Queen - A Kind Of Magic
Their 1986 album, which has a few songs used in the movie Highlander. It only has 9 songs, which is very short compared to other albums. More of a rock album. Many thanks to -mrfahrenheit for suggesting this chapter!!
---------------------------------------↓
9 Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme). This one is just weirdly too metal to me, and that's not something I really enjoy. I like the guitar in the beginning. The "now you die" part is very intense. I can listen to a lot of heavy songs, but not this much. More of a yelling style of singing.
8 Don't Lose Your Head. The voice in the beginning is weirdly heavy, this one is more on the repetitive side. The beat is close to "Radio Ga Ga". Guitar is pretty simple, also very 80s sounding, of course. This one just repeats the title too much for me. I guess the saying in this song is that love is strong so don't go crazy when something bad happens?
7 Princes Of The Universe. I don't like the harmonies in the beginning. The dual guitars sound cool with it. Also a very heavy sounding song. Halloween vibes for some reason. And then it changes tempos? The words sound very close together, not far enough apart. Part of it sounds like "The Prophet's Song" specifically the "Listen to the mad man" line. It gets even faster but then changes back. Too many tempo changes for my liking. The guitar creeps me out in a death like way
6 Pain Is So Close To Pleasure. Kinda similar to "One Year Of Love". And like "Cool Cat" with the singing in falsetto. Sounds more synthesized, soulful. I like the "some days you feel good, some days you're feeling bad" line. The title is interesting if you think about it. The ending is kinda repetitive.
5 One Year Of Love. It's interesting, but I don't really like this one. This one is slower, but I get a little bored by it. Also a little repetitive compared to other songs. "It's always a rainy day without you" lyric is a bit cheesy and cliché. A little jazzy, but just not my style. Typical 80s love song
4 One Vision. The beginning is a bit heavy, but I like the song as it goes on. The energy is very good here, the lyrics are also pretty good. I like the guitar in this. Very inspiring, 80s beat. I like Freddie's voice in this. "No wrong, no right, I'm gonna tell you there's no black and no white/look what they've done to my dreams" lyrics are good. Kinda dance-y beat. At the "just gimme, gimme, gimme fried chicken" line just made me laugh after taking the song seriously. A great song about humanity
3 A Kind Of Magic. Very catchy, I like the words and melody. I like the beat too, Roger's harmony is nice. My favourite lyrics in this are "the bell that rings inside your mind is challenging the doors of time/the flame that burns inside of me, is hearing secret harmonies" . Those are very good lines. A good example of Roger's songwriting skills. Apparently, during the "I'm hearing secret harmonies" , the guitar harmonies are done by Roger!
2 Who Wants To Live Forever. Inspired by the film, "Highlander", this is a very poignant ballad. I like it a lot, it really tugs at my heart with the lyrics and how Brian and Freddie both sing. Makes me emotional, but it's good that I can feel the meaning of this song pretty easily. It makes me sad too, thinking about Freddie.
1 Friends Will Be Friends. It starts off very 80s power ballad, which I love. I also really love the guitar solo. Beautiful lyrics, as this song was written by both Freddie and John (Although Roger and Brian have really great songs, Deaky and Freddie just had that "touch" for lyrics). It has a good message too. Even me, someone who doesn't have basically anyone I have to call friends, this gets me deep inside.
Comment what you'd like next! (Besides the next chapter, which will be Rubber Soul)
