009. CHAPTER NINE!
CHAPTER NINE !
TOO WEIRD TO LIVE, TOO RARE TO DIE
————✩ ————
ASTRID HADN'T THOUGHT SHE WOULD BE GOING TO ANOTHER PARTY so little time after the rave. Nevertheless, here she was, debating over which outfit to wear to Lydia's birthday party.
She had considered not going but after all that had happened, Lydia seemed to be the only person -apart from Lukas of course- who hadn't lied or deceived her one way or another. She was also the only person from the pack with whom she didn't always get side glances every now and then, worrying she'll turn into a vampire and kill everyone on sight. It probably helped that Lydia herself wasn't even on the whole supernatural ordeal, no matter how involved she actually was.
Spring break was right around the corner too. Astrid still didn't know what she was going to do, though. She still wondered whether she would be going back to Mystic Falls, the town she was avoiding most of all, to see her family. She was still worried about Kol not answering her texts and she wanted to see him. So, she thought that if Klaus had decided to stake him after all, maybe she could coax him into releasing Kol. She had to admit she also was a little curious about the apparent cure for vampirism.
Finally satisfied with an outfit, Astrid took one last look in the mirror before grabbing a jacket and leaving her room. Lukas was going to the party too but they had agreed to meet up there this time. Apparently, Lydia's birthday party was always a big event where you could find pretty much the whole school. This year, however, Lukas admitted that people seemed less inclined to go. Probably due to Lydia's little trip in the forest not so long ago. It was funny how people were always so quick to turn their back on someone for the smallest thing after taking advantage of them for so long.
Knowing that Scott, Stiles, and Allison would probably be going too, Astrid had thought of going with Scott as they lived close to each other but they still weren't exactly on good terms. Things had seemed to change a little after the rave when Astrid had helped the others with Jackson, but the pack was still wary of her, it seemed.
Not really wanting to wander around alone on a full moon -she didn't want to have hallucinations and feel sick because of accidentally getting bitten- Astrid had got her fake mother Lana to drop her off. She knew how to drive but still didn't have a car at her disposition. She should maybe get around to solving that soon, she thought.
When she arrived in front of Lydia's door, she was greeted by the birthday girl, herself, in a low-cut grey dress. "Astrid, you came! Come in, it's nice to see you," Lydia told Astrid, unknowingly inviting the vampire in. Astrid smiled at Lydia and followed her inside after wishing her a happy birthday. Once inside, though, she was surprised to find the living room nearly empty. Wasn't this supposed to be the party of the month? It's not like she was early or anything.
"Come! You need to taste the punch," Lydia told her while practically shoving a round glass in her hands. Was Astrid dreaming or did Lydia seem particularly fake tonight? She still took the glass and took a sip, seeing how Lydia was looking at her pointedly.
"Hm, it's very good, thanks!" she told her, forcing herself a little to be nice, which earned a smile from Lydia.
"Great! Take as much as you want, happy you could make it!" Lydia told her one last time before leaving to go see other people.
Left alone with some punch, Astrid took another sip before scanning the room. She had to admit the punch tasted good at least. She took her phone out and saw that she had gotten no new notifications since she had left the house, meaning Lukas probably wasn't there yet. When she looked up, she locked eyes with Scott, talking with Stiles on the other side of the room.
Surprisingly, Scott gave her a shy smile, to which she answered with a wave, glad to see he wasn't completely ignoring her. Stiles didn't seem to have noticed her as he was looking and typing something on his phone.
Then, Astrid thought she was dreaming because Scott started to walk toward her. "Hey, Astrid," he said casually.
"Hey..." she answered cautiously. She hadn't talked directly with Scott since the day at the abandoned station if she remembered correctly.
"I... wanted to apologize, actually. On behalf of Derek, you know. It wasn't right of him to have sent his betas to spy on you. Well, we were all curious to know what you were but I have to admit it wasn't the right thing to do, stalking you." Scott explained, sincerely despite hesitating a little on some words. Astrid had to admit he looked a little nervous. Was she the reason?
Astrid was a little taken aback by what Scott had just said. He had always seemed like someone of high values who only wanted the right thing for people. But after the day he learned that she was a vampire, he seemed so betrayed by her lies and maybe a little horrified by what she was that she thought he wouldn't be talking to her anytime soon. Much less apologizing to her.
