Chapter 28

"Using Jimin?" He mutters, "Literally?"

"Well, I explained what was suggested to me, and he was fine with it," Luna shrugs.

"Oh yeah, I'm sure he was more than fine with that," Taehyung scoffs.

"Dude, I didn't want to go into the details of my sex life," Luna snaps, "You asked, I answered,"

Taehyung stares at the TV for a moment, taking a big deep breath in as he closes his eyes. She watches him warily, waiting for the impending argument, just like before. They used to always fight about everything, but it all started with jealousy. Is that just how it's always going to be with them?

"That's fair," He mumbles gruffly. He shuffles so he is facing her, crossing his legs. She starts to get DeJa'Vu as this scene reminds her of the many conversations they had together. But this feels different.

"You're right," He starts, "I got exactly what I was asking for. I have no right to be jealous of your previous relationship, even if it was with Jimin... I'm sorry,"

She stares at him for a moment, waiting for the other shoe to drop. It can't be that simple, can it? Is he really apologising this easily? Has he really matured this much?

Have I matured?

"It's okay," She replies awkwardly, "I didn't want to bring it up... but I'm glad you asked about my trauma,"

"I don't have any delusions of being the knight in shining Armor that saves you from that, or being the only person in your life," Taehyung continues, "I lost that right when I left. Maybe it was a good thing, maybe it wasn't our time, I don't know,"

"It's okay... if it makes you feel better, I don't want to know your history either," She chuckles. He smiles, reaching forward and grabbing her hand. The electric pulse of longing travels up her arm from his touch as he runs his thumb along her knuckles, just like he used to.

"You're not good at conversations like this, are you?" He smirks.

"Nope, I'm as emotionally detached as I have always been," she replies. He laughs at her response, but his gaze is fixed firmly on their hands as if he is also lost in the sensation.

"I am going to be completely honest then," He lifts his eyes to hers, "We both still like each other, that much is obvious. So do you want to try again?"

She starts to become lost in his eyes, firm and certain as he waits for her reply. She wants to say yes so desperately, but she can't. Sure, they have changed as people. He has matured in every possible way, and she is more in touch with herself and others, albeit awkwardly. They have changed, but the past hasn't changed. She is still a threat to him.

"But... my past..." Luna bites her lip, looking away from him, "I'm still a target, Taehyung,"

"I know," He taps under her chin so she looks up at him, "But you're a detective and I'm a prosecutor. I can look after myself and so can you. I'm willing to risk it,"

"I'm not sure Taehyung," She pauses, frowning as she tries to find the right words.

If they're going to have a nice deep and meaningful conversation, she might as well be honest and open up, right?

"I am terrified of experiencing what happened in the hospital again," Luna says truthfully, "I'm scared you're going to receive a terrifying reminder of what it means to be with me and break it off like you did,"

Taehyung nods along to her explanation.

"That's fair, I understand your fear of that..." He teeters on the edge of speech before finally speaking, "Can I tell you something?"

"Sure..." Luna frowns.

"When you told me I broke that promise, that stuck with me," He admits, "It's changed me, a lot more than I was expecting it to. That day in the airport I made a promise to return to you, and I thought about it every day,"

The sincerity in his eyes is intoxicating. Has he really been thinking about that this whole time? Does he truly remember the time they spent together as much as she does?

"Really?" She croaks, feeling her emotions rise into her throat.

"Yeah," He grins, "The real reason I broke it off with that girl was because it felt wrong. I couldn't wait to come back to you. The day I broke up with her, I messaged Jimin and asked him to tell you that I wanted to speak to you,"

"Yeah... I changed my number," Luna blushes, "Not because of you, but it was one of the factors,"

"I thought so," He chuckles, "But he said that you refuse to speak about me, so I just left it. All I could do was hope that when I return, you're single. I never imagined we'd work at the same place,"

She bites the inside her of lip as it quivers, barely holding back the torrent of tears of relief that want to burst through. Why is she so emotional right now?

"So, what do you say?" He asks softly, grasping her wrist and gently tugging her towards him, "Want to try again?"

She allows him to pull her forwards, right into his arms as he slowly falls back onto the bed. She burrows into the crook of his shoulder, wrapping her arms around his middle as he lets her hands go. She nods, already feeling the excitement in him. As he engulfs her, pushing her closer into his side, she relaxes. This was a big mistake.

As soon as her muscles loosen, so does her resolve. All the tears she was holding back come flooding out like a tidal wave of relief.

Taehyung immediately panics, lifting her up into a seated position. She hangs her head in shame, trying to force the tears to stop. But just like her therapist used to say: when you hold them back, once they start, they won't stop. Like an embarrassing faucet.

He holds her up by her shoulders, trying to look at her face.

"Luna? Are you okay? What's wrong?" He begs. She continues to sob, trying to explain the comfort and relief, but all she expresses are a bunch of garbled noises.

He sighs and pulls her into his chest, gently rubbing her back soothingly.

"I think I understand," He laughs, "It's okay..."

He continues to whisper words of comfort and safety as they slowly return to laying down on the bed, his arm under her head as she clings to his side like a terrified baby koala.

