The JK&KJ story
Some friends (Krayzeetree, Eevelutionbrainiak, and other people not on wattpad) and I are making a magazine and I was in charge of writing the story for October. Here it is:
"Dumb, useless brain!" Jaka Key said banging her head on the table with every word.
Jaka sat at a table in her living room trying to figure out what to write for her and her friends' magazine the Newsies.
Jaka had light brown hair, pale skin tone, cerulean eyes, and was fourteen years old. At that moment she wore her Halloween costume; Hufflepuff Hogwarts robes.
Her younger brother Jakob sat on the other side of the table scrolling through his phone. Jakob had black hair, dark brown eyes, and tanned skin tone. He wore his Halloween costume as well; some ripped up and "bloody" clothes for his Zombie clothes. Jakob had been adopted from Singapore when he was nine and a half which left him with a slight Asian accent. He was hyper and kept Jaka and her parents on their toes.
On Jaka's right her friend Kayla Jewell sat doodling in her sketchbook. Kayla had wavy brown hair and a slight tint of red to it, hazel eyes, slim, and a slightly tan complexion. She was usually calm but liked to have fun. She wasn't wearing a Halloween costume, instead, she wore a blue t-shirt and some jeans.
And Kayla's identical twin lay "passed out" on the couch a few feet away. Keira had eaten to much candy earlier and had been singing and dancing around the room reenacting a couple Broadways to the best of her abilities and altogether had not been helping with writing the story. She was serious sometimes when she needed to be but she would not let one moment of joy and laughter escape her. She also wore a Halloween costume; she was Crutchie from one of her favorite Broadways: Newsies. Both she and her twin had been adopted from Britain when they were eight and still had accents.
The twins were also fourteen.
Jakob looked up from his phone.
"Maybe we should take a break. We've been working on this for two hours."
"But we only have half a sentence written!" Jaka said, pulling the computer in front of her.
Kayla leaned over to look at the screen.
"Half a sentence?" she said. "That's more then we had the last time I checked. What have you got?"
" 'This is the story of...' " Jaka quoted, rubbing her face.
"Is there any Reese's peanut butter cups left in the candy bowl?" Keira asked, slowly rising from the couch and rubbing her aching head.
"Nope," Jakob said, sneaking the last one into his pocket and tossing her a fun-sized Hershey.
Keira unwrapped it, stood up, grabbed her crutch (for her costume) and putting it under her arm walked over to the computer and peered at the few words on the computer screen.
"You guys haven't gotten very far," she remarked.
"You haven't exactly helped," Kayla pointed out.
Keira shrugged and sucked on the chocolate in her hand.
"What if we write about some kids trying to survive a zombie apocalypse?" Kayla suggested.
"We need to write a short story. That would go on for forever." Jaka pointed out.
" 'And ever. And ever and ever.' " Keira started to sing 'You'll be Back' from the Broadway Alexander Hamilton that the character King George had sung because Jaka had reminded her of it with the word 'forever'. She inhaled and began to sing more from the song. " 'You'll be back! Time will tell! You'll remember that I served you well!' "
"Shhh!" Kayla said, trying to cover Keira's mouth.
Keira moved away and continued to sing.
"We could write about a skeleton. It would be the real backbone of our magazine." Jakob said with a smirk.
Keira paused singing her song, using her crutch as a cane, and doing the kick line to say: "Ah! The puns!".
Jaka put her head on the table and moaned.
"What would we write about the skeleton?" Kayla asked, completely ignoring the pun.
"I don't know," Jakob shrugged, "But I bet it will take a skeleton of writing!"
"Stop the puns, Jakob!" Jaka groaned.
Jakob looked offended. "Gee, sis, that comment really cut me to the bone."
Kayla politely laughed at the joke.
"Guys, we can't mess around! We have to- what is she doing?!" Jaka asked looking at Keira.
Keira was now strutting around the room, still using her crutch as a cane, singing.
Kayla glanced over at her weird sister. "She's singing 'Right Hand Man' from Hamilton."
"Is that a song about a right-handed dude?" Jakob asked, throwing out another pun.
No one answered him, not wanting to encourage any more puns.