"Oh, hum, thanks..." she answered, still processing what had just happened.
"Yeah, and Stiles told me how you helped them last week, at the rave. So, if it's good with you, of course, maybe we can forget everything that happened? The bad stuff, I mean. I know rumors are that werewolves and vampires don't really mix well together but you seem like a good person."
Astrid wasn't sure she really was a good person. If Scott knew everything she had done, he might not have said so anyway, but she felt grateful that he wanted to mend things with her.
"Thank you, Scott," she began. Then, after hesitating, she added, "I guess I can understand why you all wanted to know what I was. I feel like you're very protective of this town."
Scott shrugged while looking away, not really wanting to appear like the hero he so clearly was. The doorbell rang, making Astrid turn to see many people coming in at the same time. Some appeared to be wearing drag makeup and Lydia seemed a bit surprised by their sudden appearance.
When Astrid turned back to Scott, Stiles was giving him a thumbs up. Was he the one that had invited them? She had to recognize the house seemed fuller.
"See! The party is getting started now," Stiles announced while walking up to them. "Hey, Astrid."
Okay, so were they all going to pretend like they hadn't perceived her as the devil in person only a few weeks ago? Well, Astrid wasn't going to complain but the sudden shift was a bit unsettling.
"Are you gonna apologize to Allison or what?" Stiles then asked Scott. Astrid took it as her cue to leave. There was a difference between being civil with them again and being thrown back into Scott's love problems.
"Why should I apologize?" Scott asked in disbelief.
"Okay well, I'm gonna go but it was nice seeing you boys," Astrid made a small wave before heading the other way. Lydia's house seemed to be filling up little by little. The living room was becoming more and more packed and some people were hanging out outside as well.
Astrid approached and talked to other people from school whom she shared classes with. But after some time, she got bored and decided to wander around before running into someone else she knew.
Lydia had a big house. It made her think of the one Klaus had made built for them in Mystic Falls. She missed the room she had there. They hadn't gotten much time to live in it all together but sometimes she wished all siblings would get along better and that they would go back to living all together, like the good old days.
Astrid was now wandering upstairs but she stopped abruptly when she thought she recognized someone. No. It wasn't possible.
Confused, she took another sip from her almost empty glass and followed the familiar figure into another room. She just had to make sure she had just imagined it.
But, to her horror, as soon as she crossed the door of the room, the person she had been following turned around to reveal himself. And, standing in front of her was none other than her father, Mikael.
"Father..." she gasped. Her glass fell to the rugged floor in a thud. Her father was supposed to be dead. And yet, here he was, all bloodied and standing right across from her.
On cue, the man smiled evilly at her. "Astrid! There you are, I've been looking for you," he smirked. "I have to admit finding you wasn't easy. Your siblings almost managed to keep your location safe."
"My... siblings?" she repeated distraughtly, "What have you done to them?" she asked him worriedly. Her mind was going a thousand miles an hour, trying to understand how her father was alive. Klaus had killed him. He was supposed to be gone. This was the whole reason why she had been able to leave Mystic Falls. Her father wasn't there to chase her anymore.
"Oh, I had my fun with them, if you may," he laughed, wiping blood from his cheek with a finger before licking it clean. Whose blood was that? Then, she saw it. The white oak stake. The only one left which had been made unbreakable by her dear mother.
Astrid paled at the thought of what it could entail. "What did you do?!" she asked, panic rising in her voice.
"Only what had to be done. And I have to say you're next, my child," Mikael stated before grabbing the stake behind him. Astrid tried to leave the room as fast as she could but the door had closed behind her.
"No!" she screamed when she felt Mikael run up to her and drive the stake through her heart.
Next thing she knew, she was on her knees, in front of the very room her father had previously stood in. Her hands went to her chest, expecting to feel a stake there but nothing. Her breathing was still all over the place, she looked around her in terror, expecting her father to barge from a dark corner at any moment. But nothing happened.
Astrid took the opportunity to get back up on her feet and ran down the stairs. That had all been a dream or a hallucination. She didn't know. But it hadn't been real. None of it. Mikael was still dead, her siblings still all alive and well, and no white oak stake had gone through her heart.
But something was wrong here. It had all felt so real. She could nearly feel the stake tearing through her skin. When Astrid realized her breathing still hadn't slowed down, she tried to calm down but couldn't. Looking around the room made her fill dizzy and she felt like everyone was staring at her.
