Severus Snape: Friend or Foe?

Author's Note: Okay, here's my essay that I wrote about Severus Snape and if he's a terrible human being or not. I wrote this in school for a free write so it's pretty official and like an essay I'd write for school. Hope you enjoy I guess.

In my opinion, Severus Snape is the worst professor to grace Hogwarts' halls, excluding Death Eaters (Barty Crouch Jr.), Voldemort's parasite thing (Quirinus Quirrell), and the pink toad (do I really have to say her name?). He bullies everyone who isn't a Slytherin, holds a grudge against Harry for something that happened before he was born, and called Lily Evans Potter a mudblood, his "worst memory."

Snape holds a reputation as the greasy Potions master that never gives Gryffindors a break. Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, although bullied somewhat, are nowhere near as insulted as Gryffindors. In the Sorcerer's Stone, Neville Longbottom accidentally messed up his potion, causing boils to sprout on his arms and legs. Instead of getting Neville to the hospital wing and being nice, Snape says, "'Idiot boy!' snarled Snape... 'You -- Potter -- why didn't you tell him not to add the quills? Thought he'd make you look good if he got it wrong, did you? That's another point you've lost for Gryffindor.'" Neville is only eleven years old and is immediately expected to know how to make the potion, never mind that the only thing Snape did was to say the instructions are on the board. In this example, he immediately turns on Harry and Ron and yells at them because of Neville's mistake. Harry and Ron were making their own potion, so they couldn't have corrected Neville. He never explains, in all of the seven books, why a potion would explode if it is stirred the wrong way. He calls almost every single person in his classes, barring Slytherins, dunderheads repeatedly. He also bullies Hermione mercilessly, especially in the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire. In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Snape says, "'That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger,' said Snape coolly. 'Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.'" Hermione didn't do anything wrong; any respectable teacher-Dolores Umbridge is not respectable under any circumstances-would have answered her question or responded to her comment. Minerva McGonagall in the movie and Professor Binns in the book do in the Chamber of Secrets, answering Hermione's question about Slytherin's Chamber even though it has absolutely nothing to do with Transfiguration or History of Magic. In the Goblet of Fire, Hermione is hexed by Draco Malfoy which makes her teeth grow rapidly and uncontrollably. Snape, instead of punishing Draco, punishes Harry and cruelly comments about her teeth, "Hermione's front teeth-already larger than average—were now growing at an alarming rate...Snape looked coldly at Hermione, then said, 'I see no difference.'" Hermione did nothing to result in being belittled by her professor in both instances.

Severus Snape was in love, but in my opinion more obsessed, with Lily Evans Potter. This obsession led to Snape's hatred for James Potter and vice versa. Even though James deflated his head and Lily fell in love with him, Snape still kept his hatred boiling hot, which erupted when Harry walked into his first Potions class. Harry wasn't even born yet, but Snape keeps belittling James. Harry has no recollection of his father at all and was sent to live with his abusive aunt and uncle. Snape knew about Petunia's deep distaste for anything magical, but did absolutely nothing. In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Snape cruelly insults Harry's father, saying, "'How extraordinarily like your father you are, Potter...He too was exceedingly arrogant. A small amount of talent on the Quidditch field made him think he was a cut above the rest of us too. Strutting around the place with his friends and admirers . . . The resemblance between you is uncanny.'" Harry has never "strutted" ever in the book series, has never shown any bit of arrogance, and has never, ever thought "he was a cut above the rest of us." Harry Potter never wanted his fame; all he ever wanted was his parents alive. Snape knew that Lily Evans would never have fallen in love with an "arrogant, bullying toerag," her words, but still tells these things to Harry on a regular basis and never tells anything good about his father. Snape also says that "'your father was a swine'" in Order of the Phoenix, even though he wasn't at all. James Potter was a loyal and courageous boy who didn't deserve the belittlement Snape did of him after he was already dead!!

Also, in the fifth book, we find out Snape's worst memory. In my opinion, this is a bunch of bogus. His worst memory isn't that he just called his best friend a terrible, racist slur that shouldn't be used ever. Instead, his worst memory is realizing that he did lose his best friend. He didn't even seem to care that he just basically swore at her, and this comes up later in the series, when Draco Malfoy calls Hermione a "mudblood" in front of Snape. Snape does absolutely nothing. When I read the Order of the Phoenix, sometimes I just want to jump into the book and punch Snape right in his overlong, hooked nose.

In conclusion, Severus Snape is a terrible person and should never have been ever considered to teach children. His favoritism, bullying, and pissy attitude all of the time are many flaws that aren't matched by his positive perks. I dislike Severus Snape with a passion, and this is a cause of reading all seven books and watching all eight movies.

And here's my Wattpad "essay" that's more of a list:

- Joining Voldemort

- Sacrificing James and Harry for Lily

- Calling Lily the m-word

- Telling everyone Remus is a werewolf when he did nothing to you

- Becoming friends with the racist Slytherins

- Bullying children

- Holding a grudge against somebody that looks like your dead obsession's dead husband because of his looks

- Telling Voldemort the prophecy

- Not telling Dumbledore who the fucking traitor is

- Being an ass to Sirius, who saw his best friend dead on the floor at twenty-fucking-one

- Ignoring baby Harry's cries in favor of cradling Lily's dead body

- Going through Sirius's stuff

- Going to the Shrieking Shack in his sixth year

- Not listening to Harry, Hermione, and Ron like ever

- Calling Hermione a know-it-all

- Telling her "I see no difference" when Draco hexed her

- Blatant favoritism of Slytherin

- Teaching by saying "instructions from the book"

Okay and so...

Please don't go off on me in the comments as I made this as a joke at first but it grew into a fully-fledged essay. I'm really sorry if I offended anyone in this; it's just my honest opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I'm not trying to demean anyone's in writing this.

Vive la France (and yes Enjolras, I'm writing this mostly for you so you can shout it and spread the cause TM <3 )
