Sander Side Short
I don't own the characters here, they are made by the talented Thomas Sanders.
Spoilers for the latest Sander Sides, to understand this short story, you may want to watch the linked video above. Much love ♡
Virgil appeared back in his room, still reeling from Deceit's entrance. His mind kept flashing back to the time when they had worked together.
He and Deceit went far back, working in tandem to throw Thomas off, push him as far as they could without hurting him. But Deceit wanted to take it further. He wanted to make Thomas pay for keeping them in the dark whilst the others got love, fame and recognition. Deceit was never one to stray away from the spotlight.
He sent Virgil to infiltrate, get information on how to slowly bring the other Sides down, to that place Deceit and Virgil had to call home.
Instead of being in the 'mind palace,' they endured the deepest pits of Thomas' mind. The shadows that would scream to be let out, freaks destined for freedom at some point. And Virgil had made it out with Deceit's help.
Even though Virgil hated Deceit, a part of him still wanted to thank the two-faced Side. Without him, Virgil would still be stuck in his own anxiety, making Thomas worse. Virgil had often pondered if he had stayed, would Thomas had gone mad like Deceit wanted?
He couldn't bare to think of that. Virgil decided to leave his room and check on Patton; after all, he was expected to be shaken up. Virgil appeared in his room. He was instantly horrified at the sight. Patton was in a corner, hands over his ears and rocking back and forth. He seemed so distressed. "Hey, are you alright there?" No response. Virgil dared to go closer.
"Patton?"
"I didn't mean to! I didn't want to hurt him. I never wanted to hurt him. I-"
"Whoa!" Virgil jumped at his friend's outburst. "It's OK. Take a deep breath in, and out." But Patton did not comply. He seemed to be completely out of it. Virgil called out to the empty room, "Guys? A little help here?"
At once the other sides appeared. Logan's brow furrowed and Roman ran a hand through his hair, taking deep breaths and his hands shook with every exhale. "Guess Deceit scared all of us." Virgil began to rub Patton's back, a grounding technique some of Thomas' friends would do whenever he had an attack. "What happened to Patton?" Logan's voice held a tone of accusation. "What do you think?" Virgil bit his tongue, he hadn't meant to sound so hostile. "Was it-" Logan's hand shot up to his mouth, Deceit was still pulling strings wherever he may be. Virgil understood and nodded. Without a word Roman left. This was unusual, Roman often wanted to help Patton for they worked together a lot, to try and make the right decisions. "Strange, doesn't Sir Sing-a-lot normally rise and fall?" Logan's furrowed brow deepened. "Oh god, is-" Logan nodded enthusiastically, hand still clasped to his mouth. Virgil disappeared from the room, leaving Logan to look after Patton.
He appeared once more, Roman stood in his room; a demonic cackle filling the room. Virgil tapped him on the shoulder. Roman spun round, one eye reptilian. He quickly covered it but Virgil had already guessed. "Let him go Deceit." The darker voice resonated behind Roman's, "I have a name Anxiety, don't you remember old friend?" Virgil winced at his position being named aloud. Roman fell to the floor leaving Deceit in his place. Roman's body fazed out of the room, leaving two old friends together. "What do you want?"
"Is that anyway to speak to me Anxiety?"
"I also have a name, Deceit."
Deceit chuckled, this was already going in his favour. "Don't you want to continue our old scheme?"
"No. I don't want to hurt him."
"But you know he doesn't care for you. None of them do." Virgil felt his chest tighten, his heart began to pound. "Yes they do, I know they do."
"Then why would they exclude you for so long? They clearly don't want you there." Deceit's voice was like poison, the lower tone twisting Virgil's metaphorical stomach. "They even let you face me alone. I wonder; did they assume you'd come crawling back to me? Do they know what you tried to do?"
"You're lying!" Virgil clasped a hand to his mouth, his voice deepening and becoming more frantic. The room seemed to go darker. "Is Anxiety kicking in?" Deceit laughed to himself.
Virgil tried to breathe to become calm once more, but Deceit was having none of it. He continued to goade Virgil, lie and twist the Side scenarios. "Even Logic, the most unlikeable, doesn't want you there." Virgil felt his his heart speed up dramatically, his breathing picking up once more. "They would never even miss you. You are nothing to them."
That was the last thing Virgil heard.
He fell to the floor, hands by his temples. Unable to move, he began to panic. He couldn't calm down, why couldn't he calm down? Deceit's malicious laugh echoed throughout the room, walls dark and with no escape. He couldn't leave, something - or someone - would not allow it. Deceit looked to Virgil, somewhat confused. "Virgil?" He didn't talk. Deceit placed a single gloved hand on his shoulder.
"Don't touch me!" The demonic voice sounded frightened. Deceit's eyes widened, this had never happened before, he has no clue what was happening. What was he to do? He disappeared from the room, leaving Virgil alone.
He popped up in Patton's room, where Logan and Roman tried to comfort the dad character. Logan's eyes filled with rage and hatred, before he noticed something. "Where is Virgil?" Deceit shot him a sympathetic glance. "I only wanted to mess with him but..." His voice trailed off. "Yes, but?"
"I don't know. He just... panicked." Roman looked at the two-faced Side. "What did you say?" Deceit looked sheepishly at the ground. He mumbled the phrases he had taunted Virgil with.
From the corner of the room, Patton looked up, tears in his eyes. "Please," he began. "Don't hurt him. Don't hurt my friend." Deceit felt hot guilt. What had he done?
He wanted to mess with them, yes. But never had he dreamed of truly hurting another Side again. He lost all members of his cause, he had nothing. And now it seemed, he was taking more from the others than previously known. "I need someone's help. He won't let me near him." A little white lie wouldn't hurt, after all; it was somewhat of the truth. Logan instantly left, Roman making way to follow. Patton tapped him on the shoulder, "Let me go. You keep check on this," he searched for a suitable insult but could not find one. "This disgrace of a Side."
The two rose from the floor to find Virgil sat in the middle, rocking back and forth. Patton felt a shiver down his back.
Logan strode over to the bundle on the floor. Before he could utter anything, Virgil spoke up. "Even Logic, the most unlikeable, doesn't want you there," he mocked. "So why are you here? To laugh at me, say how foolish I am? Spare your insults, I know them all."
"Virgil that simply isn't true. I care for you, like everyone else. We are here to support you. Virgil let out a low chuckle, it filled the room and oozed like slime. "Another lie. Just what I need. I am nothing to you."
"Virgil, we-"
"I am nothing! I am useless, pathetic, worthless." A sneer appeared on his face.
How could Logan and Patton help him?
