13 Dancing Princesses: Grimshade
Scene: Shadows of Grimshade
The pavilion lanterns flickered as the magic of the realm stirred, and before Regina’s eyes the air shimmered. Dark stone towers rose around them, climbing high into the air like jagged spires. A labyrinth unfurled across the ground beyond, its paths winding and twisting endlessly, impossible to map.
Regina gasped softly, taking Karayan’s hand.
“Is this… your home?”
Karayan’s eyes gleamed like embers beneath his dark lashes. He stood tall, the mantle of the Shadow King settling over his shoulders as naturally as breath.
“Yes. Grimshade. The kingdom that was mine to protect… until it was stolen from me.”
The shadows deepened, painting the vision with details. Mages cloaked in midnight robes walked the streets of a vast city, their hands glowing faintly with the arcane. Shadow animals moved through the alleys—a great wolf with silver eyes padded past, dissolving into mist when Regina blinked. In the skies above, a dragon of pure shadow circled once before vanishing like smoke.
“It was not a place of darkness as some would think,” Karayan said, his voice low but fervent. “The stone was dark, yes—but the hearts of my people? They were warm, loyal, brilliant. Necromancers who could speak to their ancestors. Shadow mages who wove light and darkness into beauty. A city built not to frighten, but to protect.”
Regina turned slowly, taking it in—the intricate carvings etched into the black stone, the windows glowing gold from within. It felt paradoxical: grim yet welcoming, like a hearth in the middle of night.
“The labyrinth…” she whispered. “To keep your enemies away.”
He nodded. “Every invader that tried to conquer Grimshade was lost in its twists. Only those who bore my mark could ever find the heart of the city.”
She lifted her gaze to his, eyes shining with a mix of admiration and melancholy.
“And now?”
His jaw tightened, shadows curling faintly around him.
“Now it waits. Empty. Silent. A kingdom in slumber. But the realm has told me this—” His hand tightened gently around hers. “—that with you, it will rise again. That Grimshade’s warmth and strength will return.”
Regina’s breath caught. Her pale skin almost glowed in the shadowed light, and for the first time in years, her heart swelled with something she had thought she’d buried with Damian: hope.
“I would see it with you, Karayan,” she said softly, conviction in her voice. “I would see it alive again.”
The shadow city shimmered, fading back into mist and lanternlight. But the promise of Grimshade lingered between them, heavy and unspoken.
