ANOTHER WARNING: LOTS AND LOTS OF SADNESS AHEAD

Steve watched as you grew more furious. He even saw tears in your eyes, a rare sight since you both had such a harsh military training.

"Steve!" you sobbed. His heart cracked at your voice. "Did you see and hear of the men? The women? The children? All of them...orphaned...taken from their homes! I can't stand by and watch that all happen!" Steve shook you hard, even though he just wanted to hug you and kiss you.

"(Y/N) (L/N)!" he shouted back. You grew silent. A single tear ran down your cheek. "You are a pilot! A damn good one at that! We can't afford to lose you! And you know that if you go out into that battlefield, you...you'll..." he couldn't finish his words.

"Steve," you whispered. The cold air almost blew away your words, and if Steve wasn't so close, he might not have heard you. "Darling, I'm going to die."

Steve couldn't say anything. He physically and mentally couldn't. His whole body was saying no. This was all wrong. This wasn't supposed to be how you two ended. This...this precious relationship was the last thing he could hold onto in the horrible war. And it wasn't even the relationship.

It was you. Your smile, your snarky remarks, your willingness to continue fighting even when it seemed impossible.

And it was all going to waste. Because of your compassion and your kindness. Your empathy behind that tough military shell.

Yet, Steve understood. He couldn't say no to you. All because of that compassion. That damn kindness and empathy.

"Ok," he whispered back. Your eyes welled up with tears again, but you smiled slightly. Steve pulled your closer to see you one more time. "Ok." He started to tear up.

"I won't ask you to come with me," you replied. He touched foreheads with you. You sighed. "But you would probably be courtmartialed. And we can't have the great Steve Trevor arrested, can we?" He laughed softly.

"I'm going to miss you," his voice cracked. "A lot." Steve kissed you one. Last. Time. "I wish we had more time...I love you..."

All these memories ran through Steve's head as he looked into Diana's blank eyes. She looked confused; her ears were probably ringing and she probably couldn't even hear him.

Steve repeated the words he had said so many years ago.

"I wish we had more time."

"What?!" Diana said loudly. He teared up. It was happening all over again...but backwards.

"I love you." His heart hurt. "Goodbye..." Steve ran into the airplane, placing his watch into Diana's hand and leaving her behind. She yelled his name, just as he had yelled yours, but ignored it.

He ran into the plane and started it, remembering how you had taught him to fly one. He smiled slightly and felt a tear fall from his eye.

Is this a wise choice? Is it the right one? Steve thought as he loaded his gun. He shook his head. For (Y/N). For compassion and kindness. For love. Steve wiped a tear from his face. He heard your voice: "This is how the great Steve Trevor goes out. With a bang." He grinned. Yes. With a bang.
