NXT Takeover: Orlando Review
I watched the first match, then had to go do something, and missed the next two matches, but I saw the final two. I've gone back since to watch the two that I missed, but that's why this isn't a next day review.
Anyway, let's get to it!
Sanity (Eric Young, Killian Dain, Alexander Wolfe, & Nikki Cross) vs. Tye Dillinger, Rodrick Strong, Kassius Ohno, & Ruby Riot
8-Person Tag Team Match
Winners: Sanity
Ruby Riot is everything I look for in a female Superstar. I love her, even after just one match. I love her look, her theme song, her name. She is literally the coolest person ever. I can't wait for a one-on-one Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross match.
So, when they announced that No Way Jose couldn't compete, my first thought was that Finn Balor was going to replace him. But then I realized that made absolutely no sense at all, and I was like, "Oh, it's probably going to be Kassius Ohno." Which it was.
For a match with so many people, I thought it was good! It was a lot of fun to watch, with a lot of cool spots.
I liked Ruby jumping onto someone's back, like Nikki does. I thought it was funny.
At one point, the crowd started chanting "Shave your back!" at Killian Dain, but I heard "Shane O'Mac" and I was super confused. xD
Anyway, this was a fun match to start the show EVEN THOUGH TYE GOT PINNED UGH
Also, they were super into Roderick Strong, so that was cool.
Andrade "Cien" Almas vs. Aleister Black
Singles Match
Winner: Aleister Black
I think Andrade "Cien" Almas is super cool. I love cocky heels, they're my favorite type of heel. I think that's why I think he's so great (plus, he's just an awesome wrestler).
With that said, Aleister Black is the single coolest person I have ever seen in my life. His entrance was so cool, and I'm in love with his theme song.
I loved that part where he was going to jump out of the ring, but Almas moved, so he just jumped off the rope into the ring, and sat down cross-legged. That was cool.
I just have one little complaint, but I need to make a comparison.
Ember Moon made her NXT debut at a Takeover. Going into it, a lot of people (including myself) had never seen her wrestle. When she hit the Eclipse, though, we knew it had to be her finisher. It's cool and devastating, and definitely looks like something that can end a match.
Aleister Black's finisher isn't all the exciting compared to something like that, so I personally think it made the match end rather abruptly. Considering half of his moves are kicks, it just looks like another kick to me. Maybe I just don't see the appeal of it, I don't know.
Anyway, I thought this was a super good match, and I love Aleister Black, and I can't wait to see what he does in NXT.
Authors of Pain vs. DIY vs. The Revival
Triple Threat Elimination Match for the NXT Tag Team Championships
Winners: Authors of Pain
Not only was this the match of the night, it was the match of the weekend (at least, within WWE). 10/10 would recommend.
There were so many spots that I loved in this match. I loved DIY and The Revival teaming up right at the beginning to take out AOP.
I loved how it took all 4 of them to put one Author of Pain (don't know which one) through a table. I loved that he even went through a table.
I loved Scott Dawson and Johnny Gargano both putting another Author in their submissions.
I loved when it was only DIY and The Revival in the ring (THE CROWD WAS SO LOUD WHEN IT HAPPENED), and Paul Ellering was just outside the ring, egging them on.
I loved when Johnny Gargano did DIY's finisher with Scott Dawson (he even did the beginning, with the pointing omg), and then Tommaso Ciampa did Shatter Machine with Dash Wilder.
I always love when Johnny Gargano does his spear through the ropes (even though it gets countered most of the time lmao), but I especially loved it this time BECAUSE HE ACTUALLY HIT SOMEONE AND WASN'T COUNTERED.
To focus on DIY (of course lmao)
Johnny hasn't worn his vest in a while, so I was glad he wore it. He's always wearing it when they show the little videos for Takeover matches (where they show the individual competitors, then it's like "AOP vs. DIY vs. The Revival" I'm not sure I'm even making sense lol sorry).
I'm convinced that if (...when...) DIY break up, Tommaso Ciampa will be the one to do end the team, so anytime he's the one who gets pinned instead of Johnny, I'm just super relieved, because he has no reason to turn on him now.
Honestly, I think AOP are starting to grow on me. With each match, they improve, so that's good, and they have really good finishers. I'm just a little upset that they had to beat DIY to get the titles.
I don't think this really counts as a "fair rematch" as they put it, for the titles since it was a triple threat. Since the next Takeover is next month, I think we might get DIY/AOP again in a fair rematch.
To end: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS MATCH.
Asuka vs. Ember Moon
NXT Women's Championship Match
Winner: Asuka
I really enjoyed this match. Asuka and Ember are two of the best wrestlers currently in WWE, so I knew it was going to be a good match.
A certain part of it reminded me of the Omega/Okada match at Wrestle Kingdom earlier this year (WATCH IT IF YOU HAVEN'T). In that match, they made a big deal about how Kenny Omega never hit the One Winged Angel, and that if he had, he probably would've won. In this match, they mentioned how devastating the Eclipse was, and how it got Ember the win in all her matches.
She never hit Asuka with the Eclipse. I feel like they'll have another match soon, and maybe she'll hit the Eclipse?
Bobby Roode vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
NXT Championship Match
Winner: Bobby Roode
This wasn't as good as their first match, but it was still good.
I'm hoping to see Nakamura on the main roster this week, maybe tonight on Raw, or tomorrow on SD?
I really want a Bobby Roode/Aleister Black feud because they are complete opposites and it would be great.
Personally, I don't think there was anything really memorable about the match, unless you count their entrances (because I loved that Bobby Roode had two pianists playing his song omg). But I still think it was a good match.
The very first Takeover I saw was Dallas last year, so I kinda unintentionally compare every other one to it. This one totally wasn't as good as that one, but I still really liked it. The tag team match was absolutely amazing + I love Ruby Riot and Aleister Black (and Tye Dillinger, but y'all already knew that).
I absolutely love Crown the Empire, so I was excited when they announced one of their songs as the theme song. :)
Anyway, Nakamura and The Revival are the only ones from this that I can see getting called up anytime soon (hopefully tonight or tomorrow).
And in case some of you didn't know, the next one will be NXT Takeover: Chicago next month, the same weekend as Backlash. Triple H tweeted it.
