Across the Great Divide (part 1)

(Okay, so this one is kinda for Halloween. The normal words are for Lila, the words in italics are for Alex, and the words in bold are for when they cross the Veil. Enjoy!)

Lila slipped her headphones back into her ears, trying to block the noise of the party. She didn't know why she even came in the first place: she only knew one person anyway, and Sarah had left to go hang out with her other friends right away.

Alex sat in the hard plastic chair. His friend, Landon, had insisted he be here; he hadn't wanted to come. Well, at least he'd been able to smuggle his notebook in under his coat. Landon, of course, went to go hang out with the other football players, an exclusive club that Alex had no interest in joining.

Lila picked up her book. Leviathan, by Scott Westerfeld. It was one of her favorite series, for both storyline and illustrations. She started to read, hoping that she wouldn't feel quite so alone this time.

Alex leaned back. He hated Halloween, and Halloween parties even more. And now he was suffering from writer's block on top of that! He groaned, and hit his head against the wall. Maybe some  music would help? He pulled out his phone, scrolling through the songs until he found one he figured was pretty much true. Change My Clothes, by some band named Dream.

"Don't lack imagination

I'm just too scared to try.

Afraid that I won't make it,

But if I never step outside"

Lila could hear someone singing. She knew the song. It was a favorite of hers. Whoever the guy was, she already liked him.

"Of my comfort zone, here in my home, I'll never know

Where I could go.

It's worth it to make some mistakes.

You miss all of the shots that you don't take

I really wanna

Change the world, but can't

Change my clothes, wanna find a girl but can't

Find my phone.

I just

Lie in bed till the afternoon

Dreamin' bout the things that I wanna do."

Alex started a little when a girl's voice joined his. He frowned and looked around, but no one was near him. He stopped, thinking someone was playing a prank on him. The other voice cut off almost immediately.

"Why did you stop?"

The voice was so quiet that he was barely able to hear it.

He gulped. This was no prank.

"Who are you? What are you?"

Lila  frowned when the boy's voice said this. She replied,

"I think the better question is, 'Where are you'. I can't see you."

Alex looked around again.

"I'm sitting in the corner, on the chair. Are you a ghost?"

Lila frowned harder.

"No, I'm not a ghost. But are you sure that you aren't? I'm the one sitting on the chair in the corner."
