- Chapter Twenty-Eight -

THE MONSTER AND THE BOY

Baekhyun's p.o.v.

The next morning was Baekhyun's father's court date. Baekhyun woke up with a nasty feeling in his stomach and his mouth was cottony and both his forehead and hair were slick with sweat. He felt horrible, and he knew he probably looked it too. He sighed heavily and rubbed his face before turning over onto his stomach and burying his face in a pillow. He laid there silently for a moment, mentally yelling at himself to get out of bed. Baekhyun had many things to do today. For instance, he diffidently had to shower, and he had to see his father before his trial — Baekhyun dreaded that the most.

When Baekhyun was in the shower, he didn't know why, but every bad thought came crashing down on him. The weight of it was so heavy it knocked him over and he ended up curled on the floor of the shower, shying away from the sting of the water as it burned his skin. Baekhyun continued to let the water run until it turned cold as ice because he didn't want to shut it off and worry Chanyeol because he hadn't left the bathroom. But when Baekhyun had gotten control over his breathing, he stood up and grabbed the towel from the rack and wrapped it around his waist. He wiped the condensation off the mirror and looked at his reflection. His face stared back at him — but it was a strangers face, this face was downcast with dark circles under their eyes, and their eyes . . . their eyes were empty, lightless. Baekhyun sucked in a ragged breath and bit his lip against a sob as he wiped his eyes and rubbed a hand over his face in an attempt to compose himself before he pulled the door open and walked into the bedroom. When Baekhyun walked into the bedroom, he noticed Chanyeol wasn't there. Baekhyun sighed both from sadness and relief; sadness because Baekhyun really needed him, and relief because at the same time Baekhyun didn't want Chanyeol to see him so broken. Sighing again, Baekhyun started to get dressed, pulling on a white turtle neck sweater — much like Chanyeol's — that had sweater paws, and a pair of light blue skinny jeans. Baekhyun rubbed the towel through his hair before just pushing it all back with his hands, then he huffed as he dropped onto the bed and laid back; he legs hanging over the edge.

Baekhyun had his eyes closed and was trying to block out the world when he heard the door click open followed by the sweetest, deepest voice he'd ever heard. He felt the bed dip down beside him and a hand brush lightly over his forehead followed by, "Baek, I know today is going to suck, so I have something for you. I hope it helps . . ." Baekhyun peeked his eyes open and glanced up at Chanyeol, who was sitting beside him with worry etched all over his face. Baekhyun sat up and noticed the black bag in Chanyeol's hand. "Close your eyes, Baek," Chanyeol murmured as he reached into the bag. Baekhyun closed his eyes and then he felt Chanyeol putting something around his neck. "Okay, open your eyes . . ."

Baekhyun opened his eyes and glanced at Chanyeol before peering down at what he had put around his neck. It was a silver pendant with the most intricate engraving of a phoenix. Baekhyun lightly touched it before glancing up at Chanyeol, his eyes glassy as Chanyeol murmured, "It was my grandmother's, and she believed it kept everything bad at bay — that it protected her." Chanyeol glanced up to meet Baekhyun's eyes and said, "And now I want you to have it." Baekhyun bit his bottom lip as tears glossed over his eyes and he murmured, "Thank you, Chanyeol, it means so much," as he wrapped his arms around Chanyeol's neck. Chanyeol smiled faintly and muttered, "Anything for you, Baekhyun."

Around eleven in the afternoon, Chanyeol and Baekhyun were waiting at the police station to see Baekhyun's father. Baekhyun kept playing with the phoenix necklace Chanyeol's gave him. It had been a small, sweet gesture, and just the thought had Baekhyun smiling.

It was another five minutes until someone approached them and said Mr. Byun wouldn't be accepting their visit. Baekhyun quickly stood up in reply and said in a too loud tone, "And why the hell not!? He owes me, and the least he could do is talk to his only son!" Chanyeol had stood up the moment Baekhyun jumped from his seat, incase he had to restrain Baekhyun, and lightly he touched Baekhyun's arm and murmured, "You shouldn't push it." Baekhyun just shrugged off Chanyeol's hand and said, "No Chanyeol, he fucking owes me this! He owes me an explanation, and I'm not leaving until I get it!"

