Chapter 3- Her Eyes

"Then maybe we could all find apartments next to eachother in London and it would be so awesome!" At the moment we are discussing what our plans should be for after the whole schooling process is done and over with.

"What would our jobs be though, like would we all have the same job?" I question.

"Maybe. I mean it would be really fun working with you guys!" Ashley says excitedly.

"But what would our job be?"

"I don't know...maybe we could work in a zoo or something."

"A zoo?" Ethan cuts in with disbelief. "Why a zoo?"

"I don't know, it could be fun working with animals together, we always used to love going to the zoo when we were younger," Ashley explains.

"True," I agree, popping another raisin into my mouth. My eyes quickly glance over to the clock. Only five minutes left of lunch. I look down, across the vast room and sure enough, that same girl is sitting there, watching me as I chew the last raisin in the box. I gulp it down nervously. Maybe she fell asleep with her eyes open...

"Hey! Earth to Luna!" I suddenly realize Ethan has been trying to gain my attention and I turn my head to face him.

"Sorry I-I wasn't paying attention," I say, regaining my focus onto my own friends.

"Yeah no kidding. As I was saying before, what classes do you have after lunch, maybe we have a class together."

I lean over to grab my crumpled schedule out of my bag. I unravel the crinkled page and read my classes aloud.

"Fifth hour is English, sixth is study hall, and seventh is engineering," I report with a sigh.

"Oh! What teacher do you have for English?"

"Mister...Swinburne?" I question my pronunciation as I look up at Ethan.

"Yay! I have him in that hour too!" He enthuses.

"What about you, Ashley?" I peer over to Ashley who is furrowing her eyebrows, looking closely at her schedule. "Um, you okay? Can you see it okay, or-"

"Yeah, I have him too!" She finally looks up at us, smiling.

"Whoo hoo!" Ethan does a little dance in his seat, waving his arms around excitedly. I raise an eyebrow at Ashley, still concerned about her eyesight when the bell rings signaling the end of lunch.

We all stand up, picking up our backpacks and swinging them over our shoulders.

"Onward to English!" Ethan proclaims, beginning to march toward the main stairwell.

"Wait!" I reach my hand forward and grab his backpack strap, pulling him backwards.

"What?" Ethan looks back at me, confused.

"Let's go to a staircase that doesn't have so many people so we can actually make it to class on time," I suggest.

"Oh, okay!" Ethan smiles and turns, marching in the other direction, toward another set of stairs. We all march forward in a line, going around the corner and up the stairs, weaving through the crowds in many different halls before reaching English. I look at the clock hanging on the wall near the room.

"We finally got here with one minute to spare." I tell them, breathing heavily from all the walking and climbing up stairs. I am clearly not fit and sometimes I wish I could just move in fast motion with out getting tired.

"We should go in before we really are late," Ashley suggests, noticing we are blocking the hall as the three of us stand in a line facing the classroom. We walk in and realize immediately that we are some of the last ones to arrive in class. Everyone is already sitting in random seats, chatting among themselves as a tall, older looking man sitting behind a desk, is squinting at a computer screen. I scan the classroom, looking for empty seats and see a few desks unoccupied on the far side of the room.

"Over here!" I signal for Ethan and Ashley to follow as I stride over to the empty seats. I swing my backpack off my shoulder and under the desk of the seat closest to the front.

"I'll be a few more minutes guys, I just have to finish up this email and then we may begin," Mr. Swinburne announces in a deep, rumbling voice. As I turn around to talk to my friends, I catch a glimpse of shining black hair near the back corner of the class. I quickly spin my head around and take in a quick breath of disbelief as I lay my eyes upon the same girl as before, only this time, her head is nestled into her arms laying on the desk and there are small white earbuds perched inside her ears, the cords tumbling down her hair and into her hoodie pocket.

This is your chance to finally talk to her, I think. I look over at Ethan and Ashley who are in a deep conversation about whether an avocado is a fruit or not. I quietly stand up from my desk and begin to walk through the other desks, making my way to the girl who I will finally know the name of. Soon I am standing above her and can hear the faint music from her earbuds as I lightly tap her on the shoulder. She jolts slightly, not expecting me to poke her and detaches her earbuds before tilting her head up to look at me.

The first thing I notice strikes me by surprise, so much so that I almost stumble backwards and have to catch myself by holding onto the back of her chair.

Her eyes.

Her eyes are a shining shade of deep purple, like staring into the night sky, dark purple with a thousand stars gleaming back at me.

I gasp before gaining control of myself and begin to speak.

