Deniable

"Help! Help me!" She yelled in pain while covering the wound on her neck. The blood from it was spilled all over the floor as she crawled slowly to get away from him. He stayed quiet with the face of a psycho holding a scalpel in his left hand while slowly following her to the front door.

"Please, don't kill me." She pleaded in tears while still enduring the excruciating pain from the small slice of the scalpel on her neck.

"What do you want from us?" She asked with a diminishing voice but she did not receive an answer when he immediately stab her chest multiple times up to her death.

"Miss Violy? Are you there?" called one of the police officers outside the house. He's been pressing the doorbell many times already when suddenly she opens the door.

"Oh, officer Jones, what's the problem?" She rubbed her eyes while yawning.

"Good afternoon miss, sorry to disturb you in your slumber but can you spare us a moment?" Officer Jones manages to give a faint smile to the lady.

"Sure."

"There was a homicide that happened in your neighborhood."

"Oh, that's horrible."

"Have you been here in your house last night?"

"Yes, I was in bed early because of a headache. What happened to them?"

"The parents were stabbed to death while the two kids were hanged inside their room," the officer explained eagerly while Miss Violy's face was sad. It was only a month since her neighbor bought the property. She couldn't even think of a reason why it happened to them for they were nice people. She only met them twice at the grocery store but she could see their gentleness and kindness.

"It's a third time that this incident happened in that house. I am worried because the murderer was still out there. What would I do if I become his next target?"

"We know that, that's why we want to investigate. And also, we found something interesting at the crime scene." One of the officers stated while giving her a sharp look.

"Sorry officer, I didn't follow."

"We would like to invite you to the station." Officer Jones said.

"But, why?" She asked, puzzled by their words.

"We will just ask some questions regarding the incident, it won't take long."

"Well, you can ask me right now. Why bother me to go to the station like I'm a suspect?

"You will know once we're there, so please bear with us," said he.

"Well, if that's what you want, let me call first my lawyer." She immediately dialed her lawyer's number while officer Jones leads her inside the patrol car. She couldn't decipher their motives for inviting her to the station but she followed their request. They drive past her neighbor's house and saw some policemen still out there. She had no idea that there was a murder that happened last night even though her house was only twenty meters away. She didn't even hear their scream for help or the slightest ruckus for she was in her bed early. Mostly, she would sleep past midnight due to insomnia.

"Can I ask?" Officer Jones looked at her in the front mirror as she spoke in the backseat.

"What is it?" His face was perplexed.

"Am I the prime suspect?" He looked away upon hearing her words. He, too, has no idea how she is a prime suspect in the crime. He knows her to be sweet and a devoted Christian. Her parents died from poison when she was only ten. They attempt to put some on her food too before they died but she survived. And now, she's twenty-nine years old, single, and working as a home-based freelance graphic designer. She only went outside her house on Sunday to attend a mass and on Saturday to buy groceries. She doesn't have any close friends for she always stays at her house to work on weekdays. She didn't go to clubs, parties, or any events not related to the church. She's quiet but sweet, that's what her churchmates say whenever he heard them gossiping. He was also a Christian so he sometimes saw her whenever he attend the mass. It puzzled him how her name was written on their hands.

"Yes, Miss Violy, I'm afraid you're our prime suspect for now." The officer sighed and put his sunglasses back while his other companion drives hurriedly. She just stayed silent and didn't react for she was confident she didn't do it.

"We're here," officer Jones said as they immediately stepped outside the patrol car and went directly inside the station. One of their subordinates approached them and told them to wait inside the interrogation room.

"You're lawyer is here, Miss." One of the officers said after an hour of waiting as he led the attorney inside the room. They greeted each other while officer Jones looked at the forensic result in his hand.

"Why does my client become a prime suspect?" Her lawyer asked instantly. Officer Jones handed out the photos of the victims.

"As you can see, Miss Violy's name was on their arms," he started.

"But there are many people in our town that have the same name as her." Her lawyer questioned as he looked at all the hands of the victims while she remained quiet, confused.