This was bad. She was struggling to keep control. Was she gonna vamp out in front of all these people? She had to get out of there. Astrid decided to make a beeline to the front door to leave this god-forsaken house but bumped into someone on the way out.
"Astrid!" she lifted her head to meet Lukas' eyes, staring at her, grinning. However, he seemed to realize something was wrong because he quickly lost his smile and frowned. "Are you okay? What's going on?"
Astrid struggled to get the words out. "I need... I'm sorry, I need to leave," she stammered.
"Wait, wait, do you want me to bring you back home? You don't look so good," Lukas asked her, becoming worried.
"No! No... I just... I need some air, I'm sorry Lukas, enjoy the party." she told him hurriedly before running past him and out into the night. She couldn't risk losing control on Lukas. Normally, control was never a problem for her but this instance was different. She could feel her vampire senses freaking out. Had someone put a spell on her? She was feeling oddly disoriented.
For the first few minutes, Astrid just walked in a straight line as fast as she could with her arms hugging herself. She needed to put some distance between herself and Lydia's house, no matter where she would end up. The cold air was progressively calming her down and her breathing was getting closer to normal again.
She would have liked having some water to put on her face and truly dissociate from what she believed she had just seen. But that'll have to do.
Once she felt the fright she had felt from the hallucination had died down, Astrid sighed and stopped to take in her surroundings. She had walked straight into the woods, like an idiot, and was nowhere close to her house by now. Astrid huffed in frustration. She wasn't completely lost but she would take more time getting home, now.
However, something attracted her enhanced hearing on her left. Astrid turned around and tried to stare at where the sound was coming from, but the darkness of the night combined with the forest didn't make things easy for her. Maybe it was just an animal?
She still paid close attention to whatever could have provoked the noise. This wasn't a slasher movie so she wasn't going to dumbly call out into the unknown. Instead, Astrid stayed on guard, trying to focus on the noise again.
"Astrid?" her shoulders relaxed with a sigh when she saw Isaac emerge from the shadows. "What are you doing here?" he asked her, confused. He was panting a little and looked like he had just been running.
"I could ask you the same question, why are you in the forest alone?" she rose an eyebrow at him while crossing her arms, "are you here to terrorize random people? Well, sorry to disappoint but I don't get scared that easily."
Oh, crap. Astrid noticed a hint of yellow in Isaac's eyes and she realized something. In her panic, she had completely forgotten a pretty important fact about the date. Tonight was a full moon. And she had just gone straight into the woods as if directly walking into the lion's den. Or the wolf's, in that case. That hadn't been the brightest move.
"I'm looking for Derek, actually," he eventually revealed, before staring at her again, "but what are you doing here in the middle of the forest? Don't you know it's a full moon?"
Astrid scoffed, yes, she had realized by now. "Yeah, I... I know, I just... I wanted to get away from the party. You know, Lydia's hosting one for her birthday," she confessed.
Isaac frowned, with maybe a glint of concern for her. "Why? Did something happen?" he asked her a little worriedly. As if she needed him to worry for her.
"I don't know, it was strange I saw something... someone. But it couldn't have been possible," she rambled on. The event was still recent and unpleasant in her mind. "Don't worry about it. Why are you looking for Derek? Aren't you supposed to be locked down for the full moon with your pack or whatever?" she asked, trying to change the subject.
"Well, we were but something happened, Derek's gone. And me, well, I've found something to keep me grounded," he told her, his eyes suddenly becoming shifty at the last part.
"An anchor? Is that what you guys call it?" Isaac nodded. "What was yours?" she asked curiously. She was maybe being a little too nosy but she couldn't help it. And after Isaac had helped Derek spy on her, she couldn't be bothered to avoid questioning Isaac now.
"Hum... it's my father," he confessed while anxiously scratching the back of his head. Astrid's eyes widened but she tried to hide her surprise. The irony of the situation was a little much. Astrid was running from a party because she had hallucinated seeing her dead father trying to kill her again while Isaac had managed to stay in control during a full moon because of his dead father who, if she remembered correctly, hadn't exactly been the father of the year either.
"He wasn't all bad, you know," Isaac added when he noticed Astrid's reaction.
"Don't worry, I'm not one to judge, my father wasn't exactly stellar either," she chuckled dryly. "Shouldn't you be taking care of your alpha or whatever, though?"
