Enchanted Shadows: Breaking the Curse
The Breaking of the Curse
The ballroom glittered with candlelight, laughter and music filling the air as nobles whispered behind jeweled fans. But despite the golden splendor, an unease rippled through the guests. The engagement ball had begun—yet the princess was nowhere to be seen.
Prince Alaric, dressed in white and gold, raised his goblet with an easy smile. “Do not fret, my lords and ladies. Princess Sofia will be here soon. She would not miss this night for the world.”
The whispers quieted, though doubt still lingered in the air.
The great doors creaked open with a thunderous groan.
Cedric stepped into the hall.
A hush fell. His mismatched eyes glinted in the candlelight, his cloak trailing like spilled ink across the marble floor. Old memories rippled through the crowd—memories of the sorcerer banished years ago. Mothers clutched their children closer, courtiers shrank back.
Alaric’s hand tightened on his goblet. “You.” His voice was cold, but his jaw trembled. “Where is Sofia?”
Cedric’s smile curved, sharp and knowing. “That,” he said softly, “is the very question you should be asking yourself.”
Murmurs surged through the hall.
“What trickery is this?” Alaric demanded.
“No trick,” Cedric replied, lifting his hand. A circle of silver light flared around the prince’s feet, tendrils of magic coiling like chains. “Merely the truth.”
Gasps erupted as the spell pulsed. Alaric struggled, his breath catching as the magic forced his tongue.
“Tell them,” Cedric said, his voice like steel. “Tell them who you love.”
Alaric’s face contorted. He tried to fight it—but the words broke free, raw and undeniable.
“I… I love her!” His eyes darted to the maiden at his side, not toward the absent princess. “Not Sofia—I love her!”
The crowd erupted, horrified.
And at that moment—
The great doors slammed again.
Sofia stumbled in, her gown torn from her flight, the amulet at her throat flickering weakly. She froze as the prince’s words struck her like a blade.
Her lips parted, trembling. “Alaric…?”
The curse within her ignited, tearing through her body. She cried out, feathers rippling across her skin as she collapsed to the marble, gasping.
The nobles recoiled in terror.
For the first time, Cedric’s confidence faltered. He hadn’t meant—he hadn’t known…
“No—” he breathed, his heart seizing. He rushed forward, gathering her in his arms before anyone else could move. Her body felt frail, fading.
“Don’t you dare leave me,” he whispered, his voice breaking in front of them all. His forehead pressed to hers as tears burned in his eyes.
“You showed me there’s more to life than hatred… That I can love, and be loved in return.” His voice cracked, raw with desperation. “I love you, Sofia. And only you. My heart is yours. Just—please come back to me.”
He kissed her, unguarded, desperate.
Her amulet burst into radiant silver fire, light flooding the ballroom. The curse shattered, feathers dissolving into sparks that danced across the floor.
When the brilliance faded, Sofia lay breathing in his arms, her eyes fluttering open, tears glistening as she whispered for all to hear:
“It was you… you set me free.”
And before the stunned court, she rose weakly, cupping his face, and kissed him back.
