NXT Takeover: San Antonio Review
I wasn't really sure what to expect going into Takeover, but I wasn't disappointed. It wasn't the best Takeover ever, but it was still pretty good.
Let's get started!
Eric Young vs. Tye Dillinger
Singles Match
Winner: Eric Young
WHY CAN'T TYE EVER WIN ANYTHING?
I expected Eric Young to win, since he had Sanity with him, but I was still sad when Tye lost. I hate seeing Tye lose.
People on Twitter were saying that now he can debut at the Royal Rumble and join the main roster, but I totally don't want that.
I do want to see him in the Royal Rumble, but I want him to stay in NXT after. That's what Sami Zayn did last year, and I would be cool with Tye doing it this year. I want to see him with the NXT Championship (HE DESERVES IT SO MUCH) and I'd love to see him beat Bobby Roode for it, especially since he's already beaten Tye twice.
Anyway, this match was really good and I liked it.
Roderick Strong vs. Andrade "Cien" Almas
Singles Match
Winner: Roderick Strong
Okay, so I missed pretty much all of this match because I got a phone call. I'm sure it was good though.
Also, I watch NXT every week, and I'm still not sure why Almas doesn't like Roddy? I'm not sure if I missed something, or I should've been paying more attention, or what it was, but I'm still a bit confused.
#DIY vs. Authors of Pain
NXT Tag Team Championship Match
Winners: Authors of Pain
I'M SO SAD
I wanted Gargano and Ciampa to win, and they didn't, and they don't have the titles anymore, and I'm so sad.
I don't like the Authors of Pain. At all. I haven't liked them since their debut, when they attacked American Alpha. I just don't see the appeal of them. They're big dudes with a guy who speaks in prophecies. Okay? And? What makes me want to be interested in you?
Before the match even started, I was hoping that if DIY lost, Gargano didn't take the pin. I was convinced that if he did, we would see DIY break up tonight and I didn't want that. My heart was already broken, I didn't want them taking anything else from me. Luckily (I guess?), Ciampa took the pin, and I took a sigh of relief.
I'm also sad because last year, every Takeover's match of the night was the tag title match, but this one wasn't nearly as good as all the ones we saw in 2016.
The match was good, but not great. And I just wish DIY were still champions and got a longer run with the titles.
Asuka vs. Nikki Cross vs. Peyton Royce vs. Billie Kay
NXT Women's Championship Fatal 4-Way Match
Winner: Asuka
This match was really awesome.
The women's division in NXT has felt a little off since the draft last year, but it definitely doesn't anymore. You've got viable contenders for this belt in the future in Nikki, Peyton, and Billie, and you even have Ember Moon, who wasn't in the match.
My favorite spot was definitely Billie and Peyton putting Nikki through a table. I also loved that kick from Peyton to Asuka near the end.
I feel like the match could've been a little longer, but other than that, it was great.
I don't really know why Billie didn't just pin Peyton, or vice versa, but I'm willing to overlook that because of how good this match was.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Bobby Roode
NXT Championship Match
Winner: Bobby Roode
THIS WAS MATCH OF THE NIGHT
10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND
It started out a little slow, and I was afraid it would be underwhelming, but it soon picked up and I was on the edge of my seat.
I'm typing this right after Takeover, so I'm not sure if there's been any news, but I'm so unsure about whether Nakamura is okay or not. The doctor coming out, and Roode not even attacking him made me think it was something serious, but they continued with the match.
I totally expected Nakamura to retain, so it was a nice surprise seeing Bobby Roode win. (This is definitely why Tye should stay in NXT for a little longer)
I loved their entrances, too. They were pretty great.
Seth Rollins
I was so thrown off by Seth showing up because I looked up and just went, "Wait, who is that?" Seth didn't even come to mind because he's not in NXT.
I thought it was cool seeing him in NXT because he knew Triple H would be there. It's his show. And I loved Triple H not even saying anything, just getting security to come out.
I feel like something is going to happen at the Rumble tomorrow, but I have no idea what. It's great.
All in all, this was a pretty great Takeover. You're probably tired of hearing me complain about DIY, so I won't.
The theme songs were great, and my brother even knew one, which is weird because he never knows NXT's theme songs. It was rap, which is what he listens to, and it just never dawned on me to ask if he knew it because I'd never heard of the artist before.
On the pre-show, Corey Graves said he was leaving NXT, which totally sucks, but he's being replaced by Nigel McGuiness, so it doesn't suck as bad. It won't feel the same without Corey tbh
Anyway, I won't waste any more of your time. Takeover was awesome.
