Danger Dude
"How was I supposed to know you were telling the truth when you said that Danger was your middle name?!" I shout, flying through the air - not by my own volition or power - while clinging onto a guy I literally just met.
"I made it kind of obvious!" he shouts back. I can still barely hear him over the wind.
I was sitting in the park, reading, enjoying a nice, warm day, when he sat down next to me and introduced himself. Said his name was Jason, then he pulled a pair of roller skates out of his bag and declared that he was going to do gymnastics while wearing them. Which he had never done before.
I'd raised an eyebrow. "Isn't that dangerous."
He'd smirked. "Danger is my middle name."
I just laughed and went back to my book, but glanced at him periodically, expected to see him face plant. However, he did one flip, landed on his butt, then didn't get the chance to try again.
Someone blew up the playground next to us.
Luckily, no one was playing on it, but it certainly got our attention. Particularly Jason's.
We quickly figured out who did it - The Flame, a super villain that's been terrorizing the city for years. He's been defeated over and over again by the city's superhero, Danger Dude.
(Yes, it's a dumb name. And, yes, he picked it out himself.)
I expected him to show up any second, but then suddenly Jason was in the Danger Dude suit and shooting lasers from his eyes at The Flame.
Naturally, I screamed.
This caused The Flame to look at me, then he decided to, you know, kill me, so Danger Dude - Jason - picked me up and started flying away.
"Where are we even going?!" I ask now, watching behind as his shoulder as The Flame chases after us.
"My lair!"
"You have a lair?!"
"Duh!"
"You are the most ridiculous superhero ever!"
"Well, I'm sorry I'm not Spiderman!"
By this point, we're apparently close to his lair because he tells me to close my eyes. I don't. "Why?!"
"So you won't know how to get in! It's top secret!" he shouts back. So, reluctantly, I close my eyes.
I hear a lot of noises - banging, machines moving, scanners beeping. Then, the doors or whatever close; I don't feel the wind anymore, and I can't smell the city. It smells like cinnamon cookies. Probably an air freshener. Finally, my feet touch the ground.
"Okay, you can open your eyes," Jason says.
I open them and look around the room. There's monitors, comfy chairs, beanbags, knickknacks, empty pizza boxes and soda cans, and a large table in the middle of the room with a map of the city on it.
"Jason, The Flame is-" someone starts, walking into the room - Crisis Charlatan, Danger Dude's partner. She stops when she sees me. "... Care to explain?"
"Oh, this is Kate. We kinda met The Flame in the park and I had to save her, so..."
"Well, I'm sorry to be such an inconvenience to you," I say sarcastically.
He sighs. "That's not what I meant - Look, we need to go save the city. You stay here and don't touch anything."
"I wanna go save the city," I say, much like a whiny child, I'll admit.
"You don't... You're a civilian. You don't have powers."
"I can throw water on a jerk who tried to kill me. Boom. He's extinguished."
"I... You know, that's not a bad idea."
Crisis Charlatan thinks a for moment. "Let's get some buckets."
She and Jason start heading into another room, so I follow to help.
We end up in a large storage room, and they go to the back corner, where there's, like, a hundred buckets.
"Why in the heck do you have all these?" I ask as they start to gather them.
"Remember that one villain who attacked the city a couple years ago?" Jason says. "Water Girl?"
"Yeah?"
"When we defeated her, she just, like, turned into water. The mayor made us get rid of her so she couldn't reform or something. So, we need buckets."
I reluctantly accept that explanation and help them gather buckets. Crisis Charlatan tells us the plan.
Once we have all the buckets gathered, we pass them out to multiple citizens, then Jason goes around with a hose and fills them all with water. We have everyone stand at an intersection, then Jason and Crisis Charlatan go and draw The Flame to the intersection.
Once he makes in the middle of the intersection, I shout, "Now!" Everyone throws their buckets of water on him. Someone actually throws the whole bucket.
His fire goes out, the bucket hits him, and he melts like the Wicked Witch of the West. Jason flies down next to me and we high five.
"Nice job," he says.
"Thanks."
"You know, you could, like, join us if you want." I give him a weird look, so he adds, "I mean, like, as a superhero. Even though you don't have powers."
I think for a moment. "Yeah, sure."
He smiles. "Sweet. You can be... Emergency Expounder."
I sigh. "Fine."
