I/II) A Late Night Appreciation of Laura Shigihara

I'm so tired but my brain won't turn off.

So here's a very groggy ramble about Laura Shigihara.

Her voice is v v pretty and I want to sing like that. Her voice is so gentle and wispy and lovely.

My first ever experience with her was when I was really young (eight, to be exact). That Christmas, my sisters and I got an iPad as a gift for all of us to share. It was legit one of the first models. It was super thick and heavy. But it was so cool!

The first two games my sisters and I downloaded were Cut The Rope and Plants Vs Zombies. I liked both, but preferred the latter. I've never been very good at video games, despite my love for them, so it took me a long time (and some familial help) to finish the main game, but "Zombies on Your Lawn" was legit the catchiest shit I'd heard up to that point. I would listen over and over again to myself in the early mornings before anyone would be up to judge me.

I wouldn't hear Laura Shigihara's voice again until several years later, when I discovered the beautiful game, "To the Moon." This game has existed for quite a while, but I think I first discovered it maximum four years ago. Fortunately, that means my brain was developed enough that I really understood what was happening. I won't spoil it for you. But there's a gorgeous song at the end that perfectly reflects the most important character relationship in the story, called, "Everything's Alright," and if you pair it with what's going on in the game, instant weeping. Laura Shigihara just sounds like such an angel.

Now, of course, there's the song "Wish My Life Away" from To The Moon's sequel "Finding Paradise," (which is also stunning). But first came Deltarune. The credits song, "Don't Forget," is very remarkable. The lullaby-esque quality to her voice makes it an interesting experience to the listener. I've heard some people call it slightly eerie, especially when paired with the lyrics, and they consider it quite atmospheric. Others (me included) simply feel cozy comfort, wrapped up in the more positive themes presented throughout Deltarune's first chapter. I even recently sent it to a friend to reassure them that I'm here for them.

Around the time Deltarune came out was when my dummi brain put it together that these were all the same person. Only then did I discover "Wish My Life Away," and it's just the perfect little cherry on top. I LOVE Laura Shigihara.

She has this really distinctive way of singing her "s"s. There's like... a bit of a whistle to it? Like, I'm used to hearing s's sound a little bit like z's at times, but hers are so clear. She also kind of keeps her t's short, so that they're not too... idk, disruptive? Idek what I'm talking about at this point, but music just hits me, man.

Now excuse me while I try to go sleep but inevitably listen to "Everything's Alright" at least once.