"We checked already the lists of all the girl that has the name 'Violy' and sorted out every possible intention that could link to the victims but we couldn't find any. As you can see, it's only a month since they transferred here." She listened very eagerly while tapping her hands gradually on her lap. Officer Jones continued to talk.

"Miss, how early have you gone to bed last night?"

"I remember, it was around 9:00 p.m. after taking my medicine."

"What kind of medicine have you been taking?"

"It's for an anti-depressant. I took one pill last night then I fell asleep." Officer Jones grabbed a small ziplock with a small medicine inside and put it on the table.

"Do you recognize this? Is this the same medicine you were taking?" She looked at it closely.

"Yes," she responded but her lawyer interrupted, "what's the connection of that to the crime?"

"It was at the crime scene," she was shocked in disbelief upon hearing the officer.

"Excuse me, officer, you couldn't accuse my client just because of that medicine that was on the scene. Maybe, they had the same medicine as her," exclaimed her lawyer.

"Yes, we could say that." Officer Jones nodded while grabbing another ziplock that has a scalpel on it.

"How about this scalpel, do you recognize it? It was a weapon used in the murder." Miss Violy leaned closer to look. She started trembling on her knees while her eyes were looking at the name that was engraved on it. Her lawyer was looking at her, baffled by her reaction. She suddenly burst into tears and started murmuring to herself, 'it's your fault, it's your fault!' while stomping her feet.

"I guess you do recognize it. It has your name on it with your surname," officer Jones said.

"Yes, that is one of my medical tools. Someone gave that to me as a gift because I like doing surgery on frogs when I went to medical school in college. But I think he took it from me to frame me of murder." Both officer Jones and her attorney were confused by her words.

"Who is the person you are referring to?" Officer Jones asked but she bow down and became anxious while mumbling again some inaudible words. I hate you, I hate you. I'm not a bad person but you are.

"Are you okay Miss?" He asked. Miss Violy looked up and said something that made them intrigued.

"My brother, Elias."

"But you have no siblings." Skeptical, he smirked.

"I do have, his name is Elias and he's--he's a bad guy. I told him to stop doing bad things for me but he didn't listen to me and got angry with me." She talked fast and her face became nervous. She didn't want to tell anyone about Elias because she will be scolded for it. "Please officer, don't tell my brother that I told you about him because he's going to get mad at me," she added but officer Jones sighed in disbelief. While looking at her, he remembered the previous murder case that happened in that same house. It has the same methods of killing but the mark that was written on the victim's arms was 'Elias'.

"Officer, please give me a minute with my client. She's not in her right mind, for now, maybe it's because of nervousness." Her lawyer begged and the officer nodded as he went outside the interrogation room.

"What do you think you're doing? Whose Elias? Tell me everything so that I can help you." Her lawyer asked.

"I told you, he's my brother."

"But you're the only child of your parents, how come you have a brother?" He asked but she didn't answer back.

"Okay, okay. Let's say you have a brother, where is he now? I never see him even once."

"He's away. He just comes into the house and goes whenever he wants. My doctor will tell you that I'm telling the truth. I'm not a murderer." She burst into tears while clasping her arms.

"I'll call your doctor, don't worry too much." He immediately dialed her doctor's number and after an hour of waiting, Dr. Ronald arrived inside the room. Officer Jones started his interrogation again.

"Dr. Ronald, Miss Violy here said that you know about her brother, Elias." The doctor made a long pause, then whispered something at officer Jones.

"Can we let her stay outside first? I have something important to tell you, officer." The doctor asked with a serious face and officer Jones nodded in approval while another officer leads miss Violy outside the room.

"What is it, doctor?"

"She has DID or Dissociative identity disorder," he said. Officer Jones lifts his eyebrows. "It's a mental health condition wherein she has multiple, distinct personalities. And, about his brother Elias, the one she said who committed murder, he's real but it is her second identity."

"How long does she have this condition?" Officer Jones asked, still uncertain.

"Since her parents died and left her alone. But, her illness will only occur when she is in her deep sleep having a nightmare from her past or when she is depressed. As far as I know, I gave her medicine so that she could avoid it." Her doctor explains.

