WWE's Women's Divisions + Intergender Wrestling

I typed some of this on my phone, so please excuse any typos.

Before I start: I'm only talking about the main roster women's divisions. I don't have a problem with the division in NXT. This is going to focus on Raw & SmackDown.

On Raw: there are currently 7 women that are part of Raw's women's division (8, if you count Summer Rae). Of these 7-8, only 4 ever get to be on TV or have title matches.

Alexa Bliss, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Nia Jax. They are each great in their own right. But they aren't the only women on Raw.

Emma is by far my favorite woman on the show. She's an amazing wrestler, and it's a shame that in her 5 years with the company, she hasn't held a title. When she's on TV, she's stuck in a squash match.

When Emma finally returned to TV after her injury (back in April), she was in a random, meaningless tag team match.

This past week, she was in a triple threat match against Alicia Fox and Sasha Banks (who is, arguably, the most over woman on Raw). She got a huge pop when she came out, and an even louder one when she got a near fall. People obviously love Emma, and I think WWE should #GiveEmmaAChance.

Mickie James is a future Hall of Famer. She's a great wrestler + is always entertaining to watch. However, not counting her match against Asuka, WWE has not been using her to her full potential.

SmackDown didn't know what to do with her, and Raw has somehow done less with her.

Dana Brooke isn't the best wrestler ever, but how can she improve if she never has matches? She has the potential to be really good, but WWE never does anything with her.

Summer Rae has been injured since the draft, but I think she might be cleared to compete? (Not 100% sure)

Summer is such a good heel + isn't a bad wrestler.

Alicia Fox is one of the few women left (the others being Nikki Bella and Natalya) from the Divas era, and she is absolutely fantastic. Of the Divas who were signed based on looks, and not ability, she is one of the best.

Sadly, she was stuck with Noam Dar for a long time (and while I didn't hate them together, I do wish it hadn't happened), and when she wasn't on 205 Live, she either wasn't on Raw, or she was losing in any matches she was in.

It sucks to think that with how long she's been with the company, she's only held the Divas Championship once, and probably won't get to hold the current women's title.

I get that WWE like Alexa, Sasha, Bayley, and Nia. But you can't just have a division of 4 women. Especially when there are extremely talented women on the roster not being used.

Bayley + Sasha are amazing wrestlers, and Alexa + Nia are improving, but they need to focus on the other women, too. I'm getting tired of the same matchups on Raw and at PPVs.

Quick Update: I wrote the above before Bayley was injured. Now that she is, what is the WWE going to do? They had two top heels (Alexa + Nia) and two top faces (Sasha + Bayley). With her gone, they're down to one face, and they haven't built anyone else up to even be considered champion-material.

On SmackDown: there are 7 women on this roster (8, if you count Nikki Bella, and 9, if you count Maria Kanellis).

The problem with SmackDown is that there aren't really any storylines.

After the draft, SmackDown was really good with storylines. We got Becky/Alexa, Nikki/Carmella, Nikki/Nattie, Becky/Mickie, and Alexa/Naomi.

Elimination Chamber also had three women's matches, a first in the WWE (even if one of those matches ended in a double countout).

But ever since the shakeup, there hasn't been much discernible storylines. All the faces hate all the heels.

Since the draft, there have been a ton of multiwoman matches. I get that last year's SummerSlam had one (they didn't have a title yet), and Survivor Series obviously had one, but all the other PPVs? They weren't necessary.

This past PPV, Battleground, had a 5-way elimination match, and Naomi (THE CHAMPION!!) wasn't even in it.

Don't even get me started on how the first women's Money in the Bank match was won by a man.

I guess there's some sort of Naomi/Carmella feud going on, but it's only somewhat happening. Naomi/Nattie is only happening because Nattie won a multi-person match.

If Carmella doesn't cash in at SummerSlam, then who does Naomi feud with next? Guess we'll have to have another 5-way match to figure it out!

I feel bad for Naomi. Since winning her title at WrestleMania (which was such a great moment), she hasn't had many chances to defend it. She didn't even get a match at the last PPV, and she was stuck having matches with Lana (who should NOT be on the main roster) before it.

While SmackDown does use all of its women, I can't say they use them well (mostly since the shakeup).

Now, onto the next part of the rant.

I like intergender wrestling.

However, I only like it as much as the commentators do.

This particular rant is the result of two matches I watched, and the huge difference that commentary made for both of them.

The first match I'll be talking about: The World's Cutest Tag Team (Joey Ryan & Candice LeRae) vs. The Young Bucks - Guerrilla Warfare Match.

You more than likely know the match I'm talking about. If not, it's on YouTube, and is one of the only full PWG matches you can find on there.

The commentators for this match were Excalibur and Kevin Steen (or Owens, I guess). I might be wrong, but I think this particular event was KO's last PWG (maybe indie?) appearance. If that's wrong, please let me know.

Anyway, I absolutely love listening to Excalibur on commentary. He's entertaining, he makes every match feel big, and he knows his stuff (usually because he looks it up on Wikipedia during the match). And Kevin is great at everything, so obviously, he was great during this match.

There were very few times during this match where they reminded us that Candice was a girl taking on two guys. They were never like, "Yeah, Candice is good, but she's a woman."

When she took that kick to the face with the thumbtacks, they started freaking the fuck out, as one does when something like that happens. However, they weren't doing it because "oh no, a woman is bleeding!" They were doing it because "what the fuck just happened?? That's insane!!"

If one of them ever brought up that Candice is a girl, the other would remind him that she is still one tough cookie. She even got "she's hardcore!" chants when it ended.

That's the kinda stuff I like to hear during an intergender match. Even if the woman isn't taking insane moves like the thumbtacks, they should still make sure we know they're equal in the ring.

Now onto the second match: Roppongi Vice vs. Adam Cole & Britt Baker - Wrestle Circus Big Top Tag Team Championship Match

This particular match had two guys on commentary: Rich Brennan (who used to commentate for NXT a little while ago) and some dude named Lance Hoyt or something like that.

Let me preface this by saying I was watching this show live, and I had gone to do some things, so when I came back, I started in the middle of this match.

So when I put it on, Trent had Britt in position for the Crunchy (his finisher). Everyone is freaking out for some reason (literally everyone: Adam Cole, Rocky, the commentators, the crowd). Everyone (including Rocky) is telling him not to do it.

Then he does it.

And everyone is mad at him for some reason? I mean, obviously Adam was mad at him because she's his tag team partner.

But that Lance guy on commentary is super annoyed at Trent for hitting Britt with that move, saying that she's a girl and he shouldn't have hit her with it.

Rich is trying to explain to him that she obviously knew the risks she was taking when she agreed to be in the match. In the ring, it doesn't matter if she's a girl; she's still a wrestler.

But Lance wasn't having it, and he absolutely ruined the match for me by continuing to remind us how horrible it is to hit your finisher on a woman.

That's what I don't like in an intergender match. Like, did he think that Britt didn't realize she was the only woman in the ring? She knows how intergender wrestling works.

The job of the commentators during an intergender match is to do one of two things: (1) constantly remind us of how tough the woman/women is/are whenever they're up against the guy; (2) don't constantly remind us that she's a woman, and that the man is obviously tougher than her, and that she's at a disadvantage just standing next to him.

My god, I hate that guy, and I wish he wouldn't do commentary.

Anyway, I think I'm ending this rant here. I'm sorry I didn't include links to those matches, but I'm lazy and didn't want to.

As promised, the next chapter will be about Mustafa Ali and how much I love him. :)
