Short: Never There, Always Here

Never There, Always Here
I looked at him, dark eyes and soft lips glowing under the moonlight. I wanted us to last forever, but I knew, deep down, that it wasn't likely we would.
I mean, we were still so young. He'd probably forget me after all of this was over.
He was just a boy at heart, and probably always will be. He wasn't one to hold on to things. He was talented and he was hoping to become famous when he grew up. I was pretty sure that future didn't have a place for me in it... I was just me. I hadn't even done that well in terms of studies this year - I had no plans.
He was just so... ready. Ready for the future ahead of him and all that was in stake for him beyond school. Me? I had no idea what I wanted to become or what I was planning to do. I didn't even have the guts to do things I'd been wanting to do for years.
He turned to me all of a sudden and I could see his features so clearly. He had been born blind in one eye - it was a deformity to him, but to me it was what made him all the more memorable... Unforgetable. Irreplacable. He looked so beautiful surrounded by the dark blue sky, a million stars and the glowing moon, I wanted to kiss him.
"What?" he asked in his low, masculine voice, a lopsided smile appearing on his face.
"What?" I echoed, chuckling nervously. I was always nervous around him.
"You were staring at me."
I rolled my eyes. "No, I wasn't. There's nothing so interesting as to even glance at, so why would I stare?"
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," he teased through an evident smirk.
Seconds later, Ellie appeared rushing out of her front door and stumbling towards us in her high heels. We'd been waiting on her front porch until she was finished getting ready.
He took her into his arms, giving her a kiss on the lips right in front of me. I turned away. "Let's go, princess," he chirped, slinging an arm around her waist and leading her towards my car. They'd needed a ride and I had, regretfully, offered.
"Ready for prom, Kate?" she asked me, her pretty head turning to face me as I followed behind them with a feigned smile on my face. I should be used to pretending by now - how hard could it be to pretend for one last night, right?
"You bet, Ellie," I lied through gritted teeth.

Had this for ages and never published. Decided that it was its time, I guess. Short is for Short Story because I'm lazy. :)
