Revenge of the Snowmen

It started with the weather.

Black clouds rolled, clapping with thunder; covering the once blue sky. The 40 odd degree temperature plummeted to -10 in ten seconds! The residents of Vaú looked up noting the temperature drop and fast walked or ran to finish their daily jobs and get home before the storm started. One adolescent boy stared at the shrouds longer than the others; long enough to see the slight green tint. This wasn't a normal thunder storm. This was a blizzard.

"Snow? In spring?" The boy questioned himself. How was that possible? Winter weather in spring in Brazil was a rarity. Rare was at least 100 years. A century! Shaking his head, he shuffled his feet to the Library of Vaú History. Grabbing the book of 'Rare Events', he flipped to the page of season weathers.

 'WINTER IN SPRING-

A NORMAL, MID-SPRING DAY CHANGES TO A CHILLY, WINTER STORM. THE SEEMINGLY NORMAL THUNDER STORM DEPICKS A SLIGHT GREEN TINT, SIGNALING A SNOW STORM.

THIS IS WHAT KNOWN AS 'REVENGE OF THE SNOWMEN'. SNOWMEN OF THE LAST CENTURY REBUILD THEMSELVES. IT IS UNKNOWN WHY THEY DO THIS, BUT IT IS ADVISED TO MOVE TO ANOTHER AREA DURING THEIR REIGN.

THE LASTING PERIOD IS ALL THREE MONTHS OF SPRING.'

The rest of the page was blank.

The whole of spring. That's how long they execute their plan. Fear flooded throughout the adolescent's veins. Slamming the book shut, he bolted out of the building and home.

Alicia jumped, knocking her glass of milk over and spilling it on her homework, as her brother slams the door behind him and thumps into the kitchen huffing and puffing and trying to yell while gaining his breath. Grumbling, she rights the cup and grabs a blow-dryer from the cupboard to dry her essay somewhat.

Finding his breath, the boy she's somehow related to hollers, "Hey sis! We've got a problem!"

"We've got a problem alright." She snarls back. "I have to write this all over again and it's due TOMORROW!!!!" Her proper meaning doesn't go unnoticed.

Aarav holds up his hands in surrender. "OK! OK! I'll do it. But we have more important things to deal with right now."

Alicia raises her eyebrow. What could be more important than finishing her essay on time? Or getting a college degree? Nothing meant more to her than her grades, not even her twins theories. His feelings? Yes. But conjectures? Heck no! For her, getting into the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB - Brazilian Air Force) meant the world. Seeming to sense that, her brother chucks a thick, brown leather-wrapped book onto the bench. Glancing side long at him, she runs her finger over the title.

"And? What does this old book have to do that's more important than my life?"

"That's exactly what's its threatening. Our lives." Aarav points, fear now lacing his voice. That had her perked. How has a book scared her brother? She watches his long fingers as he flips to a page. Sliding it towards her, his gaze demands she reads it. Questions still line her face once she's finished reading his so-called fear. Sighing, Aarav knew he was going to have to explain more.

"The snowmen, as you've read, come back in spring and kill everyone. Like everyone in this town. It hasn't happened for 100years..."

"So you're saying this is happening right now and we're ganna die?" Alicia interrupts.

"YES! That's exactly what I'm saying!" He throws his hands up, happy they're finally getting somewhere.

"I don't believe you." That cut his enjoyment like a carrot on the chopping board. Grabbing her hand, he dragged her outside, much to her complaint to the frigid weather.

"Look at the clouds." He tells her once he's stopped hauling. Alicia looks up, then flicks her gaze back to him saying, "They're clouds. They're grey and fluffy."

"Look harder." Sighing heavily, she looks back at the clouds, not noting anything.

"I don-" she's abruptly cut off by a change in colour. "Snow."

Her twin smiles at her. But it slips away when he notices she's pale. He embraces her tightly, hoping his warm will sooth her. A whisper, barely audible, comes from his chest. The question of the day:

 "What do we do now?"
