Poem: Talking To You

Talking To You

We write it down when we
Cannot speak about how we feel
Sit around listening
To music that cares
Wishing there was someone
Who'd really be there
When you're tired and alone
And the things you normally say
Become a part of a facade;
A mask we must wear
If we want people to care

Sitting around in silence
Watching people laugh
They ask, "Why?"
You respond as you should
An excuse ready and customized
For each and every time
They want to make sure you're fine
A remedy for guilt
But not for pain
Good for them
They needed to know
If their ignorance was justified
But as long as you're satisfied
There is no need to be concerned
For the quiet kid in the corner
As she watches the ceiling
Wondering and in her head screaming
As you continue your conversation
Forgetting the exchange
It's no longer a distraction
It will never bother you again

I like the way you smile
And the look in your eyes
Maybe I've seen it before
A couple of times
I've met so many people
And a mere handful of humans
But every time you look at me
It makes me feel
Like you mean it when you talk
About football and your cousin
How you can't sleep and can't study
How you lost your glasses yesterday
Turns out they were never misplaced
How you found them in their place
Where you leave them everyday
And when you speak to me
I'm convinced you have something to say
And what I hear is what you mean

Your thoughts are true
When they come out of you
So easily am I
Swept away in your eyes
And captured by a smile
Hearing you laugh
Tickles my heart
Knowing that you
Are happy in this moment
And what I see is not a lie
Like the things I hear
When I speak
And the reflection I see
When I look in the mirror

I hope one day
I can look into a gaze
Just like yours
And find in there more
Than just a smile
But understanding as well
And a connection beyond this world
Where I can feel safe
When I take off my mask
And speak without needing to be asked
