Slut-Shaming

Chapter 2! This time the rant is sorta about fanfiction but also not. If you have written this cliché into your story, don't worry, it doesn't mean I have a lesser view of what you've written.

So everyone knows what slut-shaming is, right? The dictionary definition for it is this: the action or fact of stigmatizing a woman for engaging in behaviour judged to be promiscuous or sexually provocative. This means you could be slut-shamed for wearing anything even vaguely provocative, like a bikini. Now, I do not agree with either the idea behind the word slut, nor do I think this should be a plot device in a story.

To properly explain my problem with slut-shaming in fan-fic, I'm going to have to set the scene.

Some hot character with a girlfriend is in high school, and no-one knows. Suddenly, a girl with some defining qualities shows up. Here are some common ones: Crop top, short shorts, mini-skirts, long hair, often wearing heels. You know who I'm talking about. These girls are always swaying their hips and twirling hair around their fingers. Every single time, these girls are desperately trying to get the boys attention.

It really isn't the way these characters act, there are girls like that in every school, it's how they are described and spoken about. For example, in the people meet percabeth stories that I read, Percy Jackson himself often describes them as sluts, as does Annabeth Chase. This is just so wrong I can't deal with it. Do you really take one look at someone, see them wearing a short skirt and a crop-top, and decide that they have sex with everyone? I didn't think so.

In my personal experience, the girls trying to get a boy/girlfriend/significant other look nothing like this. They tend to wear brands all over, with tracksuit pants and $40 T-shirts. Also, is there a male equivalent to the word slut? No, there isn't.

Sorry, this has rambled on for way too long. I get really angry about things and I just write anything I want down. Love you all, Iris.
