Shorter Stories Get The Better Reviews?
The following rant is based off a true story.
To protect those who are involved, and to follow Wattpad's bullying policy, the names of the people involved will be taken out.
Before I begin I just want to quickly point out why I am doing this rant.
For the life of me, I can't keep things bottled up inside of me. I've tried it for years and it always ends badly. I NEED to let it out. I have to.
Sure talking to friends helps, but there's a tiny bit inside of you that still lingers. The thing that absolutely ticks you off. You're a bit calm now, but you're still not over it.
I'm starting this rant but to basically, in short, let it all out.
Okay.... here we go.
So lets say Person A has been writing a story for, lets say, almost a year. They've worked hard on it, corrected any spelling errors before publishing an update, receiving positive comments and a good amount of reads.
Person A feels so accomplished by this.
One day they stumble upon Person B who has been writing a review book, and is requesting people to send in their books for a review.
Person A decides to give it a try, and submits her story that she put so much work and sweat into.
After a few days of waiting, the review comes out.
Person A is so excited to find out what is in store!
So clicks on the link and reads the review.
I'll be using a different rating system for this rant. Now let's say it received a rating of.... 60/100.
Decent right? Sure. An acceptable number? Of course!
But the overall review however, doesn't seem to be sitting right with person A. Person A reads the review one more time, taking everything in slowly and clearly.
She compared the review with her book, looking for anything to improve, looking for anything she did wrong.
While Person A's writing has greatly improved since her other books before hand and during the process of writing her current book, she can't help but feel a little down.
She corrected the speech texts in the first few chapters, and seemed a bit better.
But Person B also stated that she seemed to use "?" and "!" with each other, like "?!".
When a writer does that, it's too express a character's complete, and utter shock of a situation. To emphasize a bit more in their tone when they are speaking.
However, according to Person B, this book isn't a comic book.
.... Are they saying that "?!" should only happen in comic books?
It sounds like it.
Here's where Person A gets a little defensive.
Maybe she does put in "?!" once in a while, but it doesn't JUST happen in comic books! Person A has seen it in things OTHER than comic books too you know!
So Person A comments on the update to let Person B know that they have fixed the speech text issue, the whole writing style deal, and asks Person B about the whole "?!" thing.
Person B just prefers it in comic books.
Sounds good?.... Well, sort of.
While the 60/100 is, satisfying, Person A can't help but feel it should have been 70, at most!
Person A decided to let it's readers know that the review for the book was released. Person A wanted them to let Person A know if they agree or disagree with the review.
Person A published the Authors Note and one person commented.
They commented with some things Person A could improve for future stories, and the commenter read the review and they thought Person B's review didn't quite make sense to the commenter. The commenter gave the book an 80/100.
Person A thanked the commenter for the review and took note of the improvements for the future.
So Person A decides to read Person C's review that was posted before her own.
Here's a quick comparison;
Person C's book at in between 10-20 parts.
Person A's book had in between 40-50 parts.
Person C's book recieved a perfect 100/100.
So.... what was Person A looking at?
The shorter the parts/story, the higher the rating?
... Say what now?
But what really seemed to tick Person A off a bit more, is that a couple days later, Person B updates her review book again with Person D's book.
Her's had about 10-20 parts in it as well, and Person B thought the writing was so flowing. Person A agreed that the story is quite... unique in a sort, so Person A decided to check out the book for herself.
Chapter 1......
"Why is taking my mother so long?"
...... Flowing writing?
So let me see if I got this....
Shorter stories, get the better reviews?
.... I don't know if that sounds right.
END OF RANT!
Once again I apologize if anyone is offended by this rant!
