Chapitre 54: L'introduction d'Espérance
A few months passed after the marriage.
During break time, Remy sat in the balcony of his restaurant and smiled proudly as he read Le Rat Qui Est Le Chef Cuisinier. He was also content about the fact that the news about him being able to cook and the restaurant wouldn't close because of him. While he was reading, he felt a little tug on his tail. He looked behind to see what was pulling on his tail. "Daddy," The little rat said as she tugged on Remy's tail. "Daddy, play with me."
"Now, now, little one," Git said as he lifted the little rat.
"Papa," the little rat said as Git lifted him high.
"That's right, play with papa. Daddy's busy right now," Git said.
"I'm not busy, it's my break time," Remy said.
"I don't want anyone to bother you when you're at your workplace," Git said. "Even when it's break time. You need it."
"Git, you know that she's our daughter," Remy said. "Come here, daddy will play with you until the break is over," Remy said to the little rat. Git smiled and put him down so that the little one can go to his dad. "You know, I'm so glad that we adopted her."
"I know, look at her, she's such a bundle of joy," Git said. The little rat had bluish-gray fur, pink ears, nose, paws, and tail, brown pupil, hazel eyes, and eyelids. Although she's not biologically related to Remy nor Git, she still had every single major trait that each of them had. "You also gave her an amazing name." The day Remy and Git adopted her, Remy named her 'Espérance', which means 'hope' in French.
"Of course," Remy replied. "She's our hope for our future's happiness."
"Although it's still a mystery of why her parents would just give her up," Git said. "She's too precious to be abandoned."
"Maybe they couldn't take care of her," Remy suggested. "Either way, she's still our daughter, and I'm not giving her up."
"Papa," Espérance called for Git as she gestured him to come.
"All right. Papa's on his way," Git went towards Remy and Espérance. As Git sat down next to them, she held on to both Remy and Git.
"Daddy! Papa!" Then she giggled as she tried to cuddle both of them. Remy's jaws dropped and put his hands over his mouth. Git smiled amorously. Their daughter was just irresistibly adorable that they needed to cuddle her back.
"Aww..." Remy said as he cuddled Espérance. "She's too precious for me to ignore."
"I understand you," Git said as he cuddled both Remy and Espérance.
"You must be very happy," Django's taunting voice came from behind, trying to embarrass them.
"Oh, Django, stop it," Desiree said. "That was us when we had Emile. I always wanted to cuddle Remy like that. But I'm so glad I found my family now. It feels like yesterday when I found all of you."They all decided to sit on the table to chat until Remy's break time was over.
"Man, I wish I can get a kid," Emile said as he looked at Remy, Git, and Espérance.
"You can get one when you get a wife," Django said. Remy, Git, and Desiree snickered.
"By the way," Emile started. Everyone turned attention to Emile, except Django, who started to drink his lemonade. "Who's practically the mom in your family?" Emile asked with a straight face. Django spits violently by that question and started to cough aggressively. Desiree laughed hysterically as Django spit all over, mostly on Emile. Remy and Git turned to each other.
"That's a common misconception," Remy said. "We're both dads."
"He is right," Git added. "But we have different roles, surprisingly."
"But still, do you think I do more of the 'mom role' of the family?" Remy asked.
"I think so," Git said. "We both work, and you do pretty much all the housework."
"You do help sometimes," Remy said.
"Sometimes," Git said.
"I don't know how this all works out when there's no biological mom," Django said. "I don't think this ever happened before."
"I'm sure Remy and Git are being good parents for our granddaughter," Desiree said.
"Well, my break is almost over now," Remy said. "Wanna play with grandpa, grandma, and uncle?" Remy asked his daughter.
"What about daddy?" Espérance asked.
"Daddy has to work," Remy replied.
"What about papa?" Espérance asked.
"Papa will be here," Git replied.
"All right, sweetie," Remy said. "Daddy has to go. Daddy will play with you later."
"Bye-bye, daddy," Espérance said as she waved.
"Bye-bye, sweetheart," Remy kissed her on the forehead and went into the kitchen. Espérance crawled to her grandparents.
"What do you want to do, precious?" Desiree asked as she held and caressed her granddaughter's cheek.
"I want to ride an airplane!" Espérance said excitedly.
"You know what to do, Django," Desiree carried Espérance and made Django carry her.
