A Day of Ciritical Fails.

When you're a DM, and one of your players rolls a 1... there's some form of enjoyment. Everywhere from the expression of their face to the outcome of their failure.

So last weekend we had a D&D meeting and my players are traveling. It's a downpour and they can barley see. So after some time I roll for a random encounter. 2 owlbears... shouldn't be that bad. Most of my players are a level seven...

I misjudged everything.

So one party consists of a High Elf Sorcerer, a Drow Wizard, a Construct Battlemedic, A gnome barbarian and an Aasimar Paladin. I mean this should be easy... despite the disadvantage they had due to the down pour.

So it's going okay, until our Sorcerer casts a spell called Ray of Frost... the first 1 of the day. So her epic failure resulted in her turning into a block of ice. So next our gnome tries to attack an owlbear... but gets a one and he's close enough to hit the Sorcerer.... CRACK! Cuts halfway into her arm. Then our battlemedic tries to attack, he rolls another one.... CRACK! The Sorcerers arm is gone.

By now the girl playing the Sorcerer is quite and out Wizard has a plan. I can't remember the exact name of the spell, but vines covered the entire area and left quite a few pot holes in the road. In order to cross the vines you have to succeed and acrobatics check, and out Battlemedic gets a natural 1... so he takes three times the damage and is wrapped under the vines. Then our gnome fails... but not critically. So it's our Paladin and our Wizard. They barley won that fight.

Never underestimate two bears with feather and owl faces......

But out Wizard managed to get a natural 20. One of my players pointed out that our Sorcerers player was impulsive and always agreeing to help people. So I... naturally... took advantage of that.

Enter Grannie Breakbone. An Anis Hag disguised as an old woman asking for help. So the Battlemedic helps her into their carriage and they take her to her hit. Our Sorcerer and Wizard don't trust her, but the other players do. The players who trusted her went into her home, only to fall into a rocky pit. So our Wizard and Sorcerer end up fighting her.

While this is happening, our Aasimar and Gnome are trying to climb out of the pit and force the trap door open, our Battlemedic and his pet wolf are waiting to be rescued. In the hut the Sorcerer accidentally sets part of the place on fire.

Just before both of them die a few turns later, the Wizard gets angry. She casts Disintegrate... and rolls a natural 20. So the awesomest roll you can get in the game.

She kills the Anis Hag doing almost 130... just s but over actually... damage. The entire house is set on fire, and the forest surrounding it. It was awesome!

Well I've updated.

I really need coffee...
