Chapitre 10 : Une Grande Difficulté

On Saturday afternoon, Remy spent time with the rats in the colony. Every week, all the rats greeted him excitedly. He was the leader's son after all. All the rats ask him questions such as: "How is the bistro running?", "Is your boss kind to you?", and "Are you enjoying your job?". It was funny because most of the rats visit his bistro everyday. He never got tired of answering these questions. He felt very proud that he was able to answer them with positive attitude. He talked to his father and Emile for a while as they ate together.

"Well, son," Django started, "I'm glad that your dream is successful,"

"Uh-huh," Emile nodded in agreement, "thanks to you, we can eat good food that we never thought of eating!"

"Thank you, " Remy said, "You helped me make it possible, especially the time before the huge restaurant closed down."

It was first time that Remy talked to his father without arguing once. After talking to his father and Emile for a while, Remy decided to take a fresh air. He gazed up at the Eiffel Tower. Although he was at the low ground, The Eiffel Tower looked miraculous in the night as usual.

"Maybe we should visit the Eiffel Tower again," Git said as he sneaked up beside him. Remy, pretty much used to it, just have him a warm smile.

"I still cannot forget that day," Remy said, "it was one of the most luxurious day I ever had."

"It gotta be," Git said in agreement.

Then they talked outside for a while. It was like another date for them. Whenever they talked, joked, and laughed, they don't feel the time go by. When they didn't have much to say, it was already night. Remy decided to go back home.

"Hey dad, I'm going to head back now," Remy told his father before he left.

"I'll be back, sir," Git said.

"Be safe, both of you," Django said as they both left.

Emile watched them leave. He wondered how both of them can be that friendly. Before they settled in new colony, they weren't that close. They never talked to each other that long before. Without his dad knowing, Emile sneaked out to spy on Git and Remy. He saw both of them walking, holding hands. Why are they holding hands? Emile thought as his suspicion grew. He sneakily followed them so that they won't notice. Then he also saw Git wrapping his arms around Remy as they both talked to each other very happily. Whoa, what is going on here? Oh no, they can't possibly be... Eventually, they came in front of their house. Emile watched from the distance. Emile examined them as they talked a little longer. Then his eyes opened wide in shock after witnessing them kiss before Git left. Oh my goodness, I can't believe they're really in a relationship! I just can't believe this! They're both... male! How can this ever happen to rats? Emile thought, unable to believe what he just saw. When he went back to the colony, he tried to stay very calm, because if his dad knew, he wouldn't know how he would react. So he decided to ask Remy tomorrow when he gets a chance to.

On Monday, during lunch break, Emile visited Remy at the bistro. Remy was eating pieces of bread and some fruits.

"Hey, Emile!" Remy said as he waved. "What brings you here?"

"I just..." Emile started nervously, "needed to ask you... something,"

"Sure," Remy said as he continued to eat.

Emile walked up to him, took a deep breath and asked, "Are you dating Git?"

Remy froze for a moment. Then he said hesitantly, trying to stay calm at the same time, "N-no, what are you talking about? Wh-what makes you think such things?"

"Well, when he walked you home, I saw you two kiss," Emile replied with a concerned face. Remy then completely froze. He dropped the piece of bread he was eating. There was a silence for few minutes. Emile and Remy were both concerned. They don't know what would happen if their father finds out. "What are we gonna do?" Emile asked cautiously.

"Let's keep it a secret for now," Remy replied, but he knew that Emile, who is not really good at keeping secrets, would accidently tell his father some point.

"You know I'm not good at keeping secrets," Emile said worriedly as he admitted, "I couldn't keep the secret that you were working here!"

"Git and I'll figure something out," Remy said unconfidently, "Just try to give us much time as possible."

Remy tried to not let this conflict to bother him during the dinner rush. But it did affect him at some point. He eventually put too much oil on the frying pan, dumped too much sauce on the steak, and overcooked the pasta. Colette and Linguini looked at Remy with concern. He never made this kind of mistake.

"Are you okay, little chef?" Linguini asked worriedly.