"Wait, now?!" Django asked.
"Air-plane! Air-plane! Air-plane!" Espérance cheered.
"Oh, all right, all right," Django said helplessly, but he still enjoyed giving his granddaughter an airplane flight. He lied down and held her up with his paws and feet. "Now, passengers, we'll take off in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1!" He shook gently so that Espérance can enjoy her flight. Surely she loved it. She was giggling as Django took her on a flight. "Fun, yes?"
"Yeah!" Espérance said as she giggled in such excitement as Django shook her. Even though they were both having fun, one of them did have limits. Django became so tired and gently put her down and breathed heavily. "Aww... I want more..."
"Oh my..." Django breathed. "Honey... grandpa is tired... maybe later..."
"Oh Django, you're getting old," Desiree said as she gently rubbed his back to relieve some pain. Then she turned to Espérance, opened her arms and said, "All right, play with grandma." Espérance crawled towards her grandmother. "What do you want to do with grandmama?"
"I wanna play with you, him, him, him, and everyone!" Espérance said excitedly as she pointed at her pops, uncle, and grandfather.
"Okay," Desiree laughed. "What do you want to play?" Desiree asked.
"Hide-and-seek!" Espérance said.
"Well, what do you guys think?" Desiree asked everyone else. They all agreed. Espérance volunteered to be the seeker while everyone hid. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30! Ready or not, here I come!" Espérance went around to find everyone. She looked around to find a trace of the hiders. Ears? Tails? Furs? She even searched for any sounds. Rustling? Stepping? Breathing? She heard one. She sneaked up to the place where she heard the sound. Then she jumped and roared aggressively, "I found you!"
"Aww, darn," Emile crawled out.
"Three more to go!" Espérance sneaked towards the garden full of flowers. "I found both of you!" Espérance exclaimed as she looked at both sides of the garden.
"Aww, you're good at this!" Django said as he popped out from the left side of the pot.
"This is why I told you we needed to be in separate hiding places," Desiree said as she popped out from the right side of the pot.
Espérance continued to search. She lifted every single tablecloth. All the other rats were staying quiet for some reason. When she approached the biggest table, where there were no other rats, and lifted the tablecloth, she exclaimed, "I found you!"
"That's my daughter," Git said as he crawled out from under the table. Everyone gathered around and complimented on how good she was good at seeking.
"All right, uncle," Espérance said, "you're it!"
Emile counted until thirty and went around to find his dad, mom, brother-in-law, and niece. He looked around and he immediately found his dad. "Dad, I can see your tail," Emile said as he walked towards the tail and grabbed it.
"Darn it," Django said, a little sarcastically.
"Dad," Emile whispered. "Are you even trying?"
"You need to find Espérance last," Django whispered back. "I admit, I'm kinda lazy to play, but she's still my granddaughter. So I need to my role as her grandfather."
"Aww, dad," Emile said. "All right, I need to find the rest."
Django sat at the table and waited for Emile to find everyone else. "Aha! Found you, mom!" Emile exclaimed as he looked inside the garden. Desiree laughed as she jumped out of her hiding spot and sat next to Django. "Found, you!" Emile exclaimed as he grabbed Git by his ear tag. Git chuckled and scratched his head as he walked out. "Now, I just gotta find Espérance." Emile walked around the whole balcony, but Espérance was nowhere to be found. "Espérance?" Emile asked as he looked around. "Espérance?" His voice started to fill with panic. "Guys! I can't find Espérance anywhere!"
"What?" Django asked.
"Oh, where can she be?" Desiree asked.
Git quickly stood up and ran around to find his daughter. "Espérance?" He asked calmly. "Papa's here. Come out now, you won." He continued to search around. "Espérance, please come to papa." He heard no response... "Oh no..."
"Ooh... what are we gonna do?" Emile panicked.
"Don't worry, we'll help you," Desiree said as she jumped out of her chair.
"We can find her before Remy gets back," Django also jumped out of his chair. They all split up and looked for her as they all whispered her name as they looked around. Under the tables? No. Behind the bushes? No. In the pipes next to the balcony? No.
They all assembled back at the table where they sat. "Did you find her?" Git asked.
"No." "Not even a trace." "She hid really well." They all ad-libbed worriedly.
"All right, let's go find her again," Git suggested. "This time, look around the restaurant. Try not to disturb the customers' appetite." They all agreed. Git, Django, and Desiree took off.
