Chapter 24: Let Go

Y/N's POV:

The door was almost too easy to spot among the burnt material that lay splayed out on the ground. "Do you think it's a trap?" Myst whispered to me. I didn't look back at her, just stared questioningly at the door.
"Only one way to find out," Reaper said. He skidded down the dark black wall that hadn't been melted and stood in front of the door. He hesitated quietly before kicking at the door. A hollow pound bounced back, but the door didn't budge. We all stared at Reaper.
"What now?" Ninja slid down the wall, standing next to Reaper. Reaper shrugged, and engaged in quiet conversation. Ninja turned back to us.
"We'll take a few minutes away from the searching. Just hang out for a moment," he called back, turning back to Reaper. I shrugged and walked back to a tree that was still standing. I sighed out and closed my eyes. I was really tired.
"What do you think is behind the door?" I jumped at the sound of Blue's question. Myst sat down beside her and Flare on my other side.
"Nothing good, that's for sure," Flare growled. I didn't need conversation now. I needed rest.
"Yeah, I can agree," Myst commented quietly. "But we have to know who or what's going on under the surface." I glanced up at the sky and saw that the late spring time sun was slowly melting away to dark clouds. I blinked slowly and rested my head against the tree trunk. The sun was so warm on my aching arms and legs, I woke up when the sun disappeared from the sky and was masked by the clouds. Veils of dark blueish gray rain trailed behind the mass of darkness and a cold wind swept past us and whisked it's way through the forest.
"Ugh! Really? Rain? I hate rain...," I heard Flare growl. She tightened up beside me. I glanced over at her and I saw that she was curled up into a ball, her knees sucked into her chest and her arms wrapping around them. A glare was left on her face as she stared out into the clearing. I smirked at the image.
"It's fine, Flare," I said. "Rain isn't going to hurt you."
"Yes it will!" she snapped back, in a playfully serious tone. "Fire element here." You know, I never really thought about Flare being exposed to water. She was the fire element out of us all. The rain had started to sprinkle in fat drops, hitting the ground and leaves.
"Hey, guys! We've got the door open," Ninja's voice called over the shushing noise of the leaves rattling together and being pounded by rain. "Hurry, before the rain catches us." I nodded and let Blue, Carissa, and Myst run ahead. "Flare, come on!" I encouraged quietly. She shook her head at me and glared out into he clearing again.
"No way. Sorry, but I don't want to be burned out," she insisted. I rolled my eyes at her and grabbed her wrist.
"If you stay, then the rain will be even heavier than before! Come on!" I didn't give her time to think about it. I just started tuning pulling her with me through the small drops that would soon multiply. After five seconds, we were in the facility's basement.
"Not so bad, right?" I asked with a smile. Flare glared at me, but nodded anyways.
"Thanks," she growled. The darkness outside was like the opposite of what darkness we found inside the room. It was pure black, nothing could be seen.
"Anyone get a light?" Ninja asked. I glanced over at Blue, but she shrugged in the gray light. "Flare?" A bright orange blaze lit the room as Flare used her powers. The warmth that came from the flame was relieving. Almost like drinking hot chocolate on a brisk cold winter day.
"Let's start moving," Blue said. She walked into the darkness, the others following behind her. The walls of the basement weren't burned, but scars were etched and engraved into them. Their color was dark gray like the clouds above. Surprisingly, there was no sound of the rain that beat down on the ground and burnt facility above.
Murmurs of amazement and whispers of fear echoed around us. As Blue and Flare lead the way, Ninja and Reaper engaged in quiet conversation. I wasn't close enough to hear, but Reaper seemed a bit on edge. "Hey, what's this do?" Blue pointed to a small lever on the wall. Everyone froze and stared at the silver switch. Reaper moved forward, his footsteps bouncing off the walls.
"Let's see. Everyone, spread out, in case of a trap," he ordered. Everyone spread out from Reaper's position. He placed his hand on the lever and pulled it up. A loud buzzing noise came in clearly, then an intake of air that ruffled all of our scarves.
Biiiiiuuuuzzzzuzuzuzuzzzzzuuuzzzzzzzzzz- shhhhhuuuuuuaaaaaahhhhhhhhh...
Shhhhhhhhhsssssshhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaat!
And bright lights came on, one by one down the hall. But as they turned on, there was more than one hall. Some to the right, some to the left. We gasped in amazement at how much work and time had been put into this.
"My God..." Reaper whispered, staring wide eyed at the marvelous structure. "Who did this?" I glanced down the white light lit halls, wondering where to go.
"Where now?" Myst said aloud. I shrugged and looked up at the lights. A blue line was messily traced down this hallway, leading to the right. Everyone stared at me. "This way," I said, walking forward and down the right hall. They all hesitated for a moment.
I turned back, seeing them glance at each other and share uncertain looks. "Come on, guys. Don't you see the blue line?" I pointed skyward, revealing the blue line. No one spoke.
"What are you afraid?"
Flare stepped forward, her eyes blazing. "No! We're... we're just a little uncertain it's a good idea to be following something like this."
"Then prove to me that you are not afraid," I fired back. Flare glared at me. She wanted to prove that she was brave. But... she was still hesitant.
"Snowbird is right," Ninja said, walking towards me. He placed a hand on my shoulder and looked back at the others. "If one of us goes, then we all go." Reaper nods and walks forward, standing with us. After that, we all started down the right hallway.

