NXT Takeover: Chicago Review
I have a lot of things to say about a certain match. Bet you can't guess which one.
I'm sorry it took so long to even type this up. It's been an extremely busy week + I didn't even get to watch Takeover live.
But I'm here now, so let's get on to the review!
Eric Young vs. Roderick Strong
Singles Match
Winner: Roderick Strong
I was really really into this match.
I loved Roddy coming out before it actually started, and taking out the other members of Sanity. That was smart.
Up until recently, I hadn't really been all that impressed with Roderick Strong. When he signed with NXT, I had heard all this great stuff about him, and then I finally saw him, and he was just meh.
When he faced Hideo Itami for the number one contender's spot, I finally understood the hype. Itami is cool and all, but I was more impressed by Roderick in that. And then he had this match with Eric Young, and I was even more impressed.
Everything he does is just really cool, I don't know how to explain it.
Sanity is also cool, and I'm always intrigued by them.
Roddy winning was unexpected, just because of the numbers game, but I really liked this match.
Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne
Singles match for the United Kingdom Championship
Winner: Pete Dunne
Holy shit was this match good.
There was so much to love about it, and if it wasn't for a later match, I probably wouldn't be able to shut up about it.
Last year, the NXT match that I always compared future matches to was Nakamura/Zayn. This year, it's definitely this.
The fact that Tyler Bate is the same age as me (20!) and he's having an absolutely amazing match is mind-blowing.
The crowd was super into it, too, and I feel like that made it so much better. The crowds don't react much to the cruiserweight division, and I was afraid that may happen with the UK division, but luckily, I don't think it is.
I think my favorite part might have been when Tyler was just spinning Pete around on his shoulders. He was so fast, it was crazy. Other wrestlers do spins like that, but none of them are that fast.
Pete Dunne is the new UK Champion, and that's pretty cool! I really like him, and I'm excited to see what he does as champion.
Asuka vs. Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross
Triple Threat match for the NXT Women's Championship
Winner: Asuka
This match was really interesting, and I really liked it.
Going into this, Asuka didn't really have a feud with Nikki or Ruby; they were feuding with each other, and this match just happened to be for the title. Normally, it would go one of two ways: Ruby and Nikki would team up against Asuka, or Ruby and Nikki would just fight each other, and Asuka would wait it out.
Instead, we got Nikki Cross being the crazy chick she is, and just beating up both of them. Everyone is her enemy.
I will say that I'm excited for the eventual Nikki Cross vs. Ruby Riot match in the future. When they were supposed to face each other on a weekly episode, they didn't, and fought outside the ring. I'm hoping this leads to a match with a stipulation (hopefully falls count anywhere or No DQ).
I love Asuka a lot, which is why I don't mind her super long reign. No one is on Asuka's level, so of course she is still champion.
I don't know if I have a favorite part of this match? Probably Asuka pinning both of them to win, just because it amused me.
Bobby Roode vs. Hideo Itami
Singles match for the NXT Championship
Winner: Bobby Roode
I haven't actually seen this match yet, but I've heard from literally everyone that it's really good.
So with that said, I'll check it out later and get back to y'all.
Authors of Pain vs. DIY
Ladder match for the NXT Tag Team Championships
Winners: Authors of Pain
SURPRISE I HAVE A LOT OF THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS MATCH
Before I get to the heartbreaking part, let's talk about the match.
I loved this match. I loved it a lot.
I liked when Gargano + Ciampa jumped out of the ring onto AOP, putting them through ladders.
I liked Johnny superkicking Paul Ellering. Then they showed him outside the ring later, just giving a thumbs down, frowning, and yelling.
I loved when an AOP was getting ready to hit Ciampa with a ladder, but Johnny PUSHED HIM OUT OF THE WAY AND TOOK THE SHOT.
I'd like to backtrack on an opinion I've given in previous Takeover reviews. I don't hate the Authors of Pain. I mean, I don't like them, but it's because they're heels, not because they don't entertain me.
This match + the last Takeover match (the triple threat) have proved to me that AOP are awesome. I love the Super Collider. Because they're so young, they can only go up from here, and I can't wait to see where they are in a few years. With that said, I still don't know which one is which, but whatever.
All right, now it's time to talk about after the match.
I've kinda already covered this in the last chapter of this book, but...
TOMMASO HOW COULD YOU
JOHNNY TOOK A LADDER FOR YOU AND YOU GO AND DO THAT TO HIM?
I read that Candice and Ciampa's wife were both ringside, and this happened, and they were both shocked, so I mean, you could've not done that.
Did y'all see Johnny's face right after he was attacked? He was so sad and confused, like, "what are you doing, Tommaso? Aren't we supposed to be friends?" And then he just had that look until the show ended, and it was the saddest thing.
I thought Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho breaking up was brutal, but this was far worse because these are my two favorite wrestlers, and NOW THEY'RE NOT FRIENDS ANYMORE.
Speaking of Chris Jericho, one of the theme songs for Takeover was "Judas" by Fozzy. There is a song about the man who BETRAYED JESUS and literally no one talked about how this could be foreshadowing. No one thought, "Hmm, I wonder if this song means something. Is there going to be a breakup?" I didn't even think of it until recently. (Okay, I say "no one" but maybe you did. Who knows?)
I already know that they're going to have the match of the year once they wrestle, but I'm still very sad.
They already faced each other once, in the first round of the Cruiserweight Classic. They were still friends then. Imagine how great + more painful their next match will be, now that they're not friends anymore.
People are saying that they can't wait for them to get back together, but how do we know they will? I think it'll all depend on this feud. Why did Tommaso do this? How does Johnny feel about it? We'll just have to wait, but for some reason, I don't think they're getting back together.
I would try ending this with something not sad, but I'm tired and don't want to.
The next episode of NXT is going to make me sad.
