lEt's GEt cOntROvErSIaL (mini series) part 1: AAVE
Heyy so I have some controversial opinions
Lets talk about them, shall we?
First up
African American Vernacular English
Or AAVE
Formally known as Vernacular Black English (VBE)
Is a type od dialect typically spoken by African Americans.
It is not to be confused with slang language.
I am black and personally speak AAVE. But I have one thing to say.
Can we NOT bash non- black (poc or otherwise) people for using AAVE?? Like??
Hear me out okay
Here is a list I found of AAVE terms that people will get mad if you say if you aint black
"What you as a non-black person shouldn’t be saying (this includes non-black poc):
killin it
-game too strong (i.e. eyebrow game too strong, etc.)
-ass (i.e. That’s some ignorant-ass shit.)
hella
turnt/turnt up/turn up/turn down for what
shade/throwin’ shade
ratchet (don’t be a smartass, the adjective not the object)
werk
yas
habitual “be” (i.e. they be killin it, he be walkin, bitches be like, etc.)
the thirst/thirsty
anything being “real” (i.e. the struggle is real, the thirst is real, etc.)
the struggle
on point (i.e. outfit is on point)
chill (as in got no chill)
side-eye
stank face
cray cray
-had me like
trippin’
boo/bae
imma be
do/dough/dat
gurl/boi
basic (as in basic bitch)
holla
finna (i.e. I’m finna do xyz)
tho/doe
reading/read
school/schooling
dope
fo sho/fo real
y’all
dig/dig it/ya dig/you dig
respect (i.e. respect man)
about that/here for that (i.e. I’m not about that life, I’m here for this)
tight (i.e. this shit got me tight)
giving life (i.e. Beyonce gives me life, black tumblr giving me life)
swag
goin’ through it"
When you think about it, alot of the words used in AAVE seem very normal in modern language right? I mean, alot of these words be so woven into the culture (especially through Twitter and meme culture) that it just seems normal. Like when I heard some people found non black folk saying terms like these offensive, I was confused and surprised because it seemed like the most normal thing. Especially in queer culture (werk, fierce, slay, shade, reading); especially drag culture.
Not to mention-- aren't we only dividing each other by putting up these unnecessary boundaries? Like,, in America we're supposed to be all "yay multiculturalism" and "we're all equal" and stuff,,, like I don't wanna come off as rude, but I'm gonna say it (and some of you may not like it but this is a vent book so I'm sorry.) The accomplishments in black history is not going to be eroded or erased because a white girl said "finna" people needa calm they asses down. If it was the N word, then I can understand where they were coming from. But,, y'all (not y'all but like,, people) need to realize that it's doing more harm then good. They wanna be all "Oh,, we're all one people in the eyes of god and we should respect each other equally!" But y'all are making into an "its us against them" situation. It's really not that deep. Slavery is not gonna come back because a white boy be rappin using similar terms. At the end of the god damn day, as long as nobody trying to hurt themselves or nobody else, we should be good, right? If I said this shit on Tumblr, bitches be like "wHy ARe YoU dEFenDinG ThEM???" Who's them?? We're all one god damn species. We bleed the same damn color. Bitches wanna say how we shouldn't judge against each other based on race or skin color bur when it come to white folk it's open season??? Uh no henny. Smells like bullshit. And yes. POC CAN BE RACIST. I've met plenty. I have some in my immediate and none immediate family and in my community. And YES. WOMEN CAN BE SEXIST. racism and sexism is the DISCRIMINATION, PREJUDICE AND/OR ANTAGONISM OF PEOPLE BASED ON RACE/SEX. so I hate seeing these tom foolery ass bitches on Tumblr saying this shit cuz it AINT T RUE
ALSO CAUSE SOME FOLK GREW UP IN THOSE TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTS SO;;
I rest my case. *drops mic*
