung nervously sits beside her in the only other chair available. He nods, giving Yoongi a quick glance.

"It's okay," Yoongi smirks, "I have faith too,"

Taehyung frowns, struggling to keep up with all the little code words and subliminal messages occurring here.

"Wait... you know?" Taehyung asks.

"Yes, I confronted her after investigating her history," Yoongi nods, "And I'm sure killing me is not off the table?"

"It's never off the table with you," Luna smirks playfully.

Taehyung looks between them, torn between concern and confusion.

"Wait, so that friend of Hoseo..."

"ANYWAY!" Luna says loudly, talking over Taehyung as she places her hand on his mouth so he can't continue, "I'm going to go have lunch with Taehyung and brief him on the task force, how does that sound?"

Yoongi looks from Luna to Taehyung, easily putting the pieces together. After a moment, he shrugs.

"Sure, grab me a coffee on your way back," he says, returning his attention to the folder.

"Great," Luna chuckles, practically dragging Taehyung from the room.

"Hey, that was..."

"Sshh, we'll talk outside," Luna snaps. She's not angry at him but at herself. She should have told him what was happening before bringing him in to speak to Yoongi.

They head to the café, grab some lunch, and a coffee for Yoongi, before moving into the spot in the parking lot Yoongi and Luna spoke at yesterday.

Taehyung sits down, grumbling as they consume their lunch. Once they're finished, Luna speaks.

"All right," She sighs, "So, this task force is for..."

"Hold on, I want to know why I got into trouble," Taehyung snaps.

"Because you were about to name-drop Hoseok," Luna says firmly, "The notorious arms dealer in Korea? Yoongi has an entire section dedicated to him!"

"What happened to 'If I catch them, I catch them'?" Taehyung retorts, "Because it sounds like you're covering for them,"

"No, if I physically catch them," Luna corrects, "Plus, Hoseok isn't the main issue here, it's The Eye,"

"What does Hoseok have to do with The Eye?"

"Nothing," Luna groans with frustration, "That's the point. I'm not going to go out of my way to arrest the only two men I have on the inside. I already corrected Yoongi on Hoseok's affiliations, so he is not important,"

"Okay... so what's this task force?" Taehyung mumbles, his anger depleting.

"This task force was created to help curb the increase in mafia activity in Korea," Luna explains, "They had Yoongi on it with a group of officers, but then his informant got killed for revealing that The Eye has people in the police force. So now, it's just Yoongi and me. I recommended you join us because I trust that you're not working for The Eye, and you're the only person with law experience I can trust right now,"

"Okay," Taehyung nods along, listening intently.

"A lot of mafia members and gang-related crimes have been directly linked to The Eye," Luna continues, "So it's not The Reapers who are causing a disturbance here. The reason I spoke to Jimin and Hoseok on my own the other day was that I needed to alert them to this and have them contact RM about it. I wasn't sure if I wanted to involve you until this morning,"

"I see," Taehyung mumbles, "So, I'm part of the task force now?"

"Yes, that's correct," Luna nods.

"And Yoongi doesn't know about Jimin, and doesn't know you personally know Hoseok?"

"Exactly," Luna smiles, "And I'd like to keep it that way,"

"What about your documentation?" Taehyung's eyes widen with concern, "What if another detective looks into you?"

"Hoseok is already dealing with that," Luna smiles, "By the time Seokjin investigates me, I should have a proper history,"

"I hope so," Taehyung sighs.

He shuffles closer to her, placing his arm on her shoulders and pulling her into his side. She pouts a little, but comfortably rests her head into the crook of his neck.

"I worry about you," He mumbles, "Please be careful,"

"Well, with you joining you'll be able to keep an eye on me," She grins, looking up at him mischievously.

"Not that you need it," He purrs, nuzzling into the side of her head. She giggles at the sensation, enjoying this brief moment of comfort.

And I can keep an eye on you.

After a while, they pull apart and head inside, their fingers entwined openly between them.

. . . . .

"You took your time," Yoongi mutters as they enter the small office.

"Sorry," Luna grins, "Here's your coffee,"

He takes the drink, looking at Luna in disgust.

"You know," He looks at Taehyung, "Ever since you arrived, she has been smiling and nice,"

Taehyung laughs, cocking his eyebrow at Luna.

"That sounds about right," He smirks. Luna rolls her eyes, hitting his arm gently.

"Urgh, stop it," Yoongi rolls his eyes, "I assume Luna told you everything?"

"Yep," Taehyung nods, "Well, she filled me in on everything I didn't already know,"

"Fair," Yoongi nods, "Well, you can deal with this stuff,"

Yoongi slides a pile of court transcripts and documentation towards Taehyung.

"And you can deal with this,"

He slides a pile of gang-related cases that have occurred over the past month in the entire city towards Luna.

"Let's begin," Yoongi grins, enjoying the disgruntled groans from Taehyung and Luna.

After a few hours, they begin to feel cross-eyed looking at paragraph after paragraph. So, Yoongi suggests a bit of brainstorming.

Yoongi has gone to collect the completed summary of the investigation of the staff. Luna and Taehyung help him look through it, trying to find any hint or suggestion that Luna recognises from her past, or that Taehyung recognises from his experience.

But there is nothing. So far, all of the police officers and admin staff are clear. Well, their history is clear of any suspicious activity. Which doesn't mean much but does narrow it down a little.

Their last job of the day is to interview the family of a recent death. But the victim's family and the witnesses do not help narrow down the culprit. None of them recognised the name The Eye, none of them knew of the victim's criminal life, and their house was clean – too clean. Which has led them back to square one.

But Yoongi is confident. He has come further in the past 2 days than he has in the past couple of months. That's progress.