"We're lost! Thanks, Snowbird! You really did save the day!" I whipped my head back to Carissa's jeering comment. Her black suit blended in with the shadows, only making her yellow stripes visible. I rolled my eyes and glanced up at the ceiling again. The blue line was gone. It had stopped at random down a hallway.
"We're not lost, Carissa," I snapped back. "We can follow the blue line back."
"That'll take hours! Who knows how long we've been down here. I'm tired. I'm hungry! We didn't plan very well for this," she fired back.
"We weren't planning on being down here this long," Ninja broke in. I blinked at him gratefully. I sighed and turned to walk back down the way we came. But something caught my eyes. Something... shiny. I turned, but it was almost too late. Bullets smashed into the paved cinder under our feet. "Look out!" I was slammed into the ground, covered my ears, pinched my eyes shut and waited for the sound to stop.
After a few seconds, I opened my eyes and saw that Ninja had his arms around me and held me to the ground. We blinked and looked into each others eyes and I guessed that he blushed as well as I did and we departed. "Sorry..," I heard him say. "Is everyone ok?"
Blue held Myst in her arms, shaking her head. "I think Myst was hit," she called. We ran over and looked down at Myst. Her eyes read panic and distress, her breathes coming in shot gasps.
"Calm down, Myst. Calm down," I whispered, taking her hand. She stared at me and I tried to look as calm as possible. She needed to rest.
"Were you hit?"
"N-n-n-n-no..."
"Can you walk?" At that moment, Myst's eyes teared up and she quietly sobbed. Her hand squeezed mine, and she curled up in a ball.
"I-I-I was s-so close t-t-t-to death..." she whispered.
"That was a trap," Reaper said, coming to stand next to Blue and Myst. He knelt down and rubbed Myst's shoulder.
"Well, thanks Captain Obvious," Ninja whispered. Reaper blinked at him and me for a few moment before standing again. Ninja and I stood in unison, staring at Reaper.
"But it was so perfectly timed... No one tripped over any wires, flipped any other switches than the one that I flipped to turn on the lights, or stepped on any pressure plates. So someone other than us must want us... dead or alive." He added the last part more quietly so it didn't scare Myst again. I sighed and turned to everyone.
"Ok, guys. We're going to be taking a few minutes-30 at most-for an short rest. Just stay alert and be ready to leave at any given time," I said. Everyone nodded and a few sighed with relief. I looked up at the blue line. There was something suspicious going on, and I wanted to know who the juice was behind this.