After she has calmed down, she explains herself, and he laughs again. Usually, she has headaches after crying, but as she relaxes into his embrace, she can only feel one thing: Relief. A few comments about emotional regulation and allowing herself to 'feel' later and she's asleep in his arms.

. . . . .

"Good morning, grumpy," Luna says cheerfully as she reaches her desk, beaming at a disgruntled Yoongi. He glances up at her, his eyes narrowing as he takes in her bubbly attitude.

"You're happy. Why?" He asks emotionlessly.

"Taehyung," She grins, "He stayed over, and he asked me out,"

She knows it is a little cruel to be so blunt, considering Yoongi's feelings. She is hoping that this little detail will help pull Yoongi from his jealousy, but it doesn't. He doesn't react at all, just watches her passively.

Before she can ask him anything else, and before he can really reply, Seokjin calls for the morning briefing.

The meeting is as uneventful as usual. She receives another case, and Yoongi doesn't receive any.

After dismissing the room, Seokjin asks Yoongi to see him in his office. They both look grim and uncomfortable, which is concerning in itself. But Luna doesn't have time to think about it. She has work to do.

She closes her other two cases, passing on all the evidence and information to Taehyung and another prosecutor for court next week. This leaves her frowning over her new case.

A bloody crime scene, no evidence, no witnesses, and no clue as to who it could be. She has a small list of suspects that might want to hurt the victim, but after a brief meeting with them, she has determined that they all have solid alibis. Her last option is that it was a random attack. With no nearby CCTV, she has nothing. This one is going to take a while.

The lab has a partial print they are running, but all she can do in the meantime is skim through what she has, staring intently at the available information.

"Hey,"

Luna jumps as someone taps her shoulder, pulling her from her spiralling. Yoongi looks down at her, his expression blank.

"Hey, what's up?" She asks, yawning as she stretches her back.

"Lunch?" He asks.

"Sure," She frowns. As she starts to take in his presence, she starts to realise he is tense. Really tense.

Ah, is he going to confess?

Luna hasn't seen Yoongi since his meeting with Seokjin, even in passing. He hasn't been at his desk all morning. What has he been doing?

Tentatively, she stands up and follows him out of the building, heading to the little café they always go to.

They grab some food and Luna goes to eat at their usual table. But Yoongi begins walking out of the café. She frowns and follows him silently. He isn't speaking to her or looking at her.

Once they reach the car park of the police station, he stops and looks around. He moves into a more isolated section of the car park before sitting down on the curb and opening his lunch. She follows him, sitting beside him and eating.

Once they are finished, he sighs and collects the rubbish, putting it aside. He is gazing off into the distance, his brow furrowed in concentration. She has never been more nervous about a conversation in her life, including the last one she had with Namjoon.

"I got a new case," Yoongi begins tonelessly.

"Okay?" Luna frowns, "Are you having a hard time with it?"

This doesn't sound like a confession.

"Yeah, I am," He sighs, turning to look at her. His eyes dart between hers, searching for something.

"What can I help with?" Luna asks, "Is it triggering or something?"

The only thing she can think of is he has come across a case that is reminding him of something he doesn't want to think about. A few detectives have had moments like this where they pass a case to another detective.

"No..." Yoongi replies, "It has been confronting, sure, but I was hoping you could help me out with something,"

"Anything," Luna chuckles, "You know you can come to me with these things,"

She nudges his shoulder, but he still looks disconnected. Obviously, she was very wrong about him being jealous. Unless this new case is his feelings, which would make all this incredibly cheesy. Yoongi doesn't look like the type of guy to do those sorts of things.

Or is he?

"Luna..." He clears his throat, "Have you heard the name Faith before?"

Luna immediately pales, but at least manages to wipe her face of any reaction before she becomes too obvious. She was not expecting him to ask such a question, and now she's worried he knows something.

"No," Luna replies, "Why?"

"The main suspect for my case mentioned the name," He replies, "He said that he's looking for her,"

"Oh?" Luna says, "Is she a victim or something?"

She is already aware of people looking for her, so this news doesn't surprise her.

He continues to watch her, that emotion she couldn't identify before becoming much clearer. He is interrogating her.

"Apparently, she was an assassin," Yoongi explains, "My suspect confirmed that he is part of a mafia group, but I'm not sure if she was part of the same group or if she was part of another one,"

Luna chuckles, trying to clear the air, and her name, of any tension.

"Why would you ask me if I know her?" She asks ludicrously, "Is she connected to one of my cases?"

His eyebrow twitches reflexively, indicating that he doesn't believe a word she is saying.

He knows something.

He's found something.

She is fucked.

"Well, it doesn't matter anymore. He was killed last night," Yoongi continues, "The crime scene was perfect, definitely professional,"

"I see," Luna nods, "Are you having a hard time finding her?"

"Well, I have a suspect," Yoongi smirks, "You,"

Fuck.

Am I going to have to kill him?

"Why me?" Luna chuckles, "What do I have to do with this?"

Yoongi pulls a folder out of the inner pocket of his jacket, his eyes firmly on hers. He passes it to her.

She opens it to find it is entirely dedicated to her. It doesn't have a lot of information in it, but that's just as bad.

