Rapunzel in Neverland

The young woman's blue eyes were sparkling with tears that threatened to soak her pretty face. "How could she?", she murmured, staring at the now empty room around her. Prince Frederick, the first person that came to her lonely tower and became her friend, was gone. The girl was used to the evil witch that kept her captive all of her life treating her with no kindness or sympathy, so the fact that she cut her beautiful blonde hair as punishment for using it as a rope to let him climb up to her window was no surprise.

But she never expected that awful woman to take Frederick away through an evil spell that would make him forever wander a place where he had never been before, his memory erased. The mare thought of the man she secretly loved, alone and frightened in a faraway land made her heart ache.

*Don't worry, Rapunzel!", tweeted Jeremy, the little bluebird that was Rapunzel's only company all these years. "We'll figure a way to get out of here and save Prince Frederick!"

"But how, Jeremy?", asked a very sad Rapunzel, when suddenly... a distant sweet sound that resembled a bell echoed through the room. Rapunzel and Jeremy turned to the direction of the sound only to find out it was actually coming from within the mirror! There, in the depths of the reversed world of reflection, stood the most magnificent little creature they had ever seen.

"A fairy!", gasped Rapunzel, staring at the creature's silvery dragonfly wings, green leaf-dress and pointy ears. She had read stories with fairies, but never had she expected to see a real one. The petite lady came out of the glass with a splash and as she walked on Rapunzel's desk, pixie dust followed her every step.

"Hey, how did you get here?", asked Jeremy in awe and curiosity. "How did you get inside the mirror? And how did you then come out of it? And how-"

His ocean of questions was cut by the magical being, that started moving her lips, yet all that came out was the same bell sound. Rapunzel stared at her carefully, trying to understand her through lip-reading.

"Hmmm... Are you saying you know where Frederick is?" The fairy nodded. "Then please, take me there and help me save him!" At the poor girl's plea, the fairy nodded once again, an excited yet somewhat mischievous smile gracing her porcelain face. Rapidly, she fluttered her wings and was soon flying in circles around Rapunzel, graceful as a ballerina. Rapunzel was looking at her confused yet enchanted by the shiny pixie dust that was now falling like a gentle rain all around her.

Jeremy too attempted to approach this pixie dust circle, but he only ended up sneezing and fluttering his own wings clumsily as he fell backwards. Rapunzel let out a chuckle at her friend's interaction with the magical substance, when suddenly she realized she was no longer standing on the floor but rather... floating! "I'm flying!", she exclaimed.

"Yes!", Jeremy shouted happily after recovering from his accident. "You can fly just like me! This is incredible! We can finally leave this tower and search for Prince Frederick! Woohoo!", he tweeted flying around her, just like the fairy was doing. However, the latter stopped her aerial dance, when she heard what the bluebird said. She flew in front of his face, her own face serious as she shook her head in disagreement. "Why not?", asked Jeremy, confusion written all over his birdy features.

The fairy flew in front of the window, pointing at the beautiful sunset that was painting the sky orange and shook her head again. She then flew to the mirror's direction, pointing at it instead.

"We have to go through the mirror, don't we? Is that where Frederick is?", asked Rapunzel and she was once again met with a nod. The young woman was scared; she had never been outside and now not only did she have to go through this process for the first time, but also she wouldn't go to the lavender fields or the beautiful city she could see through her window. Oh no, instead she would have to go through a mirror to a completely unknown, probably dangerous place. For a moment she stood there, trembling in fear. But then she remembered Frederick; how kind he was, how he promised to release her from her prison and show her all the exciting places he had visited during his travels and lastly, how much she had grown to love him.

She took a courageous step forward. "Alright, let's do this", she said and the fairy stepped on the desk one last time. She walked through the glass until half her body disappeared inside its now illuminating surface. She turned back and offered her right hand to Rapunzel, inviting her to follow along. The human shyly touched her index finger to the tiny hand and before she knew it, she was pulled inside the light.

"Hey! Wait for me!", yelled Jeremy as he flapped his wings behind them.

