Queen - Hot Space

(An underrated good album - overrated by how much people express their dislike for this)

❤💙💚💛

Staying Power: it's a decent song, not a favorite but I guess it has a good horn solo. 6/10

Dancer: very catchy, since it's Brian's song it's more rock heavy rather than dance music, I like the melody and the "yeah yeah yeahs" where you can hear Roger. Good solo. It mentions the album name. 8/10

Back Chat: a funky bop. Even though it's about someone always getting in your way and bossing you, it's so catchy to dance to. I love the guitar solo, even though Brian had to fight for it. Roger once said the drum solo was the best part. 10/10

Body Language : it's too repetitive (they say body like 30 times), there's no guitar, the lyrics are a little weak, which is surprising coming from Freddie. 3/10

Action This Day: not the strongest lyrics either, but it's good, and the "I got a feeling this world is using me" line is good. And I like the run on 'world'. Love that it's a Freddie/Roger duet. the chorus is nice, I like the "we gotta learn to love to live" part-- it sounds hopeful to me, even if it means to love and to live. 8/10

Put Out The Fire: very classic American sounding to me, of course it's got Brian's clever wordplay, and it's a song protesting gun violence. The best line being "you need a weapon like a hole in the head". Though I don't love the car screeching sound at the end . 9/10

Life Is Real (Song For Lennon): beautiful tribute to John, I love the words and music and can tell it's very Lennon-inspired, kinda reminds me of "Mother" (John's solo song). 10/10

Calling All Girls: very 80s. It's a decent song, but I like Roger's other song on this album better. It's a little boring and I usually skip it. It reminds me a little of 'Because' with the "take this message of love... this message is old this message is true.." 6/10

Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love): beautiful melody, nice words. I like when they sing in Spanish (also Japanese and Arabic years earlier). It's a nice ballad, very mellow solo. Catchy chorus. I like the intro. 8/10

Cool Cat: it's mellow, there's some good guitar on it (I think mostly by John), nice Freddie/John collaboration. I like Freddie's falsetto voice, it's very sweet and bright. The lyrics are fine, mostly I like the music. 8/10

Under Pressure: much better as a live song. There is that iconic 'ding-ding-ding-dig-a-ding-ding' riff, but it's pretty boring. I do like the really high note Freddie hits (a 6th note?), but I'm not a Bowie fan. 4/10

BONUS:

Soul Brother (B-side): this is mostly just full of references, like Ringo Starr's 'Postcards From Paradise'. But it's done nicely, again with Freddie's falsetto that sounds effortless is pretty. I like when he sings the line, "he's my best friend, he's my champion," it's sweet. A song for Brian written by mostly Freddie though Roger and John are credited. 7/10