Keira finished her song and walked over to the table where everyone sat she picked up an old newspaper that lay on the table, and then attempting to do splits in the air as she ran across the room, began to sing 'Carrying the Banner' from Newsies.
The three of them watched her silently until she realized that her grand performance was being observed and stopped and blushed.
"Um, remember when we found this newspaper?" she asked, embarrassed.
They all nodded and then Kayla had an idea.
"What if we write about that?!"
They all exclaimed at the idea and Jaka began to type on her computer.
*********
It was a cool October afternoon around five-thirty. It was also Halloween.
Jaka was helping her new little brother find one of his shoes for his Halloween costume. He was going to be an astronaut.
Jaka was in a panda onesie and had her hair up in two ponytails.
"Where did you see it last?" Jaka asked Jakob.
Jakob shrugged.
"If I could tell you that I could tell you where it is," he said in his thick Asian accent.
Jaka glanced up at the clock in panic. "We need to meet Kayla and Keira in a few minutes!"
"Oh, wait." Jakob bounded to his room. In a few moments, he bounded back out with both boots on.
"Where did you find it?" Jaka asked but then looked at the clock again. "Oh no! We're late!"
Their mom met them at the door and handed them each a trick-or-treating bag.
"Do you have both of your jackets in your backpack, Jaka?"
"Yep!"
"Do you have the kid's phone in case of emergency?"
"Yep!"
"Avoid shady characters. And don't forget, this is Jakobs first time trick-or-treating in America so keep a careful watch. Now run! The Jewell twins are very particular about time."
"Yep!"
She grabbed Jakob's hand and they went out the door and bounded the sidewalk towards the Jewells' home. They only lived a street away so it allowed them to hang out a lot
Meanwhile, at the Jewells' house, Kayla and Keira were walking out the door. Kayla was dressed as Evie from Descendents. Keira, however, had no money, as usual, to get a fancy Halloween costume so she had quickly decked black clothes, and a hairband with cat ears painted her nails black and quickly swiped some makeup cat whiskers and a nose on.
"We're late!" Kayla called over her shoulder as she dashed down the sidewalk.
"I know!" Keira called back, picking up her and Kayla's forgotten trick-or-treat bag from the table near the door and then chasing after her.
"There they are!" Kayla said, pointing at a little astronaut and a girl in a panda onesie.
"Hi, guys!" Jaka called to her friends.
"Hi!" Keira and Kayla said in unison.
Jakob said something in his really thick Asian accent which the twins didn't understand but Jaka interpreted as: "Let's go!"
They started on the first street over and in an hour they had a sufficient amount of candy.
Keira and Jakob had had some candy so they were bouncing everywhere and wouldn't stop. Jaka was carrying both her and Jakob's candy bags because it had gotten heavy but would give it to him when they would ring a doorbell.
"Let's take a break at that bench up there," Kayla suggested.
They did. Jaka and Kayla sat on the bench while Keira collapsed on the grass behind the bench and Jakob played in the grass a few feet away, playing with a small toy he had received at one of the houses.
"Keira, are you still alive?" Kayla asked, turning around in her bench to look at her insane twin.
"Nope," came the reply.
"Oh, no. Well, I'm going to miss you."
"And I'll miss you."
Jaka had closed her eyes but then opened them to check on Jakob. She stood up with a start.
"Where's Jakob?!" She exclaimed.
The twins jumped to their feet and looked at the spot Jakob had been playing at just a few seconds before.
"There!" Keira pointed at an old abandoned house at the end of the street.
Jakob was walking up the steps. He knocked on the door and it swung open.
"Jakob!" Jaka called.
Jakob turned around and waved then turned back around and entered the house.
"Jakob, stop!" Jaka yelled and ran towards the house as Kayla followed and then Keira after she grabbed everyone's forgotten candy bags. All of them passed an upright sign bearing the inscription 'The House on Whitmer Street'
In a few moments, they were on the house's front steps.
Jaka stopped. "Jakob, come out!" she called into the darkness.
No answer.
"Follow me," Keira said as she pulled a flashlight out of her pocket and entered the house.
"Isn't this breaking and entering?" Kayla whispered.
"We haven't broken anything," Keira whispered back.
"BOO!"
The girls shrieked and Keira's flashlight flew out her hand and smacked the wall, going right through it.