-Half An Hour Later-

The night sky was upon us as we emerged out of the maze. "Finally! Some fresh air," Blue breathed and stretched out her arms. Myst had over come her little break down, but we still a little jumpy. "We'll rest here for the night, to keep an eye on this place," Ninja said, sweeping his gaze around to each of us.
"But what about food?" Carissa called.
"Ok, Carissa, if you are so hungry, you and Blue can go back to the cabin and grab the last of the food there is," Ninja said, but it didn't sound as mean as his words. Carissa nodded and followed Blue into the forest. Ninja strode past me, patting me on the shoulder. I turned around and my gaze trailed after him, but he didn't look back. He just went and talked to Reaper, Flare, and Myst.
What was that about? I thought. I sat down on a jutted wall that sank into the ground. Stared at the earth, which had been painted black by the night's fall and since the moon wasn't high enough in the sky, I could only see chips and pieces of wall and stone that were light enough to stand out from the ground. I turned back to the door that lead to the the maze, which had been closed.
A small, thin beam of light came out of the bottom of the door. I wondered how long the lights could last, how powerful they were, and if it was safe enough to go back in there tomorrow. But just as my thoughts started to rise...
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhzz... And the light under the door faded from sight. I suddenly felt tired. My muscles ached and my eyes were heavy. I tried to push the feeling away, but failed spectacularly. I curled up in a small, knees to my chest and drifted off into an endless sleep.

"Snowbird! Snowbird wake up!" My eyes sprang open, seeing Shira's eyes staring at me.
"Whoa! Whoa!" I back up, gasping from the jump scare. "Jeez, Shira! Don't do that!" I stood up and glared playfully at her.
"You have a lot worse problems then being scared by me," she growled, rolling her eyes. "Don't go back down to that maze. I'm begging you." This was more astonishing to me than anything else. Not go down there?
"Why not go down there?" I thought aloud, my playful glare turning hard. "What's down there that you know but I don't?"
"Please, just take my advice and-"
"What are you hiding?" I demanded. I could see she was hiding something from me. Something huge and important. But what? I could trust her, so she should be able to trust me!
"I know what you're thinking. And I do trust you. But please, as a favor to me, don't go down there." Her eyes glowed as she stared into my soul, pleading, begging for me to give in. I narrowed my eyes and sighed.
"No. We are going back down there whether you like it or not," I said defiantly.
"Snowbird! You would dare disobey me? How can I make you understand that you can't go back there?"
"Tell me what you are hiding!"
"That is one thing I can't risk you knowing. You would abandon so many things if I told you! Please, anything else? Anything at all!"
"Nope. What ever you are hiding will be the only thing that makes me believe that I will meet certain doom down in the maze," I said, folding my arms. I wasn't going to let her get the best of me. Not this time. Not ever again.
"Very well. But be warned that since you are making the decision to disobey me will lead to even more pain and more suffering," she said quietly. And then I awoke, feeling fully rested and ready to go again. I have my own opinions about things, Shira. And if you really trusted me, you would tell me what was down there. For that, I will not answer to you anymore, I vowed strongly and quietly to myself.

"So she told you not to go down to the maze again?" I rolled my eyes.
"Yes, Ninja. We've been over this at least three times now. And I've said the exact same thing for the past three times!"
"Sorry. It's just a little surprising that she said no..."
"Yeah, but she knows something's up. And I want to know, but she won't tell me a single word! Not even a hint," I pouted angrily, crossing my arms over my chest. I was still angry with Shira about the whole stand off we had. Well, who wouldn't be! She was my mentor. We were supposed to help each other and tell each other almost anything. So why wouldn't she tell me this?
"Here, eat something. It'll help you cool off," Ninja said, handing me a piece of bread. I nodded to him in thanks and lifted the bottom of my mask up for me to eat my food. "I won't look if you want to take off your mask." I blinked at Ninja as he hid his eyes in his hands. The moon was a half circle in the sky, so the fire light in front of us was the only thing that shone light on his shiny black suit.
"O-ok...," I said, cautiously taking off my mask. If felt so cold without it on when the bands retreated back into the mask. I quickly ate my bread, washed it down with some water, then slid the mask back on. "Can I open my eyes yet?"
"Yeah, it's fine," I reassured him. He blinked open his eyes and stared at me. I could imagine he was smiling under his mask. It was so cute the way his eyes smiled for him. He turned his stare from me to the flickering flames of the fire. The orange glow rested and burned in his eyes.
"Are you scared?" I finally asked. Ninja met my gaze slowly.
"Scared?" he echoed, almost unable to comprehend the words. I nodded once. "What do you mean?"
"Are you scared... of anything?" Ninja seemed a little hesitant to answer. His blue eyes searched mine, I'm supposing for any sign of a joke. But there was none.
"Yes," he whispered, dropping his gaze to the ground. "I am scared. In fact, I'm terrified."
"Of what?" I prompted, my eyes growing wider. He seemed so brave in battle and so calm. I could never imagine him being afraid of anything!
"Of not being a good leader. Of loosing the rest of you. If that were to happen... I don't know what I would do," he finished. How cliché! Just what everyone hears in a movie of how a leader would talk about how they were scared of not being a good enough leader, or how they would break down in the thought of being alone.
"Come on. Don't use an excuse like that! Every movie has something like that in it." I straightened up when he looked up at me. I wanted to let him know that he was never going to be alone.
"You are the best leader. You won't ever be alone. Never, ever. And you are not afraid of anything. Nothing. And nothing will ever stop you. You battled the Sorcerer! You defeated McFist a thousand times! Come on. There has to be no fear in you," I said. His eyes glowed with pride, with admiration. "Trust me. After what you've been doing for the past few months, you aren't afraid."
"Thank you, Snowbird... thank you...," he said. He leaned forward and wrapped his arms around me. I wrapped my arms around him. We stayed that way for a little while until I fell asleep again. My anger had been frozen... for now, anyways.