Isaac jumped, suddenly remembering his initial mission in the forest. Astrid heard him mutter a string of curses under his breath. "Fuck, I don't know where he is. He wouldn't leave without reason, not on a full moon."
Isaac's breathing started to fasten as he started to grow agitated.
The disappearance of his alpha seemed to be stressing him out more than she thought because Astrid noticed his werewolf claws were out and his eyes were turning bright yellow again. "Hey, Isaac! Breathe, okay? Don't let the full moon get to you, you said you had an anchor, right?"
Astrid took a tentative step closer to Isaac but the beta immediately backed off and held his hand out in front of him, protectively. "Don't! I don't... I don't want to hurt you," he pleaded.
That took Astrid by surprise, she hadn't expected Isaac to know about the risk of werewolf bites for vampires or to want to avoid it. What Isaac probably didn't know was that, even if werewolves on a full moon were usually pretty dangerous for a vampire, she wasn't any vampire, thankfully enough. Being an Original, a werewolf bite wouldn't kill her. It would hurt like a bitch and be a pain in the ass for a few days, of course, but it wouldn't be fatal.
"Don't worry about me. Focus on getting control, alright? Focus on your anchor." Astrid took another step toward Isaac and reached out to touch his right arm lightly. At first, Isaac tensed at the touch, his breathing still uneasy, but he progressively relaxed to it.
Slowly, Isaac took multiple deep breaths and his claws finally retracted themselves. When Isaac lifted his head to look back at her, his eyes remained bright yellow for a few seconds before going back to their original blue-grey color. "Feeling better?" Astrid asked him.
Isaac nodded slowly, "Sorry about that... I guess I still need some practice at the whole control thing," he joked, trying to diffuse the sudden tension caused by his outbreak. Astrid smiled at him.
"Don't worry, I know the feeling. I struggled with control for a long time too," she admitted. Isaac furrowed his brows curiously. After the day at her house, it was the first time she was revealing anything about herself willingly to him. For a while, he had thought she would never trust him with anything ever again.
The two stared at each other for a few seconds before Astrid decided to break the silence, taking her hand off Isaac's arm. "Okay, well, I'm probably gonna go back home now. But good luck with your search, I guess," she smiled awkwardly at him.
"Wait! Well... if you run into Derek one way or another, could you tell him I'm looking for him? Or, give me a call? I'm a little worried about what happened to him, I have to admit."
"Well, yes, why not. I don't have your number, though." As much as she didn't like Derek, if it would help soothe Isaac, she could send him a text if she happened to see Derek.
"Oh, right. Can you pass me your phone? I'll give it to you." Astrid nodded and took her phone out and unlocked it quickly before handing it to Isaac. The beta typed a number before tapping the call button next to it. When Astrid looked at him in confusion, he added, "So that I have your number too, you know?"
Astrid chuckled and took her phone back. She nearly noticed the hint of a blush raising on Isaac's cheeks. Clever boy. "Alright, well good luck then. And good night," she told him again before turning around.
After walking a few steps away, she realized she didn't know which way she was supposed to go, so, she turned once more to him. "Hum, do you mind telling me which is the way to the town before you go?"
Isaac smiled, amused, and pointed to a certain direction which was where he had come from. "Thanks," Astrid told him one last time before disappearing in the darkness of the night, leaving Isaac alone in the woods.
The beta starred into the shadows where Astrid had just disappeared for a few seconds before leaving as well. He had his alpha to find, after all.
————✩ ————
The morning after, Astrid did not want to get out of bed. Thank god it was finally Spring break because she didn't know how she would have found the motivation to go to school. Eventually, she had to resign leaving the comfort of her bed when she felt her hunger creeping in.
She tied her messy curly hair into a ponytail and took a quick shower before throwing on a sweatshirt and some jeans and grabbing a blood bag. What a perfect way to start spring break: by doing nothing.
Astrid thought about calling one of her brothers to mention a visit to Mystic Falls but ended up delaying the call to the evening. Knowing them, there was one chance out of two that they would end up being busy anyway.
Astrid considered calling Rebekah too but, to the latest news, she was still daggered and kept in a coffin by Klaus. Well, that was what she had been told most recently at least. With everything happening here in Beacon Hills, she hadn't received much news from any of her siblings in a while, she realized. What a great sister she was, not even bothering to ask how they were doing.
