Chapter 16: Secrets and Shadows
The morning sun spilled across the Host Club room, highlighting the gilded furniture and the intricate wards shimmering faintly in the corners. Haruhi slumped in a chair, notebook in her lap, mask still dangling from her wrist.
Just another day, she thought, trying to convince herself. Another day serving tea, managing clients, and…oh right…protecting everyone while pretending I’m just some errand boy.
---
Tamaki, Unstoppable
Tamaki floated into the room like a beam of gold, wearing his crisp suit and impossibly perfect smile. “Haru-chan! I trust you slept well?”
“I did,” she muttered, trying to keep her voice neutral.
“Marvelous!” Tamaki exclaimed, clasping his hands. “Because today, we will dazzle, delight, and demonstrate the full glory of the Host Club!”
Haruhi groaned quietly to herself. And somehow, I’m in the middle of it all.
He drifted closer, deliberately brushing her papers with his fingers. “And, of course, we’ll make sure our most valuable aide looks spectacular.”
Haruhi stiffened, but forced a small smile. “I’ll…do my best.”

Fish Out of Water
Even now, after nearly two weeks in the club, she still felt like an outsider. Every flirtatious quip, every swooning guest, every extravagant flourish of the club members’ powers reminded her that she wasn’t a typical student. She wasn’t just a host — she was a devil navigating a human world, and a girl pretending to be a boy in front of dozens of oblivious peers.
She leaned back, thinking of her father. He can’t know. No one can know. Not the teachers, not the students…
Her hands flexed, fingertips tingling faintly with the residual energy of her Sacred Gear. I have to keep it together. I have to stay in control.

Competence in Disguise
A bell rang, signaling the first guests of the morning. Haruhi straightened, smoothing her blazer and taking a deep breath. As the club moved into action — Tamaki dazzling, the twins weaving illusions, Honey bouncing along with Usa-chan — Haruhi stepped forward, assisting smoothly.
She guided a shy young student to a seat, suggested tea blends, and even managed to diffuse a minor mix-up when two guests reached for the same pastry.
Not bad, she thought, hiding her pride. Even if I do pretend to hate this, I can…do this.
Tamaki, of course, noticed. His golden aura flared ever so slightly as he watched her in action. “Haru-chan! You’re brilliant!”
Haruhi waved him off. “I just…followed protocol.”
The twins snickered. “Followed protocol? Who even says that?”

The Importance of Secrets
Later, as the last guests departed, Haruhi sank into a chair again. She watched the others laughing and teasing one another, and her stomach tightened with the weight of her responsibilities.
If anyone discovered the truth — that she was a devil, that she had a Sacred Gear, or that she was really a girl — it could unravel everything. Not just her position in the club, but the delicate balance keeping the Host Club’s secrets intact.
She flexed her hands again, feeling the familiar shimmer of her Sacred Gear. I have to keep my secrets. I have to protect them all. And…I have to survive this strange, impossible world.
---
Tamaki’s Persistent Flirtation
As she gathered her things, Tamaki appeared again, bowing low with his usual flourish. “Haru-chan, you’ve outdone yourself! Truly! I must insist we celebrate your talents after…well, perhaps later. Privately, even.”
Haruhi blinked. “Privately?” She frowned, skeptical of what he meant. Is he flirting, or is this just Tamaki being Tamaki?
Tamaki winked. “You’ll see. It will be spectacular.”
Haruhi shook her head, muttering under her breath. I can’t even tell if he’s serious…or if I’m just being paranoid.
---
Quiet Resolve
Alone for a moment, Haruhi let herself breathe. Between her devil powers, her role as a host, and the impossible pressure of her secrets, the coming days would be far from easy.
But she could handle it. She had to.
Because no one else could fight her battles for her — not her father, not the club, not even Tamaki.
And somewhere deep inside, a small spark of determination glimmered.
I’ll be ready for whatever comes next.
