The Shadow Labyrinth: The Summoning (Part 2)
The Summoning (continued)
Her mouth went dry. The stories, the whispered tales, the ink on old pages-none of it had prepared her for the sight of him standing in her room. He filled the space with shadows that bent toward him as if he were the heart of gravity itself.
"You're real," she whispered, stumbling back, her book slipping from her fingers.
His mismatched eyes gleamed, one silver, one gold, each colder than the other. "More real than your family's love, it seems. They never listen. Never see you. But I have seen you-always."
Her chest tightened. "No-I didn't mean it, I didn't really mean it!" Her voice shook, rising into panic. "I don't want to leave my home, not like this!"
The Shadow King tilted his head, raven-dark hair falling across his pale brow. He moved closer, every step silent as falling ash. "What's said is said. You wished that I would spirit you away, and I have answered."
Tears pricked her eyes. She backed against her bedframe, clutching at the quilt as though it might anchor her. "Please... please, I didn't know you were real."
For a moment, something unreadable flickered across his face-an echo of gentleness, quickly swallowed by a cruel smile. He leaned closer, his voice like velvet drawn across a blade. "I told you, I've always been real. I've watched you since the moment you could walk, since you whispered your first stories to the dark. And now, you are mine."
"No!" she burst out, her defiance sparking even through her fear. "You can't just take me."
The Shadow King's laughter was low and rich, curling through the air like smoke. "Can't I? You summoned me, little one. You asked, and I came. But..." His gaze softened slightly, though his tone remained sharp. "I am not without mercy. If you are so determined to resist, then I will grant you a chance. A game."
Her breath hitched. "A... a game?"
He straightened, his cloak of shadows swirling around him. "My labyrinth. Three days. If you can find your way through and reclaim what I have stolen from you, I will return you to this world, untouched."
Her voice faltered. "Stolen? What did you take?"
He leaned down once more, his lips nearly brushing her ear. His words were quiet, but they sank into her like thorns:
"Your heart."
The world seemed to tilt, her breath catching as the shadows rose higher around them, whispering with laughter and secrets. And with the wave of his hand, her room dissolved into darkness, leaving her standing at the edge of an endless, shifting maze.
The game had begun.
