|| When I First Met Him ||
Jamie Earn was tall for her age, hadn't quite reached the peak of her beauty yet and had fair skin along with dark, almost-black hair - features quite unusual for someone of her nationality. She had been told she looked very different to most others, but she never really took it as a compliment so much as an insult. She hadn't understood that there were teenagers out there who would've done anything to have had her complexion, but still, she never seemed to feel the gravity of it.
She was standing in front of the school board at the front of the school. Her mother had reminded her repeatedly to check what sports she had, but she never really remembered - that was one of her biggest flaws, she had terrible memory. She only listened to what she wanted to listen to, but merely just heard things she had no interest in taking in. One of those things were her mother's requests and reminders.
She hadn't cared very much about school, either, so she rarely studied at home, yet she managed to get sixties and seventies for exams without even trying.
"Hey, Jamie." Her best friend, Mira, said while standing next to her. She was unwrapping a Twix bar and Jamie stared at it from the corner of her eye. She loved Twix, but wasn't easy to please when it came to general chocolate. Her mouth watered as Mira took a big bite out of one bar.
"What?" Mira asked, looking at Jamie with a raised eyebrow.
"Can I pleeeeeaaase have the other bar?" Jamie pleaded, turning to Mira and forgetting about the school board.
"Kay, fine." Mira handed her the other bar and they both ate for a minute while reading the school board. "Have you ever thought of joining BB?"
"BB?"
"Basketball, dum' ass." Mira mumbled and frowned at Jamie.
"Oh, yah. I totally knew that." Jamie joked, and thought to herself for a while. Basketball, huh? Never thought of playing that sport. Anyways, I'll probably suck and get in the way of practice. I can't even push a person, how am I supposed to dribble a ball and push people at the same time?
"You're pretty tall," Mira continued, "And anyways, they need new players for the under-13 team. You should go."
Are you crazy?! I'd probably get kicked off after the first practice. I don't even know anything about this sport! I have no idea how to play! How am I supposed to get into the school team?!
"I don't know..." Jamie said uncertainly, though she was sure she was not going to go.
"You know what," Mira said, "I'll come with you. We'll play together!"
Yah, great idea. Then we can both get kicked off and we can split the shame between us, "Okay, fine."
"According to this thing, we have our first practice on Friday," Mira read out loud while Jamie just stared into empty space, dreading what they had decided to do, "so that's tomorrow. I'll see ya there at five thirty, then."
Mira waved a hand and walked away. Jamie was still zoned out, though, running her tongue around her mouth to get the remaining taste of the Twix bar.
They'll all make fun of me, I'll get hit in the face with the ball, my glasses will break and mum will tell me off for playing with them on, I'll have to come to school with a broken nose, I'll forget the shampoo and attend school smelling like a dead rat after practice, the guys will make fun of me and I'll be named Rat Girl for the rest of my school-life, I'll fail Sports and studies, so then I'll become a nobody who can't do anything----
"Hi." Came a guy's voice, interrupting Jamie's thoughts. She whipped her head around to see someone she didn't know coming up to her with Blake Sullen walking beside him. Blake Sullen... how'd he get so hot over the Summer? And who's that dude with the zit on his cheek?
"Hey, Jamie." Blake said with a grin. He's smiling at me! He's actually happy to see me!"Can you help me out? This is Luke, he's new and he needs his timetable. Take him to the office for me, will ya? I can't be bothered."
He laughed and Jamie laughed, too; Blake's laugh made everyone laugh... or at least smile. Unless you're a lameass saddo who doesn't know what happiness feels like.
"Luke Rain, that's my full name, in case you need it." Luke said nervously, glancing back and forth between Jamie and Blake. Were they in a relationship?, he wondered, Shit, there goes my chances. Wait, am I crushing on the first girl I met?
Dang.
"Oh, okay." Jamie said, ignoring what Luke had said, her face slightly falling, but it went unnoticed.
"Thanks, Jamie, means a lot." Blake smiled at Jamie again and held up a hand, she slapped it and they had a small 'bro' moment. "See ya."