"Jakob! Don't do that!" Jaka yelled at her mischevious little brother.
"Sorry," he smirked, "Your guy's expressions were priceless!"
"Oh, great. So much for not breaking anything," Kayla said, peering into the hole in the wall. "The flashlight has fallen down in. There's no way we're going to get it out unless we break the wall more."
"Hey, what's that?"
Jakob walked over to the wall and pulled out a piece of paper.
They all crowded around him to look at it.
It was an old newspaper, crinkled and yellowed with age.
" 'The Newsie'," Keira read. "Hey, Newsies is the name of that one Broadway musical."
"You're right," Kayla said. "Here, may I see it?"
"Sure."
Kayl examined it. "It's from 1905."
"Wow," everyone gasped.
"How'd it get in the wall?" Jaka asked.
"I've heard that's what they use to use for installation. So if they'res a crack in the wall they would stuff it with newspaper," Keira said. "Oh, hey! 1905 is six years after the Newsies strike was settled. Y'know the one in the Broadway?"
"No." Kayla put her hand on Keira's face. "No more."
"Boy, finding this newspaper is real news, aye, Jaka?" Jakob joked.
She rolled her eyes.
Kayla opened the newspaper.
"Oh, look. There's an article about the house we're in."
"Oooh! What does it say?" Keira asked, taking it from her hands.
"I don't know but it's got to be old news," Jakob said, throwing out another pun.
"Marni Dupont, age 10, was found missing," Keira read, "The only clue the police were able to find was a question mark on the wall in black crayon, made in an obvious hurry. The police guessed this just meant she didn't know who kidnapped her. Mari is an heir to a considerable amount of money, left to her by her grandma Katarina Stavros, that she would inherit the day she turned eighteen. Looking further into the young lady's life they found three possible suspects:
Her aunt Brianna Seaver had come to visit Mari and her parents that weekend. Seaver admitted that she knew that if something happened to Mari she was on the list for being next to inherit. Seaver claims she was at the grocery at the time of the kidnapping.
Then there was Mari's cousin 29-year-old Mark Leigh who lives near Mari Dupont and her family. He was also on the list for the next to inherit and knew it. He claimed he was in the park at the time.
There was also Ethan and Cathleen Bronson, Mari's neighbors. They were very close to Katrina Stavros and had been told they were also on the list of the next to inherit.
None of them knew what order they came on the inheritance list but what matters is they did know. Who kidnapped Mari Dupont?
Well, after some deep considering-." Keira stopped and squinted at the paper.
" 'After some deep considering' what?" Jaka asked. "What happened?"
"I don't know. I can't really read anymore. It's too dark and it's kinda smudged," Keira answered.
"Well, let's go outside and try to read it," Kayla suggested.
"What about the wall?" Keira asked nervously.
"My mom knows the owner, I'll have her call them," Jaka said, "They won't mind if we borrow the newspaper, they're really nice."
They all walked outside but it was now later so it was still too dark to read it. They trick-or-treated at a few more houses before heading to Jaka's and Jakob's house.
After sitting around the table with a cup of hot apple cider and a homemade doughnut each they opened the newspaper to continue the article.
Keira opened it and found the article she began to read "After some deep considering over the seeming pointless clue Mari left they figured out what it meant and that-," Keira stopped and her eyes grew wide. "Oh, wow!" she exclaimed.
"What?! Who did it?!" Her friends asked.
"-And that Mark Leigh was responsible!" Keira continued.
"What?! How did they come up with him?" Jakob asked.
"Question mark. Question Mark!" Kayla put together.
"She put a question mark meaning-," Jaka started.
"-Meaning question Mark!"
"That's so smart!" Keira exclaimed.
"Wow." They all paused and looked around at each other.
Jakob stood up and walked over to where Keira sat and pulled the newspaper out of her hands. He turned the page.
"Oh, hey. There's an article about the pilgrims in here."
Keira stood up and looked over his shoulder.
Kayla and Jaka followed the action.
Jakob read the title. "Sometimes Being Thankful Enough isn't Enough."
"Sounds interesting," Jaka commented.
"I'm thankful for that news, Jaka."
"JAKOB! NO MORE PUNS!"