"Do you want to know what's missing from this, Luna?" Yoongi mutters.

"What?" She replies.

"Any existence of you before the age of 20," Yoongi explains, "There is a list of childhood documentation, but all of it is false,"

Remind me to never get new ID from Hoseok's friend.

Luna remains expressionless, trying to figure out what to do. She knows what he is suggesting, but she's not sure what she should do about it. She needs to find a way to get out of this situation and ensure he doesn't suspect her. She really doesn't want to kill him.

What if he's already told Seokjin?

No. If he had, she wouldn't be sitting here with him. She would be in a cell, awaiting a court date. Not that they can pin anything on her. She would be extradited to America.

Slowly, a plan comes together. She just needs to convince him, right?

"Okay, can I tell you the truth?" Luna whispers. Yoongi frowns and shuffles closer.

"Please," He mutters.

"I am part of a witness protection program for helping take down..."

"No, try again," He interrupts.

"You wouldn't know," Luna frowns.

"It was the first thing I checked," He smiles, "Just tell me the truth,"

"You don't have access to federal databases," Luna snaps, starting to panic a little.

"No, but I have friends in high places," Yoongi shrugs, "Tell me the truth, Luna,"

Luna sighs. Yoongi is too good of a detective. The only reason he's asking her is because he is certain. She can't lie to him. Now she needs to figure out how much he knows.

"I think you already know," She murmurs, looking up at him blankly, "Who have you told?"

"No one," He says firmly, "Faith has no identity or DNA. Even if you were to confess on record, I'd have nothing,"

"Then why are you confronting me like this?" Luna mutters darkly, "You know my name, so you know what I'm capable of,"

"Because I want you to help me," Yoongi replies. She blinks a few times before responding.

"Help you? With what?" She frowns.

"Firstly, I want your story," Yoongi says firmly, "I need to confirm something. And don't lie or leave any details out. I will know. I want to know everything,"

Luna sighs and begins explaining her entire life story, as far as she can remember. Everything from her trauma to the training she received, to her first kill. She then explains why she ran from America and started a new life and everything that has happened since. She even includes details about Namjoon and Jungkook, excluding their real names. She doesn't mention Jimin and Hoseok by name and just calls them her old friends.

"And that's it really," Luna shrugs, "I came here to start again... I didn't want to do it anymore,"

Yoongi listens to her intently, resting his chin on his hand as he watches her. He doesn't say anything for a moment, taking in her explanation.

"So, The Reapers had a huge hierarchy reshuffle?" He asks.

"Yeah, my brother is in charge," She explains, "I don't know what he does, and I've told him that I don't care to know,"

"And you have no connection to The Eye?" Yoongi confirms.

"After everything I just said?" Luna snaps, "No, never. I'd rather die,"

"That's fair," He nods a few times before sighing loudly, "All right, I believe you,"

"You... you do?" She frowns, "Why?"

"Because I might not know Faith, but I know Luna... Luna isn't a false mask covering a monster. She is a flawed, traumatised human trying to survive," He gives her a small smile, "And that's why I'm confronting you instead of reporting you. Because I know you,"

Her eyes widen in shock as she tries to blink away the tears that have started to form.

Goddamn it not this crying bullshit again.

"Thank you," She mutters gruffly, taking a few deep breaths to push away the tears, "Anyway, what do you need my help with?"

"Ah, yes," He pulls out another folder, "Let me show you what I've got so far,"

Damn, how big are his pockets?

"My suspect confided in me off the record, intentionally," He says quickly, "He confirmed that he was working for The Eye and that he has people working in the police force,"

"What? Seriously?" Luna's stomach drops at the thought. Who could it be? How many are there?

"Yeah, but that's not all," Yoongi says grimly, "I think me repeating that is why he is dead,"

"Who did you tell?" Luna asks quickly.

"Well, Seokjin formed a small group to start curbing the increase in gang violence. We only learnt the names of these mafia groups a few months ago, but he wanted me to have some help," Yoongi explains, "But it was me and 10 others. It could be any of them, or they could have simply told another officer or a detective... or it could be one of the admin staff... it could be anyone,"

"That's true," Luna sighs, "So you're coming to me so we can start a separate investigation?"

"Exactly," Yoongi says with elation, "I spoke to Seokjin about doing it alone after we got the news, and he told me to seek you so that he can have the best detectives on this. He doesn't know anything about my investigation of you,"

"That's good," Luna sighs, looking down at the folder, "But some of this information on The Eye and The Reapers is incorrect,"

"All right... I have a little office I have been using, let's go there," Yoongi says quickly, standing up.

"Are there cameras in there?" Luna asks uncertainly, standing up with him.

"None at all, obviously," Yoongi smirks, "Locked at all times, no surveillance, completely hidden,"

"Let's not mention my old name though," Luna says firmly as they start walking towards the building, "Just in case,"

"Fair," Yoongi murmurs, "We will come up with a fake criminal for any information you provide,"

"Perfect," Luna grins.

They head inside, Luna feeling strangely light considering. Now all of her friends know her dirty little secret.

(A/N) Are my chapters getting too long? I'm not sure anymore.