Well, to her defense, it's not like any of her siblings had done the same. Kol hadn't even responded to her latest message.
Once she was done with her blood bag, Astrid threw it away and went to grab her phone on her nightstand. She hadn't bothered to check her notifications when she went home the night before. Instead, she had changed into some comfy pyjamas and had gone straight to bed.
The first thing she noticed among all her notifications was a message from Lukas. She instantly clicked on it, not looking at the others yet. He was asking her how she was feeling and if she had arrived home okay. He also informed her that Lydia's party had been put to an end by the police after people had started acting weird all evening.
She sighed without realizing it, as the events of the night before were coming back to her. She remembered how she had freaked out after hallucinating seeing Mikael which led her to flee the party. She recalled her run-in with Isaac in the middle of the woods, too.
Astrid proceeded to answer shortly to Lukas, reassuring him by telling him that everything was fine and that she just hadn't been in the mood for a party, not wanting to make him worry more.
Then, she checked on her other notifications and realized that Elijah had tried to kill her multiple times. How odd. She was glad to see she had been mistaken and at least one of her siblings was thinking about her after all.
At the same time, she wondered how come her eldest brother had tried to call her multiple times in a row when he rarely did that. It was probably a result of his patience and calmness or whatever. Point was that this was out of the ordinary and troubled her a little.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang downstairs. With a weird gut feeling, Astrid sped downstairs and opened the door herself only to find herself face-to-face with her eldest brother.
First, she was surprised to see him on her doorstep, all the way across the country from where he was supposed to be. To her latest knowledge, wasn't he in New York or something? She hadn't precisely kept track but he definitely wasn't supposed to be anywhere near California at the moment. It only startled her more.
Her first urge had been to want to hug her older brother -she was happy to see him, after all- but his somber face encouraged her otherwise. Always the elegant one, Elijah was wearing an all-black tux, a color he wasn't used to sporting on a daily.
And then, it all made sense.
The look on Elijah's face alone had been enough for everything to click together. She suddenly understood. Why Kol hadn't answered her texts lately. Why she hadn't gotten news from any of her siblings in a while. But it couldn't be. It just wasn't possible.
"Astrid," Elijah began with a gloomy tone. "something happened." Unconsciously, Astrid started shaking her head, unwilling to hear what was about to come next. "Kol, he... he's dead."
No, no, no. It wasn't possible. Not him. Astrid couldn't believe her ears, it just wasn't possible. But there was no other reason why her brother would be here. And the pained look on his face at her reaction only made it clearer. But it couldn't be, she just couldn't believe it.
Astrid started having trouble breathing. She felt her throat close on itself. How did she feel like she was dying all over again when the only time she had truly died had been more than a thousand years ago?
She shook her head again. Maybe if she refused to listen to Elijah, to block out what he had just told her, then it meant that it wasn't true. That Kol, her brother, her best friend was fine. The universe was playing a prank on her. Hell, maybe Elijah was pulling an evil prank on her. This couldn't be. Not her Kol.
Before she knew it, she felt tears rolling down her cheeks. She hadn't even noticed she had started crying. Her hand came to her mouth as she continued shaking her head in denial. "No, no, it's not possible," she choked, tears starting to overwhelm her face.
Her knees gave out under her and, suddenly, she was on the ground with Elijah's arms around her. As the tears continued spilling down her cheeks, she couldn't help but feel a cruel sense of deja-vu. She had cried the death of another one of her brothers in this exact position, a thousand years ago the day Klaus had come back with Henrik's lifeless body.
"How? How did it happen? Who did it?" she wept, head buried in her brother's shoulders. She could feel her tears soaking his shirt but she didn't care. All that she cared about was that her brother was dead. And someone or something had to have been the cause of it.
"It's... complicated," Elijah began anxiously, his hand softly stroking Astrid's hair. "Shh, I'm here," he cooed as Astrid kept on crying.
She couldn't stop the tears from flowing down her cheeks. She just felt... empty. For a second, she thought, what's the point of living if I don't have Kol to do it with me anymore? The lump in her throat had gotten so big that she didn't know if words would come out of her mouth anymore, even if she tried.
She wanted to see her brother, to hug him one last time. She could still recall Kol smiling and waving at her before leaving Beacon Hills not even a few weeks ago. However, she wouldn't even be able to see his body one last time as she remembered the white oak stake didn't leave any remains of the person's body.