Chanyeol bit his lip and gently touched Baekhyun's wrist, turning him around and lightly cupping his cheeks as he murmured, "Baekhyun, he doesn't want to talk and we can't do anything without getting in trouble," Chanyeol tried reasoning with him. Baekhyun just roughly pushed Chanyeol away as he turned back to the warden and demanded, "Take me to him!" The warden blinked in surprise at Baekhyun's utter disregard and said, "Sir, I'm sorry, but I can't do that." Baekhyun was furious, and he honestly didn't understand his sudden behavior, but he was just so angry. Baekhyun could feel his rationality slipping away as suddenly he made an attempt to run around the warden. But thank God, Chanyeol was faster. Chanyeol seized Baekhyun around the waist and swung him back as he struggled in Chanyeol's arms. Chanyeol was completely bewildered by Baekhyun's behavior. Never in all the time Chanyeol's known him has he acted so adamantly without a care of the consequences — because their was going to be consequences. "Sir, if you don't calm down I'm going to have to ask you to leave!" the warden said sternly. "I'm NOT fucking leaving!" Baekhyun yelled in reply and struggled even harder. When the warden made a move to remove Baekhyun from the station, Baekhyun kicked out at him, his booted foot connecting with his knee. He fell backwards onto the floor.

Chanyeol's jaw dropped and he gasped in surprise as he said, "Fuck Baekhyun, what are you doing!?" as the officer stood up with a stony expression and took Baekhyun from Chanyeol's arms, slapping handcuffs around his wrists. Before Baekhyun was taken out of the room, he said in a low voice, "I'm getting answers." Chanyeol didn't get a chance to reply as Baekhyun was being taken from the room, and disappeared around a corner.

Chanyeol raked a hand through his hair and clenched his fist in anger as he hissed, "Shit Baekhyun, what the hell are you doing?" Then Chanyeol pulled out his phone.

"Hello?" answered the other line.

"I need your help," Chanyeol said frantically.

"Shit, with what?" they asked.

"Baekhyun just got arrested," Chanyeol replied.

. . . .

The warden threw Baekhyun into a ceil directly across from his father's, and with a huff of exasperation Baekhyun stomped towards the edge of his ceil and kicked the bars as he shouted, "Why the hell did you refuse to talk to me!?" His father just looked up Baekhyun curiously — confused about why he was hearing his sons voice. But then he saw that Baekhyun, too, was behind bars and a sickly grin split across his face as he asked, "Oh, did my whore of a son finally get catch in the field?" Fury bubbled inside Baekhyun as he hissed, "You son of a bitch! You always knew about that you never did anything!? You're my father, you were suppose to take care of me! What happened that made you hate me so much!? That you hired freaking Yixing to kill me!?"

Baekhyun's father stood up slowly and approached the bars, causing Baekhyun to take a step back. "You want to know why I hate you?" he whispered. "Well then, let me enlighten you," he hissed as lunged at the bars and made a grab for Baekhyun. Baekhyun gasped and stumbled backwards, hitting the opposite wall as his father spat, "I hate you because you ruined everything. We use to have a good life, Baekhyun, your mother and I — until you came along. You ruined everything. You killed her!"

Tears stung Baekhyun's eyes as he whispered, "No, I didn't. It wasn't my fault."

"Liar!" he screamed. "She's dead because of you!"

"I didn't do it!" Baekhyun screamed back.

"Yes, you did, and I'll hate you forever. And if I get out, I won't stop until you're dead!" he hissed.

Tears were streaming down Baekhyun's cheeks as he sunk to the floor and continued to gasp, "I didn't do it. I didn't kill her." Baekhyun stayed in his crouch position with his head in his arms until he heard his ceil door click open, followed by Chanyeol's voice. His voice was full of emotion: concern, relief, happiness . . .

Baekhyun glanced up from his arms, his eyes red from crying. He saw Chanyeol rushing into the ceil, then he pulled Baekhyun into his arms and hugged him tightly. He gently touching Baekhyun's cheeks as he kissed him then murmured, "Baekhyun, never ever do that again." Baekhyun sniffled and buried his head in Chanyeol's shoulder as he whispered, "I'm so sorry, and it wasn't worth it."

