Chapitre 46: Un Problème, Nouveau, Grand, et Dangereux
The night in Paris was as beautiful as always as it exerted the sparkly lights of the city. Though there was only one color, there was not a single person in Paris who was not pleased with the sparkly view of the lights that were exerting from the houses, buildings, streets, and Eiffel Tower. People were walking around and enjoying the lights that were shining upon them while having a small cup of tea or coffee for a better atmosphere. People who were inside the building clinked their wine glasses that were less than half full. Everyone in Paris was having a romantic, dreamy time.
However, that beautiful view and the atmosphere did not please Remy tonight. "Oh dear..." Remy anxiously walked in circles. Git, not knowing what to do to help him, just sat there nervously as a drop of cold sweat ran down from his head, down to his cheek, down to his chin, and dropped out of his chin. "This is bad... very very bad... oh... I hope the worst case doesn't come..." Remy couldn't relax for a second. He was in serious trouble, deep deep trouble. However, he was not the only one in trouble. Others who are in trouble include Linguini, Colette, Anton Ego, Horst, Pompidou, Larousse, Lalo, Mustafa, and Skinner. In any rate, they could lose their job.
********
In the afternoon, Remy secretly attended the construction site with Linguini, Colette, Anton Ego, Horst, Pompidou, Larousse, Lalo, Mustafa, and Skinner as he hid in Colette's purse. The restaurant was almost close to being done. The tables and chandeliers were set up, everything was set and ready to be used in the kitchen, the interior resembled the interior of a palace as it was coated with gold, red, and fancy lace pattern. On the table, there was a petite and neat vase with a fake yet elegant flower in it, and above to the ceiling, there were fancy chandeliers gleaming.
"Wow, this is so beautiful!" Pompidou said as he looked around the dining hall. "It is much prettier than Gusteau's restaurant!"
"Look at all the chandeliers!" Larousse said in the dining hall as he was standing next to Pompidou. "They're much better than what Gusteau's restaurant used to have!"
When they entered the kitchen, the illuminating silver
"I really like the kitchen!" Horst said. "It's much wider than Gusteau's!"
"Okay, why don't we stop comparing this to Gusteau's? It's bringing up really bad memories that I do not want to remember," Colette said.
"I think we had much worse experience when we tried to have our own," Mustafa said as he brought up what happened in their previous restaurant.
"Oh yeah, that was much worse," Lalo said.
"By the way, che- I mean, I shouldn't call you chef anymore, or should I?" Pompidou said to Skinner, someone who they never had contact after the closing of Gusteau's restaurant.
"You don't have to call me chef, but I was working at a convenience store," Skinner said.
"I won't ask any more questions..." Pompidou said.
"Excuse me, who is Alfredo Linguini, Colette Linguini, and Anton Ego?" One of the men in the suit asked as he came in front of Linguini, Colette, Anton Ego, Horst, Pompidou, Larousse, Lalo, Mustafa, and Skinner.
"I am," Linguini, Colette, and Ego answered.
"I need you to come here for a second," the man replied. Everyone else was going to follow after them. "Uh... not all of you. I just need to talk to the main three. Please wait here while I talk to them."
"Aww..." Lalo said.
"Let's just wait, it wouldn't be bad," Pompidou said.
In the separate area, the man showed Linguini, Colette, and Ego the bag of small pieces of hair, blocks of bricks with empty spaces, and some brown crumbs. "We have investigated these hairs, these areas, and these crumbs. And it turns out, these hairs are identified as rodent hair, the rats seemed to be around those bricks, and these crumbs are actually rats' waste. It seemed that there were rats in this restaurant and no one has noticed them. And since there was no sickness or disease among people who ate at this restaurant, we may close our eyes on this one, but next time the restaurant is set up, you will have to be extra careful, or your restaurant must close down even after you have invested so much money to build it even bigger and taller."
"I see," Linguini replied. Colette didn't say anything. Ego gulped. Remy who was in Linguini's pocket was shuddering in fear and anxiety.
"Do you know anything about any rats?" The man asked. "It seems that there was not just several in here, but at least tens, maybe hundreds of rats have crept in here."
"No, we do not know anything about rats," Linguini said as a cold sweat ran down on the back of his head.
"We made sure we blocked all the rat holes," Ego said rather calmly.
"All right, but keep in mind, if there's a report or evidence that there is a rat in the restaurant, the restaurant will shut down without warning," the man replied.
"We understand, thank you," Colette replied, trying to be calm.
Before the man left, he turned back and said, "I think I remember you two folks... didn't you guys participate in the International European Cuisine Competition? I think there were rumors about you two being disqualified because you two brought a... rat...?"
"That's not us. We were disqualified but because we brought premade sauce," Colette said straight up so that the man would believe that she's not lying. The truth is, her heart was beating so fast she felt the pounding of her heart and the blood racing throughout her body.