Astrid hated herself for not sending a message sooner. She remembered Klaus' phone call perfectly. He had asked her to do something about Kol or else something bad would happen and now, her brother was dead. Would things have been any different if she had called him a little sooner? If she had convinced him to leave Mystic Falls and come visit her again? She felt like all of this was her fault.
All she could hear over the sound of herself crying was Elijah repeating "I'm sorry" over and over again while hugging her close to him. How had the day gone so completely wrong?
————✩ ————
Astrid was sitting on the bed in her room. Her eyes were still bloodshot and swollen from all the crying. She probably never would have stopped crying all over Elijah's shirt on the porch if her brother hadn't helped her get up and hadn't led her back to her room, gently calming her.
At first, it hadn't helped and she couldn't manage to stop the cries from leaving her body. Then, little by little, she managed to regain some senses and tears eventually stopped rolling down her cheeks, her eyes already far past dehydration by now. If anything, she was even starting to feel a little headache from crying so hard.
Speaking of her brother, Elijah was walking around in her room, putting random clothes in the opened suitcase on the floor. He was the one who had suggested she leave town for a few days. To which she had simply nodded, unable to form coherent words. Her gaze was lost in oblivion and she was still too taken aback by the realization that all this was true and that her brother was indeed dead to concentrate on anything else in her room.
All she could feel was a painful hole in her chest. As if yesterday's hallucination hadn't been only an imagination and that someone had really staked her through the heart. She felt a gaping void in her life as if her brother's death had taken a part of her with it.
"Astrid?" Her brother's voice made her snap from her trance. She turned her head to look at him. "I'm done packing, should we go?"
Astrid nodded halfheartedly even as she felt she wasn't ready to move yet. She was afraid her legs would give out under her again if she tried to stand up. Looking around her room, she spotted a photo of her and Kol which made her tear up again.
It was a picture of the two of them at the lacrosse game when he had come to visit. It had been a blissful night, a fond memory for her. But now, reminiscing on the countless moments she had spent with him only left her with a bittersweet feeling. As if she should have spent more attention to the moment they had shared.
She should have cared to remember exactly each little quirk Kol had. Like how his accent would suddenly switch between words because of all the traveling they had done. About how, when he was really happy, he would get the slightest dimples and how she always liked to tease him about it.
But now, she would never get to hear his voice again or see his smile and that broke her heart. Upon hearing her muffle a sob, Elijah followed Astrid's gaze and his eyes landed on the picture, he sighed sadly. He eventually took a step toward where the photo was hanging and took it off the wall before sitting on the bed, next to Astrid.
"You know he won't ever really leave us, right?" he told her after giving her the picture, "remember what Mother always used to tell us about our sister Freya watching over us from the Other side? Well, it's the same for Kol," he explained to her in attempts to console her.
It wasn't completely false. Being a supernatural creature, Kol was probably in what witches called 'the Other Side' now. But it didn't change the fact that he wasn't there anymore. She couldn't see him again. Too tired to argue, however, she simply nodded, a tear dropping on the picture, before hugging Elijah again.
With a sigh, Astrid eventually managed to stand up, not even bothering to stop the crying. She grabbed her phone on her way out and put it in her pocket alongside the picture of Kol and her and left the room without turning back. Behind her, Elijah grabbed the suitcase and brought it downstairs, after her. "My car is parked in front of the house, I'll be right back," he instructed, holding out her jacket.
Astrid nodded wordlessly while taking her jacket and she left the house. As Elijah had said, in front of the car, an elegant dark car was waiting for her. She walked up to it and sat in the front seat before gazing hopelessly at the road in front of her.
During that time, Elijah took the care to compel the Greenes to make them believe Astrid had gone to visit family and to answer that to anyone asking. It probably didn't change much but it would probably make things easier for Astrid if she ever wanted to come back.
Once he was done, Elijah went back to the car and turned the ignition on. He started driving through the town, eventually passing a sign with "you're leaving Beacon Hills, California" on it while neither of them talked. Astrid put her head on the window, looking at the landscape passing by, still lost in her thoughts and memories of her brother.
Eventually, the soothing sound of the car and the vibrations of the window helped her finally fall asleep, while Elijah glanced at her with a small smile. She was going to be okay, he hoped.
