Bad Luck in the Rain
He could feel the storm coming. It hadn't broken yet, but there was a tension in the air that was almost visible. The smell of the city had changed to that of water waiting to fall. If he wanted to finish his run before the rain fell, he'd have to hurry.
Well, ninja were very good at moving fast when needed. He considered that for a moment before deciding it wasn't needed. Fights wouldn't stop for rain, as he had good cause to know, and if he wasn't able to deal with it, he wouldn't be worth anything as a ninja. So he kept his pace steady as he leapt and raced over New York's rooftops. It was almost like having his own playground, or the closest he'd ever come. Giant mutant turtles weren't exactly welcome on actual playgrounds.
The first drops of water hit him as he ran. More would soon be falling and it wouldn't be long before he was soaked. Not really a bad thing for a turtle. He watched the storm. It was beautiful in its own way, starting with the soft pattering and within moments raining in earnest. Mentally calculating the time he'd been out so far, he figured another few miles ought to do it.
His senses tightened suddenly. Eyes were on him. The rush of fear was quickly capped. That emotion was useless at present. Who was out here with him? Chances were high it was a foe. Should he attack now or-
A light footfall behind him. Deliberate? He certainly hoped so, or he'd be up most the night re-enforcing the importance of stealth to this ninja. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the dark green skin of his brother and smirked. Raph had fallen into pace with him for the time being. What was Raph doing out here though? Jogs weren't Raph's idea of a good time.
Their eyes met and Raph gave him one of those cocky grins that always seemed to get under his skin before pushing for a bit more speed. Well, if that's the way Raph wanted to play it...he was game. He matched Raph's pace before leaping up, putting more distance between them.
They didn't fall into their usual taunts. Whether that was because Raph understood he was going for stealth, or just because they both knew he was on the end of his workout and didn't have as long to compete, he wasn't sure. It was nice though, having someone else with him. He could concentrate on the fact that back-up was right next to him instead of wonder what sounds the rain would muffle. Not that he didn't listen for the sounds anyway, but with Raph nearby, he wouldn't be jumping at sounds that meant nothing because he focused on them too hard.
A silent signal had both slowing, cooling down from the run, before leaping off a roof and making their way down to the alley below. Raph landed first and moved to open the manhole cover. His landing was quieter, a fact he took a small measure of pride in. But he should have been faster. They ducked into the sewers and both relaxed slightly. Home turf was always a good thing.
He still didn't know why Raph had shown up though. "Plans with Casey canceled?" Rain didn't stop crime, but it slowed the types a human and a turtle could put down. Raph shrugged.
"Figured ya could use some company. Ya don't exactly got the best of luck in rain."
Not the response he'd expected from Raph, but it touched him. They might argue and fight often, but they were still brothers. Even if some of his "bad luck" in rain had been partly Raph's fault. "Thanks, bro."
They exchanged a look that said more than they'd ever verbalize before heading home.
