"Got your PJs? Stuffie?", Din listed off, waiting for your enthusiastic nod at each item listed.
"Brushed your teeth? Grogu's good night kiss?"
He smiled warmly as he tucked the blanket closer around your body and gave you a kiss on your forehead.
"Sleep tight. I've still got some work to do, but I'm in the cockpit if you need me, okay? You're safe."

"Okay", you agreed, sad he couldn't stay for cuddles, but you knew whatever he had to do was important, or else he would have joined you.

"Such a good boy for me", he ruffled your hair one last time and put his helmet back on. Content you snuggled closer to your favourite stuffie and waited for him to close the door.

You tried. You really tried. Even counted Blurrgs, even though it never really helped. Din says it does, but if it's a night like this one nothing helps. Except...

He said you could come if you needed him... But was this important enough? You wanted to be a big boy for him. A big boy who could fall asleep on his own and who didn't get scared in the dark. Which was when you realized how dark it actually was, you couldn't even see your own hand in front of you. And it was cold. An involuntary shiver wrecked you and you sniffed, trying to hold back the tears. Angrily you wiped across your face with your sleeve. This was stupid.

But even after tossing around for another way too long time without Din, you still felt alone and scared. Tentatively you stared at the button which would open the door. You could always say you bumped the button on accident...
Dragging the blanket behind you you climbed up the ladder to the cockpit, anxiously clutching your stuffie close to your body. He wouldn't be angry. Not Din.

In the cockpit you were welcomed by the familiar hum of the Razor Crest and Din extracting beeping sounds from his datapad and occasionally pushing a button on the control panel.
Maybe you didn't even need to get his attention. You were pretty sure you could fall asleep in your usual seat.
Cautiously you tip-toed over to your seat and tried to get as comfortable as possible, tucking the blanket closely around your body and drawing your knees up to your chest.

Just when you sat for a few moments, convinced Din would keep working and the stars outside the Crest flying past started lulling you to a comfortable snooze, Din started speaking.
"What's wrong, kid?"

At first you thought he was talking to Grogu, but then you remembered Din had finally started to call Grogu by his actual name and not just "kid" or "the little one" or "the child".

"Nothing", you mumbled, not wanting to bother him any more than you already were.

"Can't sleep?"

"No", you barely kept your voice from wavering. Judging by the way he turned around and looked soft even with his armor on, made you guess you probably failed.

"Go back to bed, yeah? I'll be right there."

You stayed in your seat, looking at him pleadingly, desperate enough that you hoped you wouldn't have to use words.

"Right. Or you can come with me. Come on, kid."

He got up and put his hand on the back of your head, gently guiding you through the ship to the little kitchen he had set up.
Without any words he started working on your bottle, knowing perfectly well what you needed right now.
Quickly enough the milk was heated up and Din stirred honey into your bottle. The thought alone of getting the bottle made you sleepy, your eyes going half-lidded and you started swaying softly on the spot.
You barely noticed Din screwing the bottle shut and turning around, "let's get you to bed, hm?"

Settled comfortably in the cot again you watched Din take off his helmet, the gesture still leaving you somewhat breathless and reverent, knowing his history. You saw him contemplate something quickly, then Din took off the rest of his armor as well.

"You don't... you don't have to", you said quietly, mumbling into the blanket that was draw up over your chin already.
"I know", he simply answered, leaving you beaming at him. He chuckled.
"Scoot over", and after some shifting you settled in his arm, head resting on his shoulder.

With his free arm Din gave you one of the tablets, "you can watch some shows if you want. I'm gonna finish up here," and with that he props his own datapad up against his thighs.
"You know how to pull up the library for your shows, right?"
You nodded and snuggled closer into his warmth, already trying to decide what to watch.
"My smart boy", he praised with a small teasing grin and bumped you softly.

Once you settled with an episode you wriggled around so you were as close as possible. All cuddled up, Din raised the bottle with the arm he had wrapped around you, keeping it tilted so you could suck at your own pace. With his free hand Din started working on his pad.

It was exactly what you'd needed, you couldn't even help the content little sighs that escaped you every once in a while, making Din chuckle softly next to you. He in turn couldn't help but lean over and give you little pecks on your temple and forehead. Every small kiss and every sip of the warm, honey-sweet milk made you sleepier and sleepier.

After you were about half way through the second episode, he checked how you were doing, praising on being almost done with the milk. Because you throwing a fit and refusing to finish all of it.. had also happened before.
Soon enough your bottle was empty, but you still kept sucking, hoping Din would just keep his arm around you and let you continue with the show.

"I think we're done here, hm?"
Of course he noticed. He always does. It's as if he's got another sense just for what's going on with you. Gently Din drew the bottle away and just as you were about to protest he adds, "the episodes are short, you can finish that one anyways. Don't worry, kiddo."

But then he started to get up and you really can't help the whine that escapes you. It would just be the same as earlier all over again. Tired you searched out for him with your hands, already missing his warmth.
"Just putting the bottle away", he soothed, stroking your hair out of your forehead.

"See? Already back. I'm here", and scooped you up into his arms, huffing a gentle laugh as you let out a sleepy hum.
Through your eyelids you could still sense the soft blue light of his datapad, but by now it acted more as a night light to you. It meant Din was still with you, awake and ready to protect you from anything and anyone.
And finally, finally, you were able to fall asleep.