"Um, hi. I'm Luna and I just, you know, wanted to say hello and see if you wanted to talk, or um hangout sometime," I sputter out.

She gives me a small smile, filling my heart with warmth before saying, "Hi Luna. I'm Raven."

I gape at her. Raven. That name fits her so well. It's so beautiful and-

"Uh, why are you staring at me?" She looks into my eyes, confused. Maybe a small gleam of nervousness mixed in there as well, but I can't tell for sure.

"Oh, um, well, your name is just really beautiful, I mean good. It's a good name," I stutter, catching myself before I say something stupid.

A slight blush creeps onto her cheeks, before she replies, "Thanks. Your name is too. Beautiful I mean."

Now it was my turn to blush. She smiles, a full bright smile this time. I return the smile.

"Alright everyone, back into your seats if you please!" Mr. Swinburne shouts from his desk.

I reluctantly start to make my way back to my desk, looking over my shoulder to give Raven one last smile.

I plop down into my desk, a warm feeling still tingling all over my body.

"Hello class. Um, I'm Mr. Swinburne. I am here to teach you to learn, well like duh, but I will enhance your brains to hold information, you know I'm just gonna start with the slides about me."

"This teacher is even more awkward than me. I didn't think that was possible!" Ashley whispers from behind me.

I let out a small laugh and Mr. Swinburne glances in my direction. I close my mouth immediately and look down at the smooth wood of the desk.

Mr. Swinburne goes through his slides, stuttering often, his eyes darting around the room nervously as he tries to think of what to say next.

"We won't be doing much today, except, you know like talking about me and you and stuff, but uh tomorrow we will be starting our first project of the year. You will all need to think about what partners you will choose, groups of two would be preferable and-" the bell suddenly rings, cutting Mr. Swinburne off. "Well, uh, ok then, I guess I'll see you tomorrow."

I hear Ashley groan from behind me as we all stream out of the room. "I'm already done with school and it's only the first day!"

"Same." I reply quickly before splitting from the group, going down a narrow hall to find my next class. I scan the crowds of people closing in around me. I can hear only parts of their conversation and it makes me think. Every single person that I pass by has their own life and story and has as complicated a mind as I do. I slowly fall into a small existential crisis in between classes before quickly shaking my head, searching my thoughts for something else to think about. Looking through the crowd, I will occasionally see a glimpse of Raven's jet black hair, but as I double take, she's gone again. I'm going crazy.

I go through my last two classes, barely paying attention and swimming through the thoughts clouding my mind. Raven. She seems to always be there. Even if I know she isn't anywhere near, I can almost feel her purple gleaming eyes watching my every movement. I can't deny that I do enjoy the attention, but it is creepy in a way. But then again, it's also kind of comforting, knowing that someone is always keeping an eye out for you and maybe even enjoys looking at you. It's hard to explain, but it makes my mind form many new questions and my curiosity about Raven grows.

The final bell finally rings and I power walk out of the class and out the front doors of the school. I pull out my phone and see a new text message from my mom.

Mom: I'm parked in the front row of the main parking lot, on the far side from the main doors.
Luna: ok.

I tuck my phone back into my pocket and start walking down the sidewalk, to the end of the row of cars. I soon spot the familiar blue car with my mother smiling brightly behind the wheel. I open the car door and climb inside, setting my backpack down in front of my legs as I close the door.

"So...how was your first day of high school?" Mom asks excitedly, pulling out of the lot.

Before I can answer, I catch a glimpse of Raven's lean figure, slumped against the side of the school, earbuds hanging out of her ears, and her eyes fixed on the car leaving the school.

I close my eyes briefly and focus my attention back on Mom.

"It was pretty good, I guess."

"Really? Did you meet anyone new? Maybe a future boyfriend for my beautiful daughter?"

"No." I respond quickly, annoyed. But then I think of Raven and then remember Lucas from History. "I mean, I don't really know."

"Yeah! Can't wait to meet him!" She looks over at me, excitement filling her eyes.

"Yup." I reply with a sigh. My mom is always like this. She just wants the perfect life for her perfect baby girl. Little does she know that my life is about to explode around me.

"As celebration for your first day of school, I thought I would take you to your favorite restaurant for dinner tonight! How's that sound?"

"That's sounds great!" My mood instantly becomes a hundred times better as I realize I will soon have a cheesy slice of warm pizza filling my mouth.

We arrive at the pizza restaurant, shove our faces with the best pizza ever created, and drive home. After doing a bit of homework, I crawl under my covers, sinking into the mattress after a long, tiring day. I roll over and feel my eyes droop as I fall into a dream, remembering only those purple eyes staring into my own.