He walked away and Jamie stared at her hand, her face flushing. He touched my hand, he asked me for a high-five! Okay, maybe I got kind of friend-zoned, but hey, he thinks of me as his friend! And all this time I thought I was just some tree he hadn't noticed...
"Um, Jamie, right?" Luke said, uncomfortably looking at Jamie. She smirked at Luke and took his appearance in, eyeing him from top to bottom.
He was taller than her, which was unusual, but he wasn't lanky. He was actually pretty good-looking - he wasn't muscley like normal guys that did loads of sports, he was more... sharp-looking; less curvy and more pointy. He looked like he was more of a sprinter than a Team Player. The only problem was his zit, but Jamie figured that was only because of teenage puberty, and would go away soon with a little hope. His face was also pointed and sharp, but he had nice, pearly-white teeth that stood in a perfect row when he smiled - that was definitely eye-catching. His hair was dark like hers, and had a brown tint in the sunlight that came in from the outside. His eyes were dark brown, but she could see the brown properly, unlike most other Asians' eyes. They were sort of hidden behind his ugly, wire-rimmed glasses, though.
With a little work, maybe this guy could actually be attractive, Jamie thought to herself.
"Nah, it's Cinderella." She mocked and snickered at her joke. Wow, I'm being pretty mean. I've never been this mean to someone I just met, I feel bad now... but it's still pretty fun. Maybe I'll keep him as my punching bag till he gets fed up and stops talking to me.
"Hey! That's not nice." Luke frowned at her and followed as she started to walk towards a nearby staircase.
"I know, it's like, crazy sweet." Jamie mocked again and felt like she was enjoying this a lot.
"Whatever." Luke stayed quiet for a while and just stared at her from behind, She's really beautiful. She could be so much more appealing if she was nice. Maybe she's just mean only to me? Do I look too lame to be worth a nice word?, he thought to himself.
"So, what sports do you play?" Jamie asked from ahead when they reached the landing and started up the next staircase.
"Um," Luke hesitated, he hated sports. He didn't play a specific one, his parents made him go for all of them. The only club he didn't hate going to was Athletics, but he wasn't sure if it was a sport. Just go along with it, Luke, who cares? She doesn't like you, so you don't have anything to lose. "Athletics..."
He waited for her to burst out laughing or something, but she didn't, she just smirked and looked at him over her shoulder, "Athletics? Huh, haven't met a guy who'd admit that before. Usually it's Basketball, Football, Rugby... that kind of shit."
Luke didn't know whether it was a compliment, or an insult, so he just hummed in agreement and they finally reached the third floor. They walked in and stood in front of the desk. A miserable-looking lady with bushy black hair glanced at them over her computer.
"Timetable for Luke Rain, please." Jamie told her, skimming the contents of the desk. They both waited as the lady typed something up and the sound of the printer filled the room.
She handed Luke the timetable and turned her gaze back on the computer. They walked out of the office and Luke read through the timetable.
"So, what languages did you choose?" Jamie asked, simply out of boredom, since she was kind of lacking company without Mira.
"Um, French," Luke glared at the paper and then said, "and German."
"What's wrong? You look like you're trying to rip up the paper with your eyes." Jamie joked and laughed, peering at the timetable.
"Uh, nothing." Luke just stuffed the timetable back in his pocket. I hate German, why couldn't it be Extra English or Supportive Lit.? Anything other than German, maybe even Sinhalese or Tamil, he thought angrily.
"Just tell me," Jamie urged and nudged him with her shoulder, "I won't stop bothering you till you tell me."
"Well, I just don't like German," Luke confessed, looking down in shame, "at all."
"Which class are you in?" Jamie asked him.
"Humanites 1." He replied, they started to descend down the stairs.
"Same as me," Jamie smiled, "I'll help you. We can sit together, if you like."
If I have someone to help, I'll even have an excuse to talk to them in class. I guess he's not the best sort of company, but at least then, maybe I won't end up asleep on my desk. Man, that teacher is so boring!, Jamie thought and looked over at Luke.
"Okay." Luke tried to be cool, but he couldn't help but break into a huge grin when she wasn't looking.
Maybe she likes me, he thought.