"I'll just stay here for a while..." Emile said as he waited in case she comes back.
Then he heard a voice that was going to make the situation even worse. "Espérance!" Remy called excitedly. "Time for dinner! Your favorite, shrimp fritters and galbi!" Remy came out with a tray and plates of shrimp fritters and galbi.
"Hey, Remy!" Emile called. "Serving food for Espérance?"
"Yes and I'll get your food later," Remy said. "Espérance! Come on out! Time to eat!"
"Uhh, Remy," Emile said. "I don't think she wants to eat right now..."
"What do you mean?" Remy asked as he put the tray down on the table to rest his arms. "She hasn't eaten after lunch. It's been almost seven hours now."
"She wants to play more," Emile replied quickly. "She's been having so much time playing hide-and-seek!"
"Well, let's find her," Remy said.
"Oh, nonono," Emile stopped him. "Let her hide and be found by mom, or dad, or Git."
Remy started to feel suspicion. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah!" Emile quickly replied as a drop of cold sweat ran down through his cheek. "Everything is-"
"I can't find her anywhere!" Desiree popped out.
"She's nowhere to be found!" Django climbed up.
"What'll we tell Remy?" Git hopped up and shook his hand. Then they all noticed Remy standing right in front of Emile. Desiree mouthed "oops". Django cleared his throat. Emile put his hand over his forehead.
"What do you mean you can't find her anywhere, she's nowhere to be found, and what'll you tell me?" Remy asked with his voice mixed with concern and anger.
"Now, now," Git walked up to him, "don't get too excited. We were playing hide-and-seek, and we can't seem to find Espérance anywhere!"
Remy stood there. "Oh my..." Remy tried to stay calm. Then he started to walk and look around. "Espérance? Espérance? Where are you, sweetie?"
"It's no use," Git said. "We looked everywhere..."
Remy pushed on the wall, then there was one of the bricks that were sticking out, and was very loose. He pulled the brick and looked inside. "Oh, Espérance..." Remy carried her out, who was sleeping peacefully.
"No wonder we couldn't find her," Desiree said.
"And no wonder she didn't answer us," Git added.
"We looked everywhere except inside the wall," Django chuckled.
"I never knew she's this good at hiding," Emile scratched his head.
"Since when did she gain weight?" Remy grunted as he carried her right up again.
"Here, Remy, let me take her," Git said. Remy carefully handed their daughter to his husband's arms. As soon as she was transferred, her eyes slowly began to open. "Did you sleep tight, my princess?"
"Papa?" Espérance yawned and rubbed her eyes.
"All right now," Remy said as he stroked her forehead. "Time for dinner."
"Dinner!" Espérance violently cheered and aggressively jumped out of her pop's arms, which did hurt as she kicked him. She ran towards the tray and started to stuff her face with shrimp fritters.
"Honey! Don't eat so quickly!" Remy said as he ran up to her.
"Daddy!" Espérance cheered with her mouth full of shrimp fritters. Then she grabbed one of the shrimp fritters and put it in Remy's mouth. Remy snickered by her action.
Git stood next to her. "Wow, you can really kick! You kicked papa right in the chest."
"Papa!" She cheered again and put one of the shrimp fritters in his mouth. Git chuckled.
"Remy, we're hungry too," Emile said.
"I know, I know," Remy said. "I have your food prepared." He went inside to get the tray for their dishes. Git went along to help. Remy served pasta to his dad, his mom, his brother, and his husband.
"Remy, this is cold!" Emile complained without taking the first bite.
"It would've been warm if you found her in time," Remy replied.
"But it is still good!" Desiree said as she took a bite.
"Interesting, it's delicious even when it's cold," Django said as he swallowed.
So then Emile took a bite. "Oh my gosh! This is surprisingly good!"
"Well, the professional cook should know how to make the food delicious even when it turns cold," Remy said.
"I remember you set the test that way," Emile said as he chewed on his pasta.
Remy smiled proudly and watched them eat his cooking. Git chuckled and Espérance giggled as he gave her a piggyback ride. "Git, did you eat?" Remy asked.
"Kinda, just one shrimp fritters our daughter gave me," Git replied. "What about you?" Remy shook his head. "I'll give her more piggyback rides and let's have a bite."
"Sounds fair," Remy said.
