Chapter 14: After the Masquerade
The music room was quiet. The masks had been hung neatly, the scattered petals swept away, and the golden candlelight flickered faintly in the evening haze. The Spring Masquerade had ended without the guests realizing how close they had come to disaster.
Haruhi sank into a chair, still trembling from the adrenaline of the attack. Her hands hovered over the edge of her mask, remembering the crystalline shields and the force she had unleashed.
Tamaki knelt beside her, golden aura faintly glowing. “Haru-chan…are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” she said, though her voice was tight. “Just…a little shaken.”
Tamaki’s eyes softened. “You were amazing. I don’t know what we would have done without you.”
Haruhi looked down, cheeks flushing. “It wasn’t just me. You all—everyone—helped.”
Tamaki shook his head, a rare frown crossing his features. “No. You’re the one in the middle of it. If anything had happened—” He broke off, unable to continue.
Kyoya, standing at the far side of the room, adjusted his glasses. “Calm yourself, Tamaki. The situation was handled efficiently. There’s no need for dramatics.”
Haruhi stole a glance at him. “Kyoya’s right, you know.”
Kyoya smirked faintly. “For once, Haruhi agrees with me.”

The Debrief
Kyoya gathered the club in a circle. “Let’s review what happened. Haruhi’s Sacred Gear was the first line of defense, effective and responsive. The intruder exploited a temporary lapse in ward monitoring.”
The twins exchanged glances, smirking. “That means we need more drills,” Hikaru said.
Kaoru added, “Yeah, and maybe teach Haruhi some offensive combos too.”
Honey bounced happily. “I think she did great!”
Mori, silent as always, simply nodded, his eyes scanning the room for lingering traces of the intruder.
Kyoya’s gaze returned to Haruhi. “You performed well under stress. However, you must remain aware: this was likely only a preliminary test. Whoever sent that stray devil is still assessing you.”
Haruhi stiffened. “A test…? Then there’s someone behind all of this?”
Kyoya inclined his head. “Undoubtedly. And next time, it may not be so easy to repel.”

Tamaki’s Growing Concern
Tamaki stayed unusually close to Haruhi as they walked back toward her dorm, his hand brushing hers more than once. “Haru-chan, from now on…you have to promise me you’ll stay close to the club. We can’t afford any mistakes.”
“I know,” she replied softly, still processing the attack.
“You’re…very important,” Tamaki murmured, voice low enough that only she could hear. “To me.”
Haruhi’s heart skipped a beat. She opened her mouth to reply, but Tamaki’s sudden grin and dramatic bow made her frown instead. “Never mind,” he said cheerfully. “Just promise, okay?”

A Shadow Watching
Far beyond the school grounds, a dark figure leaned over a balcony, eyes glinting in the night.
“She awakens faster than expected,” the voice hissed. “It’s time to accelerate the plan.”
A black sigil flickered across the figure’s hand. “Next time…she won’t be so lucky.”