-The Next Morning-

"Let's take another route," Reaper said, turning left from the blue line.
"I think that we should explore farther down the blue path," I countered calmly.  He looked to everyone else.
"Ok, then. Let's take a vote," he announced, his voice bouncing off the cinder. "Who wants to take another path?" Myst and Flare raised their hands quietly. "Ok, who wants to keep going down the blue path?" Ninja, Carissa, Blue, and I raised our hands. He let out a surrendering sigh, then nodded. We walked down the blue path tunnel and watched as the line disappeared.
"Everyone, stay sharp," Ninja called to us. We all nodded and walked down the path, continuing into the unknown. Loud, but muffled bangs clashed above us, followed by the shushing and whispering of steam.
"Someone must have been working on this for years...," Myst whispered to me. I had no comments, and continued in silence. Minutes later, there was silence. Complete silence. No shushing of the steam, no muffled bangs. We stopped. My heart started to race. What will we face now? I thought. But then the banging started up again and the sighing of the steam came once more. I sighed with relief.
"Good, now let's keep-"
Blue's words escalated to a scream as the floor from under her dropped and a long drop followed. Her fingers clasped the side of the floor, trying to pull herself up, but gravity seemed a little too strong. "Give me your hand!!" I screamed, racing to the corner of the fallen floor. Gravity was stronger there, nearly pulling me down. Blue nodded and moved around the edge, to the corner.
By the time her hand reached mine, she was almost too heavy for me. "Guys!!" I glanced back to see the floor between both of us had died away.
"Hold on! We're-"
"No! There's a gravity thing at the bottom. It'll suck you right in! I'll see what I can do!" I yelled back, trying to pull Blue back up. But there was no hope. The gravity was too strong for just me. And I knew that Blue was starting to get tired. She glanced back down at the pure white that fell from the floor. Then she looked back up at me, tears lofted on her eyelashes.
"Snowbird... Let go."
"What!? Are you crazy!!?"
"No, Snowy, you know as well as I that I'm not crazy. Please. It's my time. We can't risk you dying. Please, just let go." My eyes watered as I pulled with all my strength to try and get Blue back. I couldn't loose Blue. Not Blue!
"Snowbird, stop struggling," she said. I pulled harder, but when I looked back at her hand, it was limp, ready for me to let go.
"I... I can't loose you!" I said. "And what do you mean by we can't risk me dying? I'm not as important as you! You have more power than I!"
"Don't worry. We will see each other again. Promise." Her eyes smiled sadly for her hidden mouth. Then I shut my eyes and let go. The my hands felt weightless as I watched her slip into the light. There was no sounds for a moment before bright blue forget me nots exploded from the bottom of the pit. The floor closed up, letting the flowers light down on the floor. The tears fled down my face, my heart broken... for the third time.

Thank you to @Randys_Girl for her OC, Blue.