---

Rapunzel had never experienced such freedom before! As she traveled through a kaleidoscope of bright rainbow colors, she felt as light as a feather. The wind's cool touch on her face, the way it ruffled her now short hair and pink and white dress was simply fantastic! She didn't know how much time she spent inside that colorful bridge across worlds, yet when she finally felt heavier, she could smell sea salt and was soon greeted by the sight of a sandy beach with tall palm trees. A glorious ship was docked there, its black flag adorned with an X made of bones and a skull on top being whipped by the wind. The fairy was floating next to her head and soon Jeremy arrived too.

"Man, I'm gonna lose all the worms I had for breakfast!", he nagged dizzily, then his peck dropped. "Hey, is that a real pirate ship?"

The fairy nodded and Rapunzel and Jeremy noticed the furious glare she sent to the vessel. They were about to ask why she looked so angry, when a commanding raspy voice made them freeze.

"Ahoy, ye new swabbie! Can't ye load these crates faster?"

"Y-Yes, sir!", replied a quieter voice and Rapunzel's heart sank, as she immediately recognized it.

"Frederick...", she whispered and as she flew closer to the ship, she saw none other than her prince on the deck. The state he was in though, was terrible; his attire was ragged and dirty and he looked extremely tired as he struggled to lift some heavy wooden crates, all while a bunch of pirates were laughing at him, not raising a single finger to help him. The worst of all, his eyes looked empty, as if he were lost. Rapunzel felt tears sting her eyes once more.

The man who spoke first, a fearsome and imposing pirate with a red coat, a feathered hat, which clearly showed his status of authority as captain of the ship and an iron hook replacing his left hand, spoke again. "That old hag said ye'd be useful, but how can ye help me get rid of that pesky Peter Pan and his lads if ye be slow as a sea slug!?"

Rapunzel's blood boiled as anger rushed through her. Thus it was the evil witch who not only took Frederick away, but also made a deal with this equally evil man to make his life miserable. Unable to remain silent, despite her fear or her two companions' attempts to stop her, she flew directly before the captain. "Leave him alone!', she shouted louder than ever before.

He was more than surprised at the unexpected appearance of a flying woman commanding him. "Outta me way, lass!", he commanded back. "This here lad be the newest mate on me crew, so I can order him about as much as I please!"

"You cannot do this! He's a prince!"

"A prince, ye say? Aye, if he be a prince, then I be the little mermaid!" His fellow-pirates let out a rumble of laughter at his joke and only Frederick stood silent. Unamused, Rapunzel landed on the deck and ran to him.

"Frederick!", she called but he seemed unable to recognize even his own name. "Please, don't you remember me? It's me, Rapunzel!", she pleaded, but his face remained emotionless. Tears streamed down her cheeks. "Please come back to me, Frederick! I... I love you!", she confessed between sobs and kissed him tenderly. And so powerful was the magic of her true love's kiss, that it managed to break the witch's spell in an instant! Frederick blinked in confusion.

"Rapunzel?', he spoke, his voice lively and filled with emotion for his beautiful princess. "What happened? Where are we?" The girl was about to explain, when an angry 'arrr!' interrupted them. The couple turned to find the entire pirate crew surrounding them with menacing glares.

"Arrr! Ye troublesome wretch! Ye've gone and wrecked me shiny new treasure!", growled the captain and approached them threateningly with his large sword in hand.

Remembering what occured before, the prince quickly drew out his own sword. "No one talks to Rapunzel like that!", he shouted. "It's time somebody taught you a lesson, 'little mermaid'!" The use of his own joke against him, infuriated the captain and he attacked Frederick, their swords crossing fiercely, shining in the afternoon sun.

"Yeah, go prince-boy!", Jeremy cheered, but the fairy could tell how exhausted he was from all the hard work his 'crewmates' forced him to do and how this fight wouldn't last long. She winked at a worried Rapunzel and flew around the pirate, casting her magic close to him without him noticing. Just at the moment where the evil captain was about to defeat the prince, he felt himself being lifted from the deck and soon he was unwillingly flying above the sea.

"No! No! Don't be tossin' me into the briny deep! Cursed pixie dust!", was all that came out of his mouth before he fell face first into the clear blue water.

Relieved, Rapunzel ran into Frederick's arms and this time he welcomed her with a warm hug and twirl her in the air. Before the other pirates' wide-open eyes, the couple abandoned the ship along with the fairy and the bluebird. They had made it! They had each escaped their imprisonment through the help of each other. Now they were free to go where they wanted to. And as you might imagine, they lived happily ever after!