Ego decided to have a personal space. Linguini and Colette went back to the group.
"Well, what did the man say?" Lalo asked. He was the most curious one out of every returning cook.
"You guys must keep this secret from everyone," Linguini said.
"Is it about the chef rat?" Pompidou asked.
"Shhhh!!" Colette shushed as she quickly covered Pompidou's mouth. "You can't just say that out loud! We'll be caught! And once they know there have been rats in the restaurants, we'll be shut down forever! You're working at this restaurant so you have to be careful if you don't want to be ruined again!"
"We need to be careful," Lalo said.
"Yeah, we're in so much debt that we can't risk another failure," Horst said.
"Ah, I really hope it doesn't happen to us again," Larousse said.
"I don't want to end up unemployed again!" Lalo said.
"No one wants to! Just keep quiet!" Colette snapped.
"Sorry we're in debt now we have to find a job somehow..." Pompidou said in an extremely depressing tone.
"We understand, but let's calm down here," Linguini suggested calmly. "Now if you'll excuse me. Colette, I'll borrow your bag for just a second." He walked out of the restaurant as he held on to Colette's purse by the purse, not the straps. He walked away far away from where no one else can see them. Then he quickly entered the alley where no one can see him. He carefully took out Remy out of Colette's purse. "Di... did you hear that, little chef?" Linguini asked Remy. They were both anxious. Remy nodded. "Oh... I'm feeling weak on my knees... what are we going to do? If they realize that you're the one who has been cooking the whole time, our lives would be ruined!" Linguini shuddered. Remy didn't know what to say. He was also scared. He finally got a chance to cook for people around the world, and just for being something he is, his dreams would shatter into pieces like a wine glass.
A few moments later, the man returned to Linguini and said, "So, we found even more traces of rats. We will investigate them, and if they tend to be over the limit that violates the health code, we will have to shut this place down again."
"What...?" Linguini asked.
Remy felt his heart sink down to his stomach.
"I'm sorry, it's not my choice, but the government is going to take actions when the evidence is overwhelming," the man said. "The worst thing that will happen is restaurant being shut down."
"All right," Linguini could not say anything else. Remy was still as if he was frozen into a block of ice.
The rest of the cook realized what was going on, and they started to panic again.
"Why is everything bad happening to us?" Lalo complained.
"This is so ridiculous," Horst sighed as he placed one hand over his head.
"Everyone calm down!" Colette said even though she really wanted to cry out of deep anxiety.
"Little chef...? Are you... all right...?" Linguini asked quietly. Remy crouched in the purse, his face expressionless, and exerting gloomy aura. "Everything will be all right... chef..." Even Linguini was shaking.
********
After they all visited and left the construction site, they gathered at Linguini and Colette's house.
"What difference does it make to have another meeting?" Lalo asked.
"We have to find an alternative!" Colette said as she slammed her hands on the table.
"But we're all broke! How're we gonna get a new restaurant?" Horst asked.
"We have no savings!" Pompidou said.
The argument went on for good thirty minutes while Linguini stood there, hesitating, not knowing what to do. He pulled out Remy from Colette's purse and led him to his resting area. Remy sat on his bed, and crouched in despair. "I'm sorry, little chef, there's nothing else I can do..." Linguini walked away.
Several moments later, the arguing stopped and everyone left. Remy stood up and walked around in anxiety. "Oh man..." Remy's concern was converted into the panic that he could not stay still anymore.
"Remy...? Are you all right?" Git said from the windowsill, who saw Remy walking around back and forth with a concerned expression across his face, asked before he was able to greet him cheerfully.
********
This is why Remy was walking around nervously and anxious in circles. "What am I gonna do...? If I do get caught... the restaurant... their jobs... my... my... my dream..."
"They're not gonna disappear, Remy," Git encouraged. "Everything is going to turn out well as you need it to be."
"I'm just so anxious... I can't even eat, drink, rest... I don't think I can even sleep later..." Remy panicked. He crouched down and put his hands over his head.
"Remy," Git said as he embraced him. "Was there ever a day when my words did not come true? I always said things will be better. Sure there were some problems between, but my assumptions were never wrong. I promise everything will work out for you."
Remy sniffled as he hugged Git back.
"What if... it really closes?" Remy asked. Although he did not like to be negative, he still had to be realistic.
"If it does, you start all over again," Git said. "There will be some way to start all over again and cook as your heart desires. Dreams never give up on you. It's is up to one whether they decide to continue to chase it or not."
Remy withdrew his head, not his arms, and looked Git into the eyes and said, "Wow, that is the kindest and the wisest thing you said to me so far."
"You always say that," Git said with a smile.
"And I will continue to do so," Remy smiled back.