As they were leaving, Baekhyun's father said sweetly, "See you soon, Baekhyunnie." Baekhyun cringed and squeezed his eyes shut as Chanyeol replied with, "See you in the fucking chair!" And they were leaving, finally driving home until they had to go to the court house in the next hour or so.

As they were sitting on the couch, Chanyeol gently caressed Baekhyun's cheek with his thumb and asked, "Do you want to talk about it?" Baekhyun shook his head numbly and Chanyeol nodded. "When you're ready then," he murmured.

Baekhyun sighed and a single tear fall down his cheek as he whispered, "How did you get me out?" Chanyeol ran his fingers soothingly through Baekhyun's hair and kissed his temple, then murmured, "I called Sehun. His father is the sheriff. He dropped the charges." Baekhyun nodded and murmured, "That's good, I guess." Chanyeol's heart cracked as he gently placed a finger beneath Baekhyun's chin and turned his head in his direction, whispering, "Baekhyun, what did he say to you...?"

More tears filled Baekhyun's eyes as he murmured, "He blames me." Chanyeol wiped away a tear with his thumb as he murmured, "What does he blame you for?" Baekhyun sucked in a ragged breath and hoarsely whispered, "My mother." Chanyeol's brow pinched and murmured, "Baekhyun, I don't understand. What about your mother?" Baekhyun rubbed his face and murmured, "My father blames me for her death." Chanyeol became anger and he asked a little too harshly, "How can he blame you?"

"Because . . ." Baekhyun whispered, "she died giving birth to me." Chanyeol felt his heart cracking even more and he murmured, "You don't blame yourself do you?" Baekhyun shook his head and muttered, "No, but I can understand why he blames me." Chanyeol's brow pinched and he slide a hand into Baekhyun's hair as he said furiously, "Baekhyun, something like that isn't your fault. You were a baby! Never blame yourself. Your father is just angry and upset that he lost his wife, but he never should have blamed you." Baekhyun sniffled and locked his arms around Chanyeol's neck as he whispered, "Thank you, Chanyeol."

"Of course, Baekhyun, anything for you," Chanyeol softly whispered.

"I love you, Chanyeol."

"I love you too, Baekhyun."

An hour later, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, his parents, and Yoora were sitting in the court room, awaiting Mr. Byun's sentence. He sat in the front near the judge while the judge asked, "Mr. Byun, do you know why you're here today?" Baekhyun's father sought him out, and once he found Baekhyun sitting next to Chanyeol near the corner, he locked their eyes as he said, "I'm here today because I love the way it feels to break my sons skin beneath my fists." Baekhyun squeezed his eyes shut and slowly inhaled as Chanyeol's hand tightened around his and gasps filled the air. "Mr. Byun, you do realize everything you say goes on record and may or may not determine the length of your sentence?" Mr. Byun smiled manically as he purred, "I realize, but I just wanted my dear son to know how much I love him." The judge's brow pinched and muttered, "Ah, um . . . Mr. Byun, h-how old is your son?"

"He's an eighteen year old slut who like to do in fields where everyone can hear him—"

"That's enough!" the judge yelled as he banged down his gavel and called the court to order. Everyone was talking in hushed whispers, and some people were throwing glances Baekhyun's way. Baekhyun's bottom lip started to wobble and he bit down on it to keep from sobbing as he hide his face in Chanyeol's chest, tears soaking Chanyeol's shirt as Baekhyun silently cried. Chanyeol was in so much pain, having to hear everything Baekhyun's father said and not being able to do anything about it, and to have people looking at Baekhyun with disgust or pity made it even worse. But they both knew this had been his plan — Baekhyun's father would destroy him in any way possible, and since he couldn't do it personally he'd put false information into people's head and they'd do it for him. A tear fell down Chanyeol's cheek as he hugged Baekhyun close and kissed the top of his head, rubbing his back soothingly.

In the end, Baekhyun's father got ten years, it may have seemed like Baekhyun won, but really his father had, and he was the one going to prison for mentally and physically abusing his son....