"You're not doing your best today," Colette asked, deeply concerned with Remy's condition. Remy just shook his head. "Why don't you take a break? It's okay, I'll take care of it," Colette suggested encouragingly. Remy walked to his rest area with his head down. Dinner rush was soon over. The glass half full, there were much less customers today than usual, so Colette was able to handle the rest of the orders by herself. After every customers left, Linguini and Colette walked up to him.

"Little chef?" Linguini said, Remy looked up, "I just wanted to tell you that you can take as much time as you need."

"Everyone has bad days," Colette said, "We understand."

Remy sadly and nervously nodded. Linguini and Colette left after they turned the light off in the dining area. Remy put his head down in stress. Oh my goodness, what are we gonna do? Dad will find out eventually!

Soon, Git came into the bistro to pick up Remy. He noticed that Remy was depressed. Git carefully walked up to him. He did not want to bother Remy at a time like that or they would argue again.

"Is everything... okay?" Git asked modestly.

"Uh..." Remy started anxiously, "Emile... uh... found... out..."

Git froze. "Wh- really?" He couldn't believe his ears. "You... you're joking right? Right?" Git asked hesitantly. Remy shook his head. "Well... what happened? How did he figure out that we're in a relationship?"

"Apparently," Remy continued, "He was spying on us on Saturday when you took me back home. So today, during lunch break, he asked me if I was dating you. I denied it in the beginning but he mentioned that he saw us kiss." Git looked even more anxious that beginning. "I... I told him to keep it a secret, but he admitted that he is not good at keeping secrets. So I told him to give us some time to think about it... so that we can be prepared how to react to my dad's reaction when he figures it out. I, uh, I knew this would happen, but I lost my confidence all of the sudden..."

Git let out a deep breath. Remy covered his face with his head down. There was a long moment of silence. Then Git started, "It will be all right. I don't know how your father is going to react but we can make this work together if bad or worse things happen." Remy silently nodded. "Shall we go home?" Git said as he held out his hand. Remy nodded as he took his hand. The walk felt longer than before. Remy walked in without thanking him. Just wait, Remy. Git though as Remy went inside. Things will be all right... I hope...

Remy couldn't sleep. He was too anxious. This is gonna be a long week for me and Git, Remy thought as he rolled around his bed. Because he couldn't fall asleep, he tried to drink a glass of tea and going back to bed, but that didn't work either. He yawned so many times, but his brain didn't let him sleep.

Git was still walking back, very slowly. He had a lot of stuff going on in his mind. He couldn't help but keep nervously touching his tag in his ear. He needed to think about what would be the best for their relationship. Neither of them wanted to break up with each other. What to do? Git thought as he started to pull his ear.

Meanwhile, at the colony, Emile was also anxious. He was walking back and forth. Ooh, I don't know what to do! What if he knows? What if I accidently tell him? Ooh, either way, this is bad! Just as he was too stressed, his father called in and said, "Emile, I need to talk to you." Emile gulped and sat next to his father.

"Yes?" Emile asked nervously. Oh, I hope he didn't figure it out.

"Have you noticed anything different from Remy?" Django asked.

"Wh- what are you talking about?" Emile asked hesitantly. Does he know? It sounds like he knows that Remy and Git are in a relationship!

"You know," Django started, "Even when he opened the bistro, he still argued with me at one point, whether it would be about stealing and eating other garbages, but last Saturday, he did not. So I've been wondering if he had any special change." Emile gulped as he shuddered. He tightened his lips together to try to hide the shuddering. But he was shaking so aggressively that Django noticed it. "Why are you shaking?" Django asked suspiciously, "You must know something." Emile shook his head aggressively, but Django did not take it. "Spit it out, Emile!"

"GAAAAAHHHHH!" Emile screamed, Django flinched, then Emile talked almost two times faster, "You can't blame anyone for this! Okay, I didn't know what was going on until yesterday! But I didn't want to tell you because I need to keep it a secret from Remy and Git so that they can date in peace and-" Then he froze and put his hands over his mouth. Django sat in disbelief.