"But, it didn't help because there was a murder that happened last night, and she is the suspect. Even though her fingerprints weren't found on the crime scene, some evidence that we have  gathered proves that she's the main suspect." Officer Jones asserted. He didn't know her condition until now, but it doesn't mean she can't be held responsible for the crime.

"Is it possible to wake her other self tonight, when she sleeps?" He asked the doctor.

"I don't know, it depends upon her. But, let's not give her medicine for depression. We can give her a sleeping pill rather and see if he will come out. Also, we just have to provoke her or tell her about her past." The doctor explained.

"You mean, about her parent's suicide?" The lawyer asked curiously.

"Yes, yes."

"Well, let's try. We could let her stay in a closed facility at the hospital near the station for a time being and observe her." Officer Jones said as her lawyer and doctor nodded. After an hour of transfer, the doctor talk to her and gave her a sleeping pill. She cried so hard upon hearing again the story from her past and after a minute of sobbing, she went asleep. They immediately cuffed her hands and feet to avoid any problems that will occur once her other self was awakened. There was a CCTV installed inside the room to monitor her while officer Jones are ready for interrogation but they waited hours and failed.

"Maybe, she's just faking her illness." One of the police stated but the doctor stopped him. "Shhh, she's awake."

She leaned forward to sit while looking at her cuffed hand, puzzled.

"What is this, where am I?" She yelled but this time, she mimicked a voice of a man. Officer Jones knows that the man inside her was awakened. They hurriedly went inside the room while the doctor followed.

"Elias!" Officer Jones blurted while pointing a 45-caliber gun at him.

"Oh, how do you know my name? Ah, my sister told you about me. F*ck her!" he shouted.

"I just wanted to talk to you so please remain seated on the bed."

"Okay, okay. What is it?" Officer Jones lowered his gun as well as the two officers. He slowly grabs a chair and sits next to him.

"You are at the hospital. We put you here for observation." He said while the doctor entered the room.

"Dr. Ronald, long time no see." Elias welcomed him in a sarcastic voice.

"Elias, how are you?" Asked the doctor but he just laughed hysterically.

"What kind of a question is that? Can't you see I was handcuffed? Of course, I don't feel good," said he as he gave him a grimaced face. "So officer, ask me everything you want to know, I hate being interrogated for so long." He continued while looking seriously at Officer Jones.

"A murder happened last night at 11:00 and we saw Miss Violy's name written on their hands. We also saw the weapon used in the murder with her full name on it but she said that she's not the criminal, what can you say about that?" Officer Jones remained calm but Elias just smile at him. He was like a psychopath and with rage eyes, he blurted, "I did it because she can't do it. I tried to convince her to execute them but she just nagged at me and said that it was unholy. I got angry at her for being a coward." He confessed without remorse. "I used her scalpel and wrote her name as a gift to her. It could have been my signature but I chose hers. It was to act as if she killed them but I thought she would be glad."

"So, you admit to being responsible for the crime. How about the murder case of Robinson's and Smith's family, they were murdered at the same house four years ago consecutively. Do you know about it?"

"How can I not, I killed them because they were a nice family, just like our new neighbor. My sister was disgusted to see a lovely family living together, I have read her diary." Elias said and this time his face was sad. "Our parents tried to poison us when we were young, we've been deprived to live a normal and happy life. I always felt that my sister cried whenever she saw a completely happy family that's why I made the move." Elias said with tears then instantly wiped them with his hands but begins to smile and looked at officer Jones. "You see, I am a good brother," he said.

"But you have killed many people and that is not an act of a good man." Officer Jones explained but Elias begins to shout with fury.

"You have no right to tell me that! You're not my father, you son of a b**ch!"

"Calm down, calm down," he said but Elias was adamant while throwing cursed phrases. Other officers approached him to calm him down but he was strong enough, then after a long fight, he suddenly pass out. The doctor approached him and check his pulse.

"He's okay, he's just sleeping but hopefully, it will be Miss Violy when he's awake. Officer Jones nodded as other officers help Elias to lie down on the bed.