"They. Are. What?" Django asked, trying to not freak out. Emile shrugged in fear. "They. Are. Dating?" Although Django didn't seem to be too angry to burst, Emile tried to not look at him in his eyes. Emile nodded very weakly.

From a distance, Git was hearing the whole thing. Oh great, he thought, it came faster than I expected. Then he went back into his room sneakily so the Django wouldn't see him.

Next day, Remy worked unpleasantly. He got zero sleep last night because of how anxious he was. Thankfully, he did not make any mistakes until the lunch break, but he could still not hide his stress. When he is, he doesn't work as enthusiastically as any other days. Colette and Linguini didn't realize how he felt, which Remy found glad about, because he doesn't want them to know about it either. During the lunch break, Remy quietly chewed some cheese and pieces of bread. While he was eating, Emile walked in. Emile needed to tell him what just happened last night.

"I told Git already this morning," Emile said cautiously, "I confessed, I'm really sorry. Truly I am. I didn't mean to tell dad, but he noticed that you changed and I was so scared that it just slipped out of my mouth..."

"We knew this was going to happen," Remy replied, "You don't have to be so sorry. I'm just, uh, going to hope for the good." Then Emile exited. After few minutes Emile left, Django came in to talk to Remy. Remy pretended to not notice. Django calmly approached to Remy.

"Son, we need to talk after work. Be at our colony as soon as possible," Django said without any emotion. Remy nodded understandingly. Then Django left the bistro. Although Remy felt a little anxious, he felt a little bit of relief after how calmly his father reacted. But he may have just acted that way to make him feel a little ease during his work. When the lunch break was over, Remy went back to work even though he did not finish his food. When Colette and Linguini walked into the kitchen, they saw Remy's leftovers.

"Will you be okay, little chef?" Linguini asked, concerned, "You hardly touched your food."

Remy nodded weakly.

"Are you sure you're not gonna finish your food?" Colette asked worriedly.

Remy nodded again, even weaker this time.

Luckily, he was able to avoid the mistakes before and during the dinner rush. He thought cooking would make him feel better, but until he knows how his dad is going to react, he can't relax. When the dinner rush was over, Remy lied down as he gave out a sigh of both relief and anxiety. Linguini and Colette walked up to him as they were both concerned about Remy's condition.

"Little chef," Linguini started, "I don't know what you're going through, but I hope everything works out fine in the end."

"Me too," Colette added, "If you don't feel well, you can always take a day off. It won't hurt to cut the hours for few days."

Remy shook his head, indicating that he did not want to take a day off.

"All right," Linguini said.

"Whatever works for you," Colette added.

"See you later, little chef," Linguini and Colette both said encouragingly.

After making sure that they left, Remy headed out and went to the colony. Before going in, he took a deep breath. Then he started to walk in nervously. His dad, Emile, and Git were already sitting at one table. Emile was trying to avoid eye contact from both Git and Remy. Remy slowly took a seat across from his father.

"So..." Django started this with a calm tone but a little disappointed facial expression, "I heard both of you are in a relationship. Am I correct?"

Remy and Git both nodded as both of their heads were down.

"OUT! OUT! OUT OF MY SIGHT! BOTH OF YOU DON'T COME TO THE COLONY EVER AGAIN!" Django rose and screamed like he never did before. Remy and Git zipped out of Django's sight and escaped the dome of Django's aura of fury. He sat down and breathed heavily. Emile quietly ran away to the colony. He wanted to say that his dad did not need to kick his little brother out just for being different than the rest of the clan. However, Django was so furious that Emile became too scared to talk to him.

When Remy and Git arrived in front of the apartment, they decided to sit on the stairs to think and analyze the situation for a moment. As Remy's head was filled with complication and confusion, Remy's eyes started to fill with tears. He weeped as he placed his head on his palm. Git embraced him, trying to soothe him.

"What are we gonna do now...?" Remy asked through his tears.

"Shh... sh... we'll be okay... I promise," Git said, still embracing Remy.
